The BoL Hack

ADD TO WISHLIST >

What do you get when you mash up arguably the best swords and sorcery role playing game ever, Barbarians of Lemuria (BoL) with the Original 1970s Fantasy Roleplaying Game? That’s the question I asked and this book is my attempt answer to that question, taking the best bits from each. This is massively trimmed down from BoL and includes none of the background material (which you can get from BoL: Mythic Edition or BoL: Legendary Edition) – so you can use The BoL Hack for any swords and sorcery setting you like.

the term / phrase 'Hit Dice' gets used a few times across the book, but it appears it got removed from any of the examples / rules. Particularly p.24, and "To determine their Hit Points, you roll the indicated number and type of dice." while the creatures have a flat hit point value in their statistics.

What was the intention with Hit Dice?

Is this game somehow influenced by "The Black Hack" or it's a pure clone of the Original D&D? Does it also have rules from The Black Hack?
Thank you.

My biggest problem with BOL is that I cannot manage to convert D&D
monsters to BOL...and I have plenty of D&D minis I'd like to play with
BOL rules...are there classic D&D monsters stats in THE BOL HACK?

Rather late to this conversation but would it be possible for you to share your conversion system on the Champions of Lemuria forum?

Nice book. The BoL and OSR hack seems to go well together. One question - is there a reason why the Group Ritual option was left out of the spell casting requirements?

Simon,

any chance those of us who got the CB2 on lulu as hardcopy could get our hands on the d20 version?

I'm intrigued by this one, but I'd like to hear some other good stuff before I buy it.

What do you want to hear? It is BoL with a D20, stripped down to the basics and with some added class features to harken back to ODD. It is for all intents and purposes BoL for 2.50 USD. Do you have any specific questions about it?

I asked this on the G+ thread:

"Having never read the original BoL I have 2.5 questions... :^)
1.) Why are Heroes and Magicians always at odds? (Does this mean you can't have mixed parties?)
2.) What's so unique about the magic system?"

I received some good replies there, but if you'd like to chime in...

Ah yes, I saw that post on G+! 1) Is "Setting inherent" and as such can easily be ignored If your setting is different. 2.) The freeform and flexibility of it. As there is no fixed spell list just guidelines on how to measure the power and impact of an effect, a mage is truly free. However as a caveat, it is clearly geared away from the classic fireball throwing wizard of DnD to match the tone of classic sword and sorcery.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
