The wizard’s staff hums with the power of an unleashed spell.

The assassin’s cybernetic arm ejects a hidden blade.

The super-powered defender of New York melts the robots to slag with his heat vision.

The intrepid investigator stands firm against the mind wrenching eldritch horror before him.

Cleaner, clearer and more concise, Strands of Fate 2nd Edition continues down the path set forth by the original Strands of Fate; providing a stand-alone set of core rules for using the Fate game system to tell exciting stories of action, adventure, horror and intrigue across an infinite variety of time periods and genres.

Strands of Fate 2nd Edition contains…

  • Core Rules – This book is fully self-contained, and contains all the rules you need for making characters and playing the game.
  • Aspects – Full rules for the creation and use of Aspects, the popular narrative mechanic that has defined the Fate game system since its inception.
  • Strands– There are guidelines for creating them, as well as four sample Strands you can use as written, alter to suit your needs, or use as examples when creating your own. These include:
    • Strands of Cthulhu – In which desperate investigators confront the minions of the Elder Gods.
    • Strands of Fantasy – In which bold adventurers fight against savage and ancient evils for honor and treasure.
    • Strands of Valor – In which heroes imbued with super powers stand against tyranny and annihilation.
    • Strands of Neon and Chrome – In which cybernetically enhanced underdogs fight back against the oppressive mega-corporate elite.
  • Perks and Powers – The extraordinary and supernatural advantages that separate your characters from the masses. Whether a mutant psychic, a crusty old wizard, a crazed cultist, an ancient vampire, a cross wielding priest, or a genetically enhanced cyber-soldier, we’ve got you covered. Powers are presented as self-contained special abilities that are defined with Aspects, and further detailed through the application of Limitations and Enhancements.
  • Deviations – An entire chapter is dedicated to providing modular, variant rules that are added to, subtracted from, or used in place of the standard core rules. Deviations serve as a series of dials and switches, which can be used to tune the rules to better suit the story you want to tell.
  • Antagonists – The Game Mastery chapter contains a number of sample NPCs and creature to challenge your PCs with, or to serve as examples when creating your own.

Strands of Fate 2nd Edition is a fully self-contained Fate game, and requires no other supplements for use. It is built upon the branch of Fate rules originally published in Strands of Fate 1st Edition and later refined in Nova Praxis.

Note: The digital PDF version of this book is an “Augmented” PDF, and was designed with laptops, tablets and smartphones in mind. It is filled with useful links, and features a special layout purpose built to speed up navigation on a digital device. The tabs along the side of each page are linked to the start of each chapter, and a "Contents" link at the bottom of each page will allow you to quickly skip to the fully linked Contents page.

Does this edition still have the control metapower? I loved that the version in SoF V1 managed to accomplish most of what Mage the Ascension did in basically 2-4 pages (3-5 if you count the "Sorcerer" power package in Strands of Power).

Indeed it does, but it's revised to be a bit tighter and has a few more options.

The page count for the new 2nd Edition of SoF is 228 pages yet the 1st version of SoF is 501 pages and the SoP book is 338 pages. So that's 228 vs 839 pages. I only bring this up as that seems like Allot of content to cut out for the new editions page count.

Is the new edition a complete RPG? Is it tighter more condensed layout?

Tighter layout and page size are the biggest factors, as well as cleaner presentation. SoF2 also doesn't include the Organization, Vehicle and Large Scale Conflict rules from SoF1, which we decided to cut in favor of focussing on more important/popular elements and to keep the book at a more manageable size.
That said, those systems port to SoF2 rather easily if you already have them from SoF1.

Does this version of the system have a proper bestiary? I had trouble running 1E because I had to make all the opposition myself.

It has a small bestiary, not complete at all but its a start and gives you a solid set of examples so that it is pretty simple to create new creatures and threats.

There seems to be a disconnect between pg 16 and 27 when describing perks and skills. Page 27 seems to indicate that CPL adjusts the number of perks a PC has and that CEL effects the number of skills a PC has. Yet the table on pg 16 shows CEL controls both perks and skills. I think page 27 is correct and page 16 table needs to be adjusted.

