Low Fantasy Gaming is a tabletop RPG built for gritty adventures in low or moderate magic settings. It has simple rules, dangerous combat, flexible PC customisation, and mysterious, unpredictable magic. Designed for short, episodic adventures in sandbox worlds, LFG provides the mechanics and tables needed for easy GM improvisation. It’s a heady mix of the best old school, modern, and new game design, wrapped around a familiar d20 core.

Main Features

  • Full Colour and B&W Line Art versions.
  • 9 Classes: Artificer, Barbarian, Bard, Cultist, Fighter, Monk, Ranger, Rogue & Magic User; only two of which involve magic.
  • 12th Level Max eliminates the most powerful spells, and keeps the mightiest monsters scary.
  • Unique Features: every 3rd level design your own PC ability in conjunction with your GM. Don't want to make your own? Choose from 36 examples instead.
  • Roll Equal or Under for attribute checks (including degrees of success) makes every stat point matter (rather than just the modifiers).
  • Skills provide access to a level based Reroll Pool, smoothing the fickleness of d20 probability distribution.
  • Willpower & Perception attributes replace Wisdom.
  • Diminishing Luck attribute replaces saving throws and powers some Martial Exploits.
  • Minor, Major & Rescue Exploits on top of damage, not in lieu, promote improvised stunts and moments of greatness.
  • Dangerous Combat: Dropping to zero hp requires a roll on the Injuries & Setbacks table and healing is delayed by 1d3 minutes (magical or otherwise). Players don't roll to find out if their PC is All Dead or Mostly Dead until the battle ends and someone checks the body.
  • Party Retreat & Chase rules allow the GM to throw whatever makes sense at the party, unshackling them from balanced encounters and quarantined zones.
  • 5 minute Short Rests allow PCs to attempt Willpower checks to recover hit points and class abilities, encouraging the party to push on rather than camp.
  • Long Rests take 1d6 days (or 1d4 in a safe, comfortable environment), mitigating the nova, rest, repeat problem for adventures with long periods between battles (eg: wilderness treks).
  • Dark & Dangerous Magic tests and Divine Rebuke tests make all spell casting inherently uncertain. No at-will, teleport, mind reading or resurrection magic. Magic Users are less reliant on spells, proficient in one handed weapons and light armour.
  • Evocative Spells: Spells have been tweaked and renamed, eg: Silent Image, Invisibility, Magic Missile and Hold Monster are instead Shadows & Dust, A Wisp Unseen, Lash of Unerring Pain and Crush of the Warp.
  • Rare Magic Items, with obvious and discreet attunements, that unlock as their owners level up.
  • GM Tables for Weather, Exploration Events, Random Encounters, Traps, Treasure, Disease, Madness, Tavern Brawls, Hirelings, Mass Battle, Naval Combat, NPC Quirks, Rival Adventurers, Blackpowder, and more.
  • 130+ Monsters including effective Boss Monster options (eg: Off Turn Attacks match the party's action economy, and Stronger Luck grants saves even when a save is not normally permitted), plus Custom Monsters guide.
  • Online Play Support: custom LFG character sheets are available for online VTTs Roll20, Fantasy Grounds MoreCore, Foundry, and Tabletop Simulator!
  • Open Game Content: 99% of LFG text is "Open Game Content" under the Open Game Licence. Want to make your own adventures or expansions for LFG and sell them? Go right ahead!
  • Character Sheets: Illustrated Colour and B&W character sheets (including a B&W Form Fillable PDF) are available as free downloads via DTRPG.
  • GM Screen: 4 panel GM Screen PDF is available for free download via DTRPG.
  • Starter Adventures: Three starter adventures are available for free download via DTRPG (Revelry in Northgate, Call of the Colossus, and Gift of the Silent God).
  • Rules as Guidelines. The GM is the final authority on all LFG rules, which are expected to be tweaked to fit table preferences.

Prefer video summaries? Google Low Fantasy Gaming on Youtube for a range of 5 min videos on (i) How to Play, (ii) Magic, (iii) Combat Options, (iv) Danger & Grit, and more.

What is the difference between the Standard and Premium color books? What makes one $20 more expensive?

Hi Kenneth, it's simply the print cost difference. The colour and print quality is better on the premium version - DTRPG has an explanation here: https://help.drivethrupartners.com/hc/en-us/articles/12780745552535-The-Basics-of-Book-Printing#h_01HAVQKT2M0EA4NQEWHKD76Y0A (scroll to the bottom). I have a couple of questions about this book. Hopefully you have answers!

1. For Unique Features, can you elaborate on how the power tiers are intended to work? Would a PC be required to take a UF 3 times to gain all 3 power tiers? Would the power tier scale up as the PC hit certain levels? Using Armour Training or Borderlands Scout as an example, can you explain how the power tiers work perhaps?

2. For GM's what wish to convert existing monsters or spells from earlier editions of D&D, what edition would you recommend as the conversion source? i.e. what edition of D&D did you use to write the existing spells and monsters in this book?

Thanks!

