Fight! 2nd Edition

ADD TO WISHLIST >
Selected Option:

The greatest role-playing game for telling the stories of fighting game characters returns with an updated edition. Featuring expanded and clarified rules for character generation, Special Move construction, and running combat, Fight! 2nd Edition gives you the tools to generate unique Fighters and run adventures featuring exciting tactical combat designed to play and feel like the techniques used in actual fighting games.

In Fight!, you can make traditional martial artists or over-the-top shonen protagonists. Fight with punches and kicks, grapples and throws, or blasts of ki energy. Defy physics with aerial combat, launch devastating combos and counterattacks, and confound the enemy with tactical positioning around the environment. Face off against armies of lesser foes, engage in brawls between gangs of highly-skilled combatants, or have detailed one-on-one duels between fierce rivals.

Fight! 2nd Edition is setting-neutral, so you can tell stories of underground tournaments or worldwide competitions. You can explore historical action-fantasy or martial arts-flavored space opera. Battle through worlds of horrifying monsters and magic or engage in covert operations against colorful evil organizations. Combined with a robust rules set with loads of options, Fight! is the closest you can get to making your own fighting game, played out with your friends at your table or online!

I think you guys really missed a beat by not titling it something like 'Fight! Super Turbo Championship Edition'.

Reading through it, I think this will be a game I enjoy converting characters for rather then actual playing, but I can tell there is a lot of love for the Fighting Game genre in this.

I actually originally intended to do just that, but I bounced some ideas off the community while 2nd edition was in development, and it didn't get a great reception! :)

If you like making characters, but don't see a "campaign" coming out of it, might I suggest getting some friends together and just running a non-story tournament (more like a board game than an RPG)?

Thanks for the kind words!

The argument of “Fight!” being a bad name is only because of the fact I can never find this game. Especially not here. It is too ambiguous a word. Only by luck of the draw have I even heard of this!

Hi Devin. Yes, this a full rules book with all you need to play. It includes all the stuff from 1st edition, revised and expanded with new cool stuff and also content that is from Round 2.
Shonen is fully compatible with 2nd Edition :D

How many pages is this? I've heard it is rather crunchy. I was looking for something not-so-heavy to run Mortal Kombat with.

Hi, Jonathan! As noted above, the whole book is 402 pages. It *is* rather crunchy, but less so than it seems. "Not-so-heavy" is subjective, but you won't find a more on-point system with which to run Mortal Kombat!

You can try the basics of combat using the Quickstart Rules: https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/273889/Fight-2nd-Edition-Quickstart
Then decide if you like it.
Also, check the Review here, is spot on.
If feel like it, you can join the Fight! Discord server and ask the guys there about pro-cons of the game: https://discordapp.com/invite/v3aMyuk

Yes. There is a free Conversion Guide PDF available, but the 2nd edition was designed to not invalidate 1st edition material.

I just have to say that the most impressive feature of this game design, something I didn't see with first edition, is that this game simulates how Frame Data works in a fighting game. So if you are a fighting game afficionado (probably botched that word) or know anybody who loves how Tech works in fighting games and they want to check out a rpg, tell them this about this game.

Here in the comments or the discord noted below by Marco P (https://discord.gg/v3aMyuk) are both valid options; though the discord is likely to get faster replies.

I would be happy to help out however I can. The game is quite dense and while some interactions are explicitly stated, there are a few edge cases that have to be sussed out by context clues. I will admit I have not personally noticed any direct contradictions, but would be interested in seeing your examples.

I don't suppose anybody has a fillable character sheet for this, or perhaps an excel document? Seeing as I want to run this online, I'm in need of such things.

Translation to Spanish was one of the Stretch Goals from the original Kickstarter Campaign. It was not reached, but I understand that the Spanish version is a project that will see light, source: https://divinemadnesspressencastellano.wordpress.com/

My biggest problem with this new edition is the same one I had with the old edition. Chapter 6 offers a lot of useful suggestions for the GM to consider, but at the end of the day, I’m still not entirely clear on what a campaign or adventure is actually supposed to look like in practice just from reading the book.

Essentially an RPG. Every Fighting game out there is essentially an RPG story but with fighting instead of Swords and shields and Guns and stuff like that. You can take a lot of RPG stories and remix it to a Fighting game genre. Even things like Curse of Strahd.

Ah, I see. I suppose I’m a bit dense, then.

Still, the rulebook could’ve stood some additional clarifications for the second edition. Particularly as it relates to actually running the game. The most important bit of information that the GM probably needs is stuck in the introductory chapter where it talks about common tropes. It might’ve been helpful to clearly restate some of that in the opening paragraphs to the GMing chapter.

I completely understand I'm a big Fighting game player and active in the community. So for me, it's easy but for others, it could be like how you were thinking "Where do I start?" The easiest thing to do would be to take a story you love, and just throw the characters in really And go from there.

Watch the Street Fighter 2 anime movie from the mid 90s, it's a perfect representation of what a series of adventures for a game like this could/should be.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
