I'm not sure I understand how a comic book style slugfest is supposed to happen with these rules. Does the player just say "I would like to defeat my enemy" and the GM just decides how many "heads" results that requires?

The GM would be saying what the enemy is doing, the player would then interrupt to make a difference and stop that from happening, stating which of their Powers they are using. Depending on how tough the enemy is, and other variables, the GM sets the target as 1 to 3 heads required. Without other factors, such as using an Association to ignore a tail and toss it again, you've got a 50% chance to succeed against a target of 1, 25% against a target of 2 and only a 12.5% chance against a target of 3.

To represent tougher villains, think about how they are protected by minions, gadgets and evil plans that interfere with the PCs: there might be three or four things going on at once when a scene is illustrated, so if the PCs go straight for knocking out the villain, they are leaving the minions to carry out the plan unhindered. Also, a villain might just be trying to make their get away at any point, so if that is not successfully stopped, they live to fight another day.

Generally, don't forget...See more

Thanks for the quick reply! So, the idea is to break a conflict down into a series of tasks that the heroes want to oppose, not just "Doctor Damnation shoots at you with his blaster" and "Okay I dodge the blast." But, in that scenario, if the player says, "I will reflect the blast back at Doctor D and knock him out cold", the GM sets a 3 heads target, and the player makes that target, then the bad guy is knocked out in that one round? I guess it's a just a high level of buy-in on the player's part to not add in "I knock out the bad guy" to the end of their responses? I think I see what style of play you're trying to encourage, but I'm wondering how to handle those "I knock out the bad guy" folks :)

No problem, always happy to answer questions about my games! I hope you get a chance to play it soon.

On the subject of players wanting to knock out the villain, what about using one of the other playbooks to represent them? That way, they've got four Powers of their own they can use, so maybe each player's action can only knock out a Power, until the villain has none left, then the PCs can finally take 'em down? The game isn't really designed to cope with blow-by-blow fights, but this little hack to the rules should satisfy players who want that type of epic confrontation with the ultimate big bad!

You know, one of your PDFs even mentions that option, and I didn't make the connection at all! That is a great solution to the so-called "problem" I was having. The real bad guys get character sheets of their own. I can't believe I was being that dense :) Thanks!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
