Legendary Bards is the latest volume in our new series of player-focused supplements, this time focusing on the performing dilettante: the bard. The bard blends magic, martial prowess, and a mastery of skills to allow the character to support their party in a variety of ways both in and out of combat. One thing I cannot understand well is how the Bardic Performance works exactly here because they seem to require Perform Skill Checks but the DCs aren't listed anywhere, like with Shattering Crescendo. It says I can send a sonic burst to an enemy but it doesn't says if I have to make a Touch Attack Roll, the creature receives any Saving Throw, the damage just goes without save automatically... is not very specific, I'm afraid.

Bardic Performances for LBard work exactly the same as for regular Bard, they don't require checks, but require you to be using a type of performance you are proficient with.

Shattering Crescendo doesn't list either because it doesn't require either; it automatically deals damage to the target if used. The damage is low (1d4+level) and requires an expenditure of a daily resource.

I had a ton of fun writing this book, and am glad to finally see it released!

What makes a legendary bard "legendary" compared to a regular bard?

Well, that is simple: Versatility!

Unlike the core bard, the legendary bard is not locked into a set list of performances. Bardic performances are now a wide array of choices for you to decide from to better shape your character. Want to be a bard that focuses on manipulating the elements? You can do that. Twist the minds of your foes? Yup! Perhaps, even perform the role of healer? By golly, you can do that too.

What about Inspire Courage, isn't it still basically mandatory because it's one of the strongest buffs in the game?
Well, good news bard-fans: Inspirations are no longer performances! They are their own independent class feature, forever...See more divorced from bardic performances rounds. You can now simply have a single Bardic Inspiration active at a time, and grant its benefits to your party whenever you please.

In an effort to keep the core bard's versatility through its massive list of archetypes, I focused a lot of my effort on giving the legendary bard the widest range of Alternate Class Features I could, miniature archetypes that swap out only a single class feature at a time. Through these, especially in combination with the legendary bard's larger archetypes, you can create the legendary bard you want to play. Be a nature-focused bard, tame a legendary drake companion, release your inner scoundrel, hone your blade, or dabble in both Spheres of Might and Power.

On top of those are the archetypes!
The Firearm Stacatto blends firearms and music in a rhythm that will spark fear in the hearts of your foes.
The Improv Artist specializes in both the spheres of Might and Power, focusing their study towards the goal of being as versatile as possible, utilizing both Flex and Adaptable talents to face any challenge.
The Scholar of Legend gives up some of their martial prowess for a greater focus on casting: A ninth-level casting bard is now available to you.
The Warrior Poet is the other side of that coin, giving up their magics to further empower their might, increasing their Hit Dice and Base Attack Bonus, as well as giving them even more versatility in combat using martial means.
The Maestro gives up magic to focus on Performances. Double the performances rounds each day, and double the performances known. Truly the master performer.

Last but not least is this books Prestige Class: The Wandering Minstrel. These plucky adventurers have learned to use bardic performances despite not being a bard themselves, and progress some of the abilities of their aligned class while they do so. In the hands of a legendary bard, this prestige class can be used to even further specialize in their performances at the cost of their other talents.
