The Things We Leave Behind

Customers are advised that contents of this book include themes of disease, infection, and contamination that may upset the reader (and players).

An ENnie award winning anthology of 6 modern day scenarios for the Call of Cthulhu roleplaying game published by Chaosium, Inc, edited by Jeff Moeller and written by Brian M. Sammons, Scott Dorward, Simon Brake, Oscar Rios, and Jeff Moeller, with art by Davide Como, Badger McInnes, Dean Engelhardt, and Stephanie McAlea.

Taking its inspirational cues from Delta GreenFargoBlood Simple, and True Detective, the book takes a mature look at the horror of human nature and its ability to be just as disturbing as anything from the Mythos.

Six Adventures into Horror and the Unknown

  • Ladybug, Ladybug, Fly Away Home, by Jeff Moeller. The investigators search for an abducted child in suburban Cleveland, Ohio, where time becomes a serious concern.
  • Forget Me Not, by Brian M. Sammons.  An accident in a TV truck in rural Michigan sees the investigators awake in a ditch with no recollection of how they got there.
  • Roots, by Simon Brake. Inquiries into a missing teen will teach the investigators that some mid-west communities prefer to be left alone.
  • Hell in Texas, by Scott Dorward. After a suicide at a church's east Texas Halloween haunted house, strange events threaten the lives and sanity of all those in the vicinity, including the investigators.
  • The Night Season, by Jeff Moeller, shows that fandom in Anchorage, Alaska, can go too far when reality begins to shift.

The Dark Forest
Regular price:  €10,97

An entity from Finnish folklore takes hold of a small U.S. town completely unprepared for the corruption and horror it brings.

This scenario deals with extremely mature themes including the horror of sexual abuse. While this is handled as an "off screen" past event, it is one of the driving facets of an NPC's character. As such, please be aware that some of the themes are quite mature and are suitable for adult gamers only. It is required that you clear such subjects with your players first, before playing, and away from the table in order to not cause distress.

Suggestion to anyone running Ladybug Ladybug Flyaway Home: Change the "Zip guns" to 3d Printed guns and increase the jam rate on them.

I think I read that someone complained about the quality of the printing for this book. Is this still the case? Has their been any improvements?
Thanks!

Hi Frank, T. I went looking and found the two reviews that mentioned the printing quality. One was 2017, the other was 2018, and per Stephanie (Stygian Fox's owner), DTRPG has upped their paper quality since that time. If you order a physical copy and receive a product that is sub-par in regards to printing, definitely reach out to DTRPG's excellent customer support (and save the box too, as they usually ask for information off of the shipping label).

This sounds like a cool idea. I tend to just use Cthulhu Dark these days instead of CoC. Would it fit the structure of that system?

Hi there!

I just bought the book, and I'm quite sure, that I selected "Watermarked PDF + Softcover B&W Book", but the webpage didn't register the pdf file. Could you please supply it to me somehow, as I would love to dive right into reading and preparing. (;,,,;)

Trés bon recueil de scénarios. J'ai matrisé Forget me not 3 fois, dont une fois enregistré ici :

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCfAIjR2fuJCvnLQt3RAQj0A

Dispo aussi sur cette chaine, Roots/Racines.

Prochainement Ladybug.

Merci Stygian Fox

Small Errata note - In Ladybug - There is a security guard in the opening scene that seems to disappear after first being mentioned. (Trying to keep it spoiler free) I will likely replace the greeter with the guard in my run.

I have a couple questions about this product:
-- is the game system CoC 6th or 7th edition ?
-- are modern era pregenerated characters provided ?

Thanks !

-- 7th ed., but there are a few places in Ladybug, Ladybug (the only one I've run so far) where they fall into 6th ed. mechanics, e.g. subtracting a fixed percentage from skills instead of increasing the difficulty (or adding penalty dice). That's probably because 7th ed. was fairly new when it was written, and it takes a while to digest all of the subtleties of the rule changes.

-- Modern Era, yes
pregenerated characters, no.

I had a question about the scenarios since the description is somewhat vague. What time period do the investigations take place in? 1920s, Modern, etc? I've heard great things about your adventures and I'd love to run my investigators through them before forcing them to ship off to Europe to solve the mystery of the Orient Express. (It sounds like they might be wanting a vacation from America after they are done with what you have created)

They are all set in the modern day US and the investigations all take full account of modern technology, social media, etc. Some of them could be moved to Europe without too much trouble. (I've heard tell of a game of Ladybug transported to Sweden)

I am curious if these are interlinked scenarios, separate ones, or if they have a sorta framing device like with Trail of Cthulhu's final revelations?

I find this product very interesting, but as it doesn’t contain the campaign-mode and there is no way to get it I am not interested in it anymore. I really dislike non-cosmetic exclusives, to the level that I refuse to support / buy products that have those.

So I can open in Chrome but not with Preview on Mac OSX like I can most PDFs. Any ideas?

Not sure why that's happening, but an option could be to print it from chrome and then open the print preview in Preview. You'll lose the table of contents though if it has one. :/

The only time I've had pdfs not open in preview were those forms that required adobe reader, but this shouldn't be that case plus you were able to open it in chrome.

If the print preview thing works well enough, there are programs that let you make a table of contents and save it to the PDF. They usually are $5-10 though. Not the best solution, but hopefully that helps somewhat.

In a few weeks. Physical book proofs have to be ordered up and carefully reviewed, since once those go out, any minor errors are written in stone. They also have to be approved by the licensor (Chaosium), so they are always available a few weeks after the pdf.

Roots has parallels with a few films that pit a lone protagonist against an isolated community. Those protagonists did not survive. However, if that's the sort of story you want to explore there's no reason you can't - the hook relies on a personal connection to one of the PCs, with the scenario designed to be especially horrific for that one person as a result.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
