Solo Adventures compatible with Stars Without Number

Too Many Games

Too many games get bought and never played. With these rules, you will be able to play Stars Without Number without a GM. Grab the rulebook off the shelf. Make yourself a character and start playing. This book is an interactive set of solo rules that guide your improvisation and acts as a GM for your adventures. In place of the common lists of words, this booklet uses visual icons to inspire you.

Unleash your adventurous spirit and explore stars without number.

Solo is a perfect way to learn a new game, test your first adventures and going beyond just making characters when you are first getting to know the rules.

Stars Without Number Solo Adventures

Stars Without Number [SWN] is one of the most popular OSR role-playing games ever released. While it is very similar to a lot of dungeons & dragons derived games it diverges when it comes to the skill system. Outside of combat, SWN is mostly driven by 2d6 rather than the ever-present d20 so common in other OSR games. If you have never solo played an RPG before I will ease you into that as it is a different experience from any other form of role-playing.

You Need This Book

Because all role-playing is improvisation. If you are a GM and your players go off course, the improv tool in this book will help you create exciting adventures on the fly.

How This Book is Organised

All the rules in this book are at the front. You then get three useful record-keeping pages which you may print multiple copies of for your own use. Finally, there are ten pages of ‘game icons’. These you may also print off if you prefer to have them on paper.

DriveThruRPG does not support community copies. If you cannot afford this supplement, the entire book is in the Full-size preview. Please use that with my blessing.

I have skim read the preview file and feel this is a nice introduction to the hobby of solo RPGs. A really good element is the image clocks and for this reason your book will stick in my memory.

I feel it could do with something to engage all of the wonderful generators in the Stars without Numbers system. One of the difficulties in Solo adventures is that you don't want to know more information that you should in advance. SWN comes with lots of generators for adventure seeds, NPC, factions, places, etc. which are wonderful for a GM but don't work so well for solo.

I think the addition of some guide on how to uncover information gradually using the tables built into the SWN rules would add to the experience. My belief is uncovering the hidden motivations of the NPCs, and factions would be of immense help with immersing the player in the adventure.

Is it possible to apply this system to other 2d6 SciFi systems like Traveller or The Cepheus Engine?

It certainly is. Traveller was the second RPG I ever played back in the early 80s.
There is a better option for Traveller/Cepheus system. Take a look at this book before you decide. https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/335525/Players-Guide-to-Solo-Roleplay

No problem at all. It was a good jumping off point.

I have another question in terms of solo play: would it be better to play a small crew (2 or 3 characters) or is one character enough to play through a game?

My personal preference is for one character. When I do meet up with NPCs it tends to be for a single adventure or part of an adventure. When I do that, I create full character sheets for them but control them through yes-no questions. What is the most logical thing for each NPC to do in this situation? Then roll yes-no. You can temper the odds with their relationship to you. If you are constantly at odds with an NPC for being too bloodthirsty or trigger-happy, they will be less likely to follow an order to cease firing.
You can extend the same idea to a permanent crew or gang.

How compatible is this with other Sine Nomine games like Godbound or Worlds Without Number?

I don't own Godbound, and although I have Worlds Without Number I haven't read it yet or played it.
The basic mechanics will almost certainly work, my only concern is that the icons I chose for the icon wheels are very much sci-fi influenced.
I suggest that you download the full size preview and have a go. If it works then great, if it doesn't, let me know and I will create something specific for those games.

Hi,
Printing is not disabled in any way, so you should be able to print.
I have just uploaded a fresh copy of the PDF. It is named October 2020. Can you try downloading that newer file? If that works the problem was at DTRPG's end.
If it doesn't work, let me know and I will find a way to get a working file to you.

Constructive criticism: the HUD graphic you've got on every page as a watermark makes the text quite hard to read at times and where you have it behind the oracle clock graphics it looks really messy. Please consider dropping the opacity of the HUD way down, and/or producing a "print friendly" plain text version.

Otherwise that's a pretty solid solitaire engine you've put together. Really like the clock concept as a tracker, as well as your nifty implementation of the icons in a clock format as an oracle. Good explanation of how solo play works too.

I have made the change you suggested but the watermark is actually on a separate layer in the PDF so you can turn it off for easier printing.
Thanks for the suggestion.

Hi Peter. Oh that's so, so much better, looks great and is a lot easier to read. And thanks for pointing out the layers - removing the background layer removes the HUD watermark and the coloured margins, turning it into a print-friendly version.

(For anyone else buying this, the updated version to download at the time of writing is the PDF entitled "Solo_Adventures_for_SWN.pdf)

Thanks for taking the comments on board and best of luck with the product.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
