Has anyone ever found out why the character generation includes "ally/rival/enemy"? I can't remember this feature from Traveller v.1 (70s). Have found they're just useless fluff that could be actual skills. I get that they're expected to be colour a referee can deploy in game, but... if you want colour the referee can just introduce one. There's no reason for it to be built into character generation.

Otherwise, useless. I rolled up one character that mustered out at 38 with nothing but zero-level skills and 8 or 10 NPCs.

If you're playing with a group, you can use them to connect with the other players, and you each take a zero-level skill for each connection. Otherwise, they are connections you can call on (allies) or that the Ref can introduce (rivals and enemies). You should still have got a skill roll for each term--at least one--on the chart of your choice, before you take the Life Events or Survival roll, giving you a few level 1 skills. Plus another skill roll for each Advancement roll you succeed at.

Has anyone ever printed the COLOR version in B&W? I just bought this and want to use a service to print it and bind it, but the B&W is missing the artwork (I understand why), but on many pages there is full page art replaced with a giant X-tangle. I don't really want to pay to have that printed either, lol. My preference would be to print the color version in B&W, but want to make sure there are not any pages where this would come out too dark to be of use.

Thanks!

Well, guess I'm going to find out. Test printed a couple of pages here, but went ahead and ordered from an online printer. Cost about $23 with free shipping for a spiral bound copy.

i ran it thru a PDF minimiser first, which made the printing a heck of a lot easier.

I'm assuming from the lack of ANY clarification, this must be version 1? I understand there are two versions of Mongoose Traveller.

No it's 2nd Edition, updated to the latest 2020 reprint. 1st Edition Mongoose Traveller is on DTRPG as well and has a more traditional looking black Traveller cover.

It's a great game, book, etc. Seriously, it's great. However, after purchasing that, I can't purchase any of the "ship plans". They are completely...umm...let's just say they are incredibly horrible. The "yacht" has the same crew as a subsidized liner and the only ONE luxury berth an a yacht. Entertaining friends? Where is the luxury berth? Political missions? I can keep pointing out about this and that on every plan. Why put them into this great book?

Is it just my copy, or have the hull points disappeared from all of the starship pages in the 2020 updated versoon?

There's a difference between the full coloured and the b/w version, stats for the auto cannon (p.136 both documents) differ in dmg.
Looks to me like the coloured version is outdated compared to the b/w version.
Is this just in my copy?
Ideas if this will be updated?
Does anybody know of further differences?

I am lost about Traveller editions, this is not a judgment but a real question : it is 5th edition ? 6th ?

The Mongoose versions of Traveller are outside the regular edition numbering. They are based on Classic Traveller with a great deal of original development.

How does it compare to other versions of Traveller or Cepheus Engine ?
Customer avatar
Lamar H August 09, 2019 6:25 pm UTC

Cepheus Engine is basically just Mongoose Traveller first edition. Mongoose second edition is a modified version of Classic Traveller, especially if you're familiar with the rules expansions like Mercenary and High Guard. It's a great deal less complex than fifth edition, but then what isn't? Mongoose has done a lot of work to retain the feel of Classic while at the same time making the game extremely playable. It has a nice balance of simplicity and crunch. The biggest complaint I had with this version is that they separated the spaceship generation rules out into a separate supplement, but that's not that big of a deal. Overall, I found this version more than acceptable.

Just curious, but I see there's a full color version and printer friendly B&W version. Can you print the color version if you so choose?
Customer avatar
Andrew M January 09, 2020 11:29 am UTC
I don't see why not, but I suggest a printer with refillable ink cartridges.
Customer avatar
Matthew B September 14, 2020 2:44 pm UTC
Every page is FULL COLOR top to bottom, side to side. That is a lot of ink or toner.

While we wait for official word, based on my comparison of the latest and previous Core Rulebook PDF versions, these are the two most notable differences:

1) Both the full-color and print-friendly Feb '18 version has a much more granular table of contents, making it easier to find a specific topic within a chapter

2) The resolution of illustrations in the full-color Feb '18 version has been cut down, making the PDF itself about 40 megabytes smaller. The resolution is still very good, so this should only serve to make the PDF more accessible on slower or memory-constrained devices

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
