Tomes of Cthulhu II

Tomes of Cthulhu II is a generic supplement written for horror games based on the works of H.P. Lovecraft. It contains 20 new forbidden tomes of knowledge not meant to be known that can be added to a game. Some of these books have alternative editions and formats, perhaps only one variant but others have more. There are also references to some original sites that could be discovered that knowledge came from.

Each book, and variant, has its name given, as well as any author, if known, details on its appearance, when and how it was published, again if known, and what sort of knowledge might be found within. For knowledge of the Mythos and loss of sanity, a Least to Greatest approximation of what amount is given. The languages the books are written in are covered and there are notes on any sorts of spells or particular areas of knowledge that might be covered.

Many of the books were written in the late 19th to early 20th centuries but a couple are more recent and there are others that are far more ancient, the oldest dating back over three thousand years. Most, but not all, of the authors are fictitious and some of the events are not and there is a genuine alternative to a book, a film, as well.

This PDF supports Adobe layers and the page backgrounds and images can be disabled to make printing easier.

Some sample titles are:

The Fall of Troy: An alternative version of the events of the Trojan War and what really happened and caused it, in several different editions up to the 17th century.

An Investigation and Analysis of the Flora and Fauna of the Tunguska Region Following the 1908 Event by Dr. Prikhodko Maksim Anatolievich: A report of an expedition to the Tunguska region during the First World War, and samples that were collected during it.

Quos uelut deos colebant by Giordano Bruno: A book of forbidden knowledge penned by the friar on beings that are worshipped as gods.

One page is the front cover, one the front matter and one an ad for other supplements.

Print on Demand Version

The print on demand version of this supplement looks different to the PDF version, due to limitations in the templates used in the PDF. There are no page backgrounds and the cover is different. See the images below for more details.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