Sorry for late reply and I am sure you have by now figured this out already. CPL simply limits the power available Perks to choose from while CEL shows how many perks and skills you should have on your character at that level. So let’s say you have a new character starting at Adept. They get 21 skills and 3 perks. Now if the power level is heroic, they can choose grounded or heroic perks. If the power level was Mythic, they could select from grounded, heroic, paragon, and Mythic perks (but not legendary).

The print version is available now! If you purchased the PDF before I posted this on Jan 3rd 2019, you should have gotten an email with links to purchase the print version at a discount. If not, it's because you've set your DTRPG account to be unable to receive messages.

In that case:

First, consider allowing publishers to reach out to you. We often send out notifications of sales and discounts.

Second, check your spam/trash folder. GMail especially likes to send these things to spam.

Third, if you purchased the PDF before Jan 3rd 2019, and you didn't receive an email with a discount, contact Void Star Studios at customerservice@voidstarstudios.com. Be sure to include the order number from the email you received from DTRPG when you ordered the PDF.

We’ve received the latest print proofs for the softcover versions. They look good. The hardcover version should arrive in the next day or so, and should be the same. So if all goes well, print versions should be available before the New Year!

When do you intend to release the vehicle rules supplement and is it really going to be enough content to justify not including them in the main book?

Very soon! I placed the order for what should be the final print proofs today. Once they arrive, if they look good, I’ll throw the switch.
So hopefully no more than a couple of weeks, maybe less. Depends on print and ship times.

This is a terrific game. It's essentially a crunchier, more codified version of Fate Core. Really smooth mechanics.

I would like to see some reviews from some of you that have purchased this. Please. Based on the short description I can't really see any major reason to get this. What makes Strands of Fate a worthy investment? Is it a superior magic system to the Fate Core ones published by Evil Hat? Are the super powers cooler or more balanced? Is the cyberware and bio-mechanical-enhancements better than what I might find in one of the Fate Core science fiction games? Or is the benefit that Strands of Fate covers a lot of genres under one cover without conflicts, which makes it more ideal for "cross-dimensional" style games, such as a Fate conversion of TORG or RIFTS or similar "reality-mashup" games?

The skill pyramid is gone, replaced with a set number of universal attributes (4 physical, 4 mental, 4 social). Areas of exceptional skill are conveyed through perks and aspects. This grows through a very streamlined leveling system, each game gives 1 to 2 Xp. 6 xp = level up. What you get varies but can be a skill increase or a perk (stunt).

It has a level of “crunch” to the combat rules that are more fulfilling then the fate core system. The auto fire rules and beam weapons are great. You get bonuses but check to see if you out of ammo or need to let the weapon cool for example.

I love the advantage / disadvantage system where you re-roll minuses or pluses respectively.

The powers are really well ballanced and clear.

You will need to really read and re-read the Strands section to understand how to “tool box” this version of the rules but it’s an easy read for those familiar with fate.

I really recommend it! I enjoyed fate core but really...See more

Also what might interest Fate gamers: SoF (both editions) is based more on Fate 3.0 than Fate Core and SoF 2e is kinda streamlined version of Nova Praxis.

In addition, SoF 2e provides you with Favor/Disfavor rules similar to Advantage/Disadvantage in D&D 5e which seems like a neat idea; the book gives you plenty of optional/alternative rules as well and suggestions which could be used depending on the genre or type of game you're interested in.

Excellent use of the FATE system, easily my favorite yet. I plan on continuing an old Fate Core game soon and will definitely be converting over and using these rules.

One issue I have is with the skill modes option. First, it is possible to reach 5 in a skill without a perk. Secondly, you often end up with more ranks total in skills then you should have have for your experience level and the coresponding milestones. Both very easy fixes, let the player choose which points to remove, and skill modes themselves are not required rules.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
