1001 Things Sampler #1

Welcome to the "1001 Things" collections!

This is a sampler of 10 entries from each of the first five 1001 Things collections from Wintertree, now available in a bundle (the only way you can get 1001 Battered Books) as well as separately. Even with just ten of each, you have some great additions to your game.

There are 10 Awkward Art Objects in here. Do the adventurers think they've got it made once they beat the last monster and gather the loot? Maybe not, if that loot includes things like rugs, tapestries, paintings, and other large, fragile, or otherwise less than portable objects.

Then there are 10 Perplexing Potions. Are your healing potions all alike? And easily distinguished from the strength potions? Throw a couple of these into the mix and baffle the players who think they know it all!

Next we come to 10 Hopeful Hirelings. The party is looking to hire some muscle? Or at least someone to lug those awkward art objects? These are the first ten people who show up in response to the announcement. Of course, the players don't have to know that #4 will stab them in the back any time he thinks it's a good idea.

Ater that, there are 10 Perilous Places. Because "some cave somewhere" isn't nearly as evocative as the Echoing Treasury of the Phantasm, and the Church of the Wraiths, which is near the Demonic Badlands, is just begging to have an adventure designed around it.

Last is the one that's only available in the Bundle #1: 10 Battered Books. Because even the Codex of Cookery is interesting if it's written in a foreign language! There are all kinds of books in there.

So spice up your game a bit, and have fun!

Oh, and this book, from the full 1001 Battered Books?

This book is entitled Mararius's Spellbook. It is a square (10" on a side) tome with a cover of scuffed orchid crystal, set with four hyacinth topazes, with a locked tin clasp trapped with a poisoned needle. The pages are thin paper with block writing in sepia. It is written in a secret alphabet. The book has been gnawed on by mice, damaging about 20% of it. Another 20 pages appear to have fallen out.

Obviously Mararius uses cipher fonts from Wintertree! Block writing and a secret alphabet? Sounds to me like Blaise!

Don't forget to take a look at Wintertree's many fonts, including ancient and esoteric alphabets, dice, ciphers, hieroglyphs, and many other useful fonts for gamers.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
