The Crying Blades Houserules

turned into a Black Hack hack

If you've seen The Crying Blades, you know which game I'm talking about...

But you probably didn't, so just know this little game is inspired by The Black Hack from David Black.

The Crying Hack is a fantasy, classic OSR, easy game. It's built on the fundation of The Black Hack and it aims to retain its simplicity and flexibility, while introducing a few twists and houserules. Those houserules are a streamlined, simplified version of some of those you will find in the complete game The Crying Blades.

In the Crying Hack, for example, you will find: Attributes based Saving Throws, the Gift score for re-rolls and multiclassing, new and unique talents for each class, a special melee combat roll that resolves attacking and defending in a single unique roll, special rolls for Turns-based exploration and encounters, Hirelings, etc.

And if you like The Crying Hack, please consider buying a copy of The Crying Blades.

The game is officially out of beta!

But still... in case you find any typos or mistakes, please get in touch.

I am not sure I understand why you need to resolve both attack and defense on the same roll. What if the monster wants to attack another PC and not the one who attacked it?

Hi Todor, thanks for your question.

I like to resolve both attack and defense in the same roll mostly for two reasons:
- The monster is likely to attack a PC that attacked it because it often makes sense to imagine a scene where the two of them are mutually engaged in combat
- The single roll avoids most (not all) of those rounds where both the PC and the monster miss their attack

In other words, the combat situations described at my table often center on multiple one-to-one exchanges of attacks (because of the PCs' positions on our imaginary map, because of the PCs' tactics for example to engage a monster so that it will not attack a weaker character, and so on). In those scenes, we quickly got bored of those "useless" rounds where both sides miss their attacks.
The single roll resolves that. We had lots of fun and bloodier fights with that.
It still allows flexibility: if the PC attacks monster-one, then monster-two can still attack the PC and it simply...See more

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
