I see no reference if you allow 3rd party module development... can one write, release, and sell 3rd party creations for this rule set?

Yes, it is allowed. If you wanted it to be endorsed or promoted you could contact the RPGPundit via his social media before publishing, and send him what you wrote for his approval.

Question. Psychic ability rolls include your character level. Skill rolls do not. Is that a typo, or is that how the game’s skill checks work?

Only psychic powers add character level. Regular skills don't.

Has anybody given thought to making an expansion book to add typical bad guy NPC's, commonly seen space ships, and maybe some big animals? This game could sure use that sort of source book.

What a fantastic little gem with a big heart. Role-playing is all about the theater of the mind and cooperative storytelling. There are just enough rules here to create a marvelous space adventure without interfering with the flow of play or the creativity of the GM (or players), but enough to give proper structure. The simple games engine allow me to create and/or convert any monster or alien or adventure on the fly. I love it, and so will you. Rules are there to facilitate play. Unfortunately modern games inhibit creative storytelling by over-regulating play. The best games I have had are those where the rules serve the players and not the other way around and clearly Star Adventurer was created to do just that. The rules of Star Adventurer allow you to be as creative as you want. This rule set will get you playing within an half hour and keep you playing for years. Why are you still reading? At $4.00 it gives you everything you need and just enough more.

What OSR bestiary is most compatible with this game? (I realize the answer is "most of them" so I guess I'm really asking which ones would be recommended.)

Well, typically I would say that most Star Wars movies do have at least one animal encounter at some point, but they're limited to just one. Animals should be special, not typical Just wing it and make up your own animals. Most fights should be against NPC's humanoids with terrible stats using the gear in the game.

My typical enemy grunts are battle droids and clones, both produced in copycat numbers as faceless hordes you take out in job lots.

Still, this game could use an expansion book with pre-generated NPC's, a few big animals, and some common space ships.

why do all saving throws receive CHA modifier, regardless of type? How does being charming or possessing leadership make you dodge things better, etc.?

Hrm... okay. I guess it's kinda cool, helps give weight to CHA to prevent it from being the dump stat for that 6 you rolled. lol

You could always change the Charisma stat to Luck or such.

But, yeah. It would’ve been nice to get that tidbit of info in the game that Charisma is the stat that is used for the supernatural.

I’m going to add one more thing here. I’ve been on a 2 year long hunt for a good Sci-fi opera, 1970’s movie game. Rules light to be sure. I dislike West End Games rules. I had thought Mini-6 for the D6 system fixed it, but their magic/mystic system ruined it. So I posted on RPG.net forum for alternate suggestions, with tons of options, and I actually acquired most of them. I had settled on White Star Galaxy edition, but that needed a sourcebook to make it work.

Star Adventurer is now my top game. It’s just right for how I want to play, and I own the color paper book now. Good job.

Looks great! I'm prepping a demo game and have a quick question. Is a 4-hour recovery necessary for the successful use of a psychic power, or just from a failed attempt? As written, the rules imply I can keep using a psychic power every round until it fails.

Correct. A successful use of a psychic power has no downside. You use the power and it’s ready for another use as well, no rest needed.

It might not match a movie with a farm boy pilot frozen to the ceiling of a snow beast’s cave who failed to telekinetically retrieve his laser sword the first time, but at least he doesn’t suffer amnesia after every power use like wizards in OSR style games usually do.

A simple question. The sample character at the start of the book on page 3 has a Base Savings Throw of 14. That comes from a default 16 + CHA bonus. In that case, a +1 from having a Charisma (CHA) of 13 (+1) to save, so that lowers the BST from default 16 to 15. Now comes my question. Where did the other +1 to save come from? The race is Human (+1 to a pair of the six main attributes of choice, or abilities as they're called in this game, and in this case it was CHA and STR). I assume that meant raising the Ability Score from a 12 to a 13 in both cases. Its not from the background of the character. A DriveTech doesn't boost your Base Saving Throw or CHA. So how does the math work out to have a Base Saving Throw of 14 when you start at 16 and get a single bonus point from having a CHA of 13 (+1)?

You roll for level-1? I assume you create your character and only roll the tables to level up when you reach 2, 3, and so on.

Do Melee Attack bonus and Psychic Laser Sword attack bonuses stack/add together?

Example is the Psychic Warrior subclass of Psychic Knight. That class comes with a base combat bonus of +1, a melee attack of +1, and Psychic Laser Sword attack of +2. I assume that means all knights start with a +4 to attack with a laser sword. Maybe more with more bonuses from high Strength, race and backgrounds.

Just an interesting fact. Lion and Dragon may say that new characters roll on their advancement table, but I don’t think Star Adventurer actually mentions that.

I really dig it. I like the super-tight rules and the diversity of the characters, especially as they grow in power. 100% awesome. Once I get my PDF printed I will probably do a flip through as well. I like the comic book comparison too, perhaps I'll have my copy printed in a similar format. Floppy cover. Staple bind. I remember back a few years folks were using Stars Without Number to play DnD style worlds... I wonder how Star Adventurer would suit a fantasy campaign? I'm betting it would be pretty pretty fun. A bit of creative re-skinning can go a long way. Hmmm...

Love this system. I am so looking forward to playing it and running it. I own Whiote Star and it is a good system, but it is a lot more rules heavy and quite frankly it becomes clunky and chunky when compared tp Star Adventurer. I wish I would have found this one first.....

I am wondering though..... Do you allow others to release support for Star Adventurer?

I loved Lion & Dragon, and I have been thinking of running a space-opera one-shot using old-school D&D rules. I already own White Star by James Spahn, which is a good but a little dry WhiteBox conversion. Could someone tell me how Star adventurer compares to White Star?

Just buy it. For me it is an ideal sweet spot between White Star, SWN - bigger and drier games, and some barebones Black Hacky bit too-light rules games. If you love L&D you will probably like SA too.

Star Adventurer has a lot of small differences that add up. The biggest change is to drop the Vancian Magic system of spells per day that erase themselves from your memory. Now, to be fair White Star has a supplement book called Between Star and Void that has an optional, non-Vancian power system that I recommend for White Star. Star Adventurer has non-Vancian powers only. Star Adventurer also gives a lot of hit points at level 1, but new levels only adding 1HP per level for support classes and 2HP per level for warriors, to avoid the game imbalance that many D&D style RPGs can have at higher levels. Also, when you level up you roll twice or pick once on a table to see what improvements you get, making two players of the same class probably noticeably different at higher levels.

Is it intended that characters' saving throws are fixed, and do NOT decrease as they go up in level?

If so, why do higher HD NPCs/monsters' saving throws decrease?

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
