A CORE GAME BOOK FOR PLAYERS

“We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far.” —H.P. Lovecraft

"Call of Cthulhu has been called “one of the best roleplaying games of all time” (Geek & Sundry). But something that’s overlooked about this classic horror RPG… is that it’s also one of the most versatile and well-researched historical RPGs around... I mean honestly, you can now play CoC in more time periods than your average season of Dr Who. "—Games Vs Play.

"The Investigator Handbook is jam packed with info designed to get players up and running in CoC without muss or fuss – 9/10"—The Gaming Gang.

This is clearly just sold as a PDF, although the description mentions mobi, ePub, prc versions included as well.

Any chance for a printer-friendly version? Even printing out a few pages drains the toner in my printer. Also, why do those who purchase this title throuch chaosium.com get the ePub/MOBI version and those of us who purchased it here do not?

Cheers, Bob

Is the 'Full-sized Preview' a joke? Two blank pages and 4 pages of credits is a preview? Seriously?

Do you need both books to run the game (as keeper) or will the Keeper book alone suffice? In other words, is the keeper going to need stuff *only* in the player book in order to show new players how to make characters before play commences?

I'm a veteran keeper currently playing from 5.2 with some Gold Book stuff tossed in to paper over certain cracks (though I own all the editions in many formats and re-covers) and 52 bucks for a couple of PDFs is a sizable investment for what I suspect is going to be mostly cruft, especially as I found 6th edition to be confused and just about useless as an in-game resource - for me.

Also - are these PDFs properly indexed? Can I navigate quickly back and forth using entries in the left-hand sidebar of the Acrobat reader? I only ask because none of my Chaosium PDFs to date (6th Ed, Gold Book BRP, Gaslight, various scenario books) have an index and it makes using a PDF in-game more difficult.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can answer.

My copy of the 7th Edition Keeper book is fairly well bookmarked.

I found a review that detailed this book as is character creation, optional character rules, and other things to help new players. It is not the full rule system. Due to that, I stuck with only the Keeper edition.

So the (new) character generation is covered in the Keeper book?

I contacted Chaosium through facebook and asked this question. They responded by saying that there is different content in Investigator's Guide and Keeper's. They said Investigator Guide has large sections geared towards character creation. Also, Keeper's Guide is 488 pages and Investigator's is 288.

I did some digging after I posted and found a really good review. It clarified what I needed - The Investigator book is character creation, optional character rules, and other things to help new players. It is not a full rule system.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
