The Ultimate Old-School Essentials Referee's Screen!

This 4-panel screen provides a quick reference to the most common rules and procedures needed to run Old-School Essentials Classic Fantasy or Advanced Fantasy games:

  • Master attack matrix.
  • Saving throw tables for monsters and all Classic Fantasy character classes (cleric, dwarf, elf, fighter, halfling, magic-user, thief).
  • Combat rules summary.
  • Procedures for encounters, dungeon adventures, and wilderness adventures.
  • Summary of options available during downtime between adventures.
  • Summary of character class abilities, including tables for spell progression, thief skills, and turning the undead.
  • Complete equipment lists, including weapon combat stats, mounts, and land vehicles.
  • Master movement rate table, listing base, encounter, and overland movement rates.
  • Great for all Basic/Expert games!

The front of the screen is graced by a fantastic, four-panel dungeon diorama painting by the legendary Peter Mullen! The PDF includes high-resolution artwork for home printing.

The panels are in US Letter format (8.5" x 11"), for use in the universal GM screen available from DriveThruRPG (see info below).

 Game Master Screens (Landscape)

Many publishers offer GM Screen Inserts which are professionally printed cardstock pages designed to slide into the pockets of our deluxe GM Screens. When you purchase the GM Screen Inserts, you have the option to purchase the screen itself with the inserts, and when you do the inserts are free.

Our deluxe, black vinyl screens are:

Thick and durable - It's the last GM Screen you'll ever need to buy.

Large - Four panels wide and each panel has clear pockets on both sides to hold a total of 8 inserted pages

Customizable and Reusable - As you change campaigns or game systems, you need only remove and replace the inserts

It's something we may do at some point, but it's not planned for the near future. (It would require a complete redesign of how all the text and tables are laid out, so unfortunately isn't a trivial task.)

There isn't a v1.2 file for the screen inserts -- v1.1 is the latest file. The comment below about v1.2 was referring to the PDF that accompanies the deluxe referee's screen that we sell elsewhere.

Just received notice about a 1.2 update to the screen. Where may I find a list of changes compared to my physical version of the screen?

Not currently, though it's something we might consider in the future. Everything included on these insert panels works with Old-School Essentials Classic or Advanced. It might be possible to add an extra insert panel with details on the additional Advanced classes though.

Any plans to make/update a screen to include the new “Advanced Fantasy Player and Referee Tomes”?

The current screen is good but to have all the new classes, races, abilities, tables, equipment, etc. would be fantastic!

Thanks!

Hi Keith, we don't have any plans for an Advanced Fantasy screen. The reason is that the majority of the screen is taken up with core game rules which apply equally to OSE Classic or Advanced Fantasy. In order to fit on tables for the Advanced Fantasy classes, we'd have to remove core game rules, which isn't a worthwhile trade-off.

I understand and it is a great screen. It is a shame though, because with all the great new race/class additions, it just feels incomplete now. Everyone in my group is using the new classes and the info isn’t there so it requires a separate lookup.

Not the end of the world, but the OCD in me wants all the info in one spot and doesn’t want to leave any man (class) behind, lol.

I guess I can just make an additional sheet and append it to the screen.

Anyway, thanks for listening.

Also, The new OSE books are a work of art, you did an amazing job!

Glad you're enjoying the game!

We do sell a reference booklet that includes more tables/info than can fit on the referee's screen, including tables for all of the Advanced Fantasy classes. That might be of interest if you want more quick reference tables at your fingertips when running games.

Overall, a pretty good screen that captures all the tables, and rules, save one. The Ascending Armor conversion is not listed on this screen. I am not sure why it was left out, when it was included in the book multiple times, but this will make the screen harder to use when running any post TSR modules. Overall, great screen that captures all the classic rules.

Thanks for the feedback. I see what you mean about the DAC to AAC conversion. I guess that would be useful for groups who use AAC to run old adventures or groups using DAC to run new adventures.

I've had a look, but the screen is already so full of tables that there's unfortunately not really any free space available to add anything else.

The Armour section on the Equipment panel does give the AC conversion for unarmoured, leather, chainmail, and plate mail, but of course that doesn't cover the entire range of AC. There's not actually a direct conversion table that covers the complete AC range in the rule books either, which is why it didn't occur to me to add one to the screen.

Glad you're enjoying the screen anyway!

I noticed that the screen on the Necrotic Gnome site is 3 panel, while this one is 4. What page is the extra one?

Necrotic G May 01, 2020 6:38 am UTC
PUBLISHER
It's not a simple case of one whole extra panel with extra information -- the panels were heavily restructured for the 3-panel version of the screen.

The main things that are extra on the 4-panel version are:
1. Equipment prices.
2. Mounts and land vehicles.
3. Summary of class abilities.
4. Spell progression tables.

For more details, the best thing to do is compare the preview images of both versions of the screen (see above and https://necroticgnome.com/collections/old-school-essentials/products/old-school-essentials-deluxe-referees-screen-print.)

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
