PWYW DURING CORONA OUTBREAK!  STAY HOME!  STAY SAFE!

The NPC Creator and Emulator is a quick and easy way to bring NPCs to life in your fantasy RPG campaign.  You can also use this to help flesh out a player character if you want.  For creating an NPC or character, there are tables for each of the following:

  • Job Training
  • Social Background
  • Current Economic Status
  • Character Motivation
  • Character Flaw
  • Demeanor Description
  • Physical Description

Once you have an NPC created, you can emulate their conversations with PCs in two ways.

  • Use tables to pick a random topic and the NPCs attitude about that topic
  • Use tables to provide plot progressing information through the conversation

Best of all, the second PDF included in this purchase uses a form with Javascript enabled buttons that you can push to generate all of these things.  Bonus: the Javascript version also includes random fantasy (European-ish) names for the NPC not included in the regular PDF!  You don't need dice or even all the tables provided if you don't want it.  Just hit a button to auto-magically generate what you need!

This is my first product released under the umbrella of Play Every Role.

Not having any luck with seeing the button on the PDF. Tried enabling Javascript and I still can't see it. Tried viewing via browser (Chrome) and stand alone (Adobe Acrobat Reader DC.) Suggestions? Also, your contact widget on your blog is not working. :-)

I don’t know why that happens for some people. The buttons are all on the last page, they are JavaScript, and they work for me on mobile in my Acrobat app. Let me do some more digging on it later tonight and update you then. Sorry about this!

It looks like DriveThru is wiping out the JavaScript now which means the buttons will not be accessible to anyone. Bummer. I can send you my version of the file directly so you can access the buttons. Sorry for the hassle!

Wow, that's pretty heavy handed of them. I was even thinking about doing something like that since I write a lot of random generators in javascript. I guess I'll need to host them on my home page or something.

DTRPG techs are on the case! Hopefully they can figure it out soon!

A very kind DriveThru tech got it fixed! The watermark was what was stripping out the JavaScript. I turned off the watermark, re-uploaded, and now it works fine on my end. Thanks for bringing this to my attention!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