Hi Jeffrey,

I think we probably covered this in Discord just now, but for others who might read this later:

1. It's GM's call as to how the tiers work, depending on how powerful you want your game, your setting, the party make up, and so on. The intention is for players to make their own UFs to be approved by the GM. The ones in the book are just examples for inspiration.

2. Monsters are based on Swords & Wizardry with higher damage expressions, and no doubt other tweaks I've long since forgotten!
Hope this helps :)

Oh yes! The B&W Deluxe has always been available here in PDF and print - you get both PDFs, and if you choose the "Standard Colour" book, that is actually the B&W line art illustrated version, with white background (just with some colour headings).

If you choose the "Premium Colour" book, then that is the real colour book, with the parchment background, colour illustrations, etc. Hope that makes sense.

personally this has become my favorite ttrpg right now. just wished spells were listed by level instead of alphabetically sense it makes it a small inconvenience when you make a magic user or level up and get a new spell.

Dear Stephen (or else), I am interested in your product but am French-speaking. I know the chances are very low, but would a french translation could hit the market any time soon (or later)?
Thanks in advance for your reply. I don't know if I am alone thinking this, but I somehow prefer the "standard" B&W illustations. Not only for their old-school vibe, but also because they are gorgeously detailed in their own way. From quickly watching the "flicking" thru the books video, it seems like the "Full Colour" has more illustrations overal though. Please tell me I am wrong! ^^

From the perspective of someone who is not used to d20 level-based systems... What is the reason behind monsters inflicting a bonus effect on a Nat 19 specifically? Would that bonus effect not happen on a Nat 20? I see that some monsters have effects on 19-20 etc, so I presume that some monsters should be more likely to inflict special effects?

Tommy I love crits but they only happen (generally) on a 20 or a 5% chance on an attack roll. I wanted more cool stuff happening more often, so I made Nat 19 effects occur on a 19. This means every attack roll there's a 10% chance of a special thing happening. That's the reasoning behind it. Some larger or more dangerous monsters have increased crit and/or Nat 19 effect ranges. Crits can be quite devastating in this game, depending on the monster's damage dice and HD. You could of course make all Nat 19 effects also happen on a 20 , it would just make the game more dangerous (I approve!).

Thanks for the quick reply Stephen, it's much appreciated. What you're saying makes complete sense to me, and the extra pressure on the PC's are a welcome thing for my table.

Come to think of it, the main source to my confusion was the community content called "LFG Monster Manual Redone". Some effects there are listed as "19-20" while others are only 19, hence my confusion. The core rulebook simply lists Nat 19 for the special effects.

Again, thanks for taking the time to answer. Cheers!

So I don't how this slipped by editing, but in this book you fail to define what the Staggered condition is.
What happens to a character when they are staggered? What mechanical penalties do they take?

Hi Scott, p.79, you are Staggered when you reach half hp. Under the default rules there are no inherent penalties for being Staggered - rather some monster and class abilities trigger when you become Staggered. Hope this helps.

Adventures are easily converted either way, just swap out monster and trap stats. You may need to tweak frequency of magical treasure. The many tables in the GM section would be fairly easily converted. Unique Features are not dissimilar to feats. Spells are based on older DnD variants, you could swap them out. You could port across certain LFG rules and tools to 5e with some adjustment (like chase tables, Party Retreat, Luck stat, Minor/Major Exploits, Rescues, etc).

Low Fantasy Gaming has now entirely replaced D&D5e at my table. Its quasi-realistic grit is something that is missing from most modern tables. The rules have been finely tuned and crafted to allow that classic old-school RPG style to seep into your storytelling and gaming playstyle. It is a beautiful book well deserved to be amongst the great classics of tabletop roleplaying rule books. I received the printed Deluxe Edition and the book quality blew me away!!!

Hello,

I have been an GM and gamer since the 70's when the first little white boxed edition of Dungeons & Dragons came out "yeah lol I'm old" This is great system and I like the game for the most part. "But" as I have seen so many systems over the years do, it seems this one included. No encumbrance, nothing in Strength stating lift, carry, etc. This to me seems like a very important aspect of any game ..

Is this an oversight and or did I miss something?

Thanks

No baked in setting, except that the spells and Unique Features refer to names in the Midlands Low Magic Sandbox Setting (also on DTRPG).

We made Original LFG first, then the Midlands setting, then LFG Deluxe came after that.

A few questions if someone would be so kind as to answer them:
1) Does armor make you harder to hit or does it reduce damage?
2) How much of a bonus do shields give you?
3) Does it use Vancian magic?

The second question probably seems strange, but in my experience fantasy games consistently under-rate the importance of a shield.

Hi Patrick thanks for your questions. In response
1) Armour is standard AC (harder to hit)
2) Shields give +1 AC, but can also be sacrificed to negate a single directional attack (similar to the OSR "shields are splintered" rule)
3) It uses spell levels and slots, yes. But adds Dark & Dangerous Magic tests for arcane magic, and Divine Rebuke tests for divine magic. Magic is less predictable than standard dnd for example.

There's a free PDF of original LFG here which may assist: https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/231747/Low-Fantasy-Gaming-Original

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
