Fate Space Toolkit

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Take your game into the great unknown!

When you’re heading into the depths of outer space inside a tin can with a rocket strapped to one end, it’s critical to have the right instruction manual at your side. The Fate Space Toolkit is that manual, with advice and toolsets for Fate Core that run the gamut from hard science fiction to space opera and beyond.

The Fate Space Toolkit requires Fate Core to play. Inside you'll find:

  • Guidelines for creating a space-faring game without breaking your table's sense of what's plausible.
  • Multiple options for deciding how space-travel works in your setting, from star charts to rocket ships.
  • A variety of tools for making your space fights exciting and consistent with your setting.
  • Guidance on creating aliens and alien worlds.
  • Five ready-to-go campaign-starter settings showcasing all of the toolkit's tools in action.

Fate Toolkits.
All the tools to build your stage.

Hello, is it easy to do Star Trek with that ruleset ? And is Fate adapted to the Star Trek universe rulewise ?

Hello! Is this a full, final version (with art, etc.) or still a 'prototype edition'?
Thanks!

It's the full thing (which is why it's no longer labeled as a prototype). :)

Thanks! Is there any Brick&Mortar shop where one could buy a printed copy and get a complimentary pdf?

Plenty — the book was released just before the big shutdown, it's been stocked by multiple distributors.

Hello! Is it possible to get a version of the pdf that is formatted for screen readers (i.e. visual processing issues)?

I'm just now learning the ins & outs of that as we work on making a screen reader friendly Fate Accessibility Toolkit pdf. I can put this on my list. Please reach out to feedback@evilhat.com with this request as well, and when I get to work on it for Fate Space, I'll involve you in the testing.

Currently working on figuring out POD vs traditional printing. I may lean towards the latter; I've handled a couple black and white hardcovers from DriveThru's provider and vs. the quality we get out of traditional printing I don't feel it really stands up.

I don't believe so, but I don't remember if there were any minor corrections made. Certainly nothing major.

I may be an outlier here, but aside from a POD version, I'm actually more interested in PDFs of all the toolkits that are formatted for Kindle. The standard size pages are a bit big to read on Kindle (meaning everything displays a bit small), but the main problem I run into is that heavy graphics really slow down the poor, low-powered device. This "art-free" version might be more what I'm looking for than the finalized version would be.

Noted — maintaining multiple formats can be a pain tho and we do want to produce a final version of the PDF that fits the standards of our catalog (6"x9" page formats with evocative artwork).

That's a good point. I tend to forget that publishing, done well, is not a "set and forget" process. Any product that is released into the wild implies some responsibility on the part of the publisher to care for the life of the publication. And I definitely agree with those who have expressed an interest in a fully illustrated print version of this book. It would make a great addition to collection on my bookshelf (which my kids have started perusing as well).

It is not currently in open licensing at all. We don't have plans one way or another yet, at least during the prototype phase. Artwork first. Other decisions later.

Haven't fully decided yet. Very much a budget question, since yours boils down to "Will Evil Hat spend only the art budget, or will they spend many thousands of dollars more on this?"

Well for what it's worth if you do spend many thousands of dollars on this to send it to print it's pretty much a guarantied buy from me.

Very similar if not identical (I don't remember if there were any changes between then and now, but I suspect if there were they'd be minor). We heard so many folks who missed that KS talking about how they wished they'd backed so they could get a look, we decided to do this.

I'm skimming through this and there's a lot to like here:
- Ready to go setting toolkits for common/popular style Sci-Fi, from the likes of Star Trek, Bank's The Culture novels, The Expanse, and a 1970 inspired Afro vs Soviets. Although have to admit i'm not grokking the last one.
- Space movement and Combat is a-la-carte, pick from an array of options (based on sci-fi tropes: warp, wormholes, age of sail etc). Pick what makes sense for your setting

Suggestion:
Would have really like to see a procedural generator steps for collaborative world generation like the Fate based Diaspora Rpg where you can create a Cluster (/node) Map. A few extra instructions and a table of interesting quirks in the Node Map section p48 perhaps?

Conclusion: I think this is going to be one of the stand-out supplements for Fate Core. (and i have all the other ones)

I'd like to buy this in the same hardcover as the other Fate Core add-ons.
If there is no print-run, does anyone know if the print-on-demand is capable of reproducing the same book cover style? Or will it look very different?

That is fantastic news! Congratulations - and in approximately a week?! Amazing!

My impression from the KS preview was that this was one of the best Fate books I'd ever seen and I can't wait to put an illustrated version on my shelf!

I picked up the PDF, but I really hope you can make a physical print edition... the little FATE Core hardcovers are
some of the nicest books in my rpg collection. I hope this, Shadow of the Century, and Fate of Cthulhu are huge successes for you!

Picking this up is contingent on a few things so I need to know if they are addressed so here goes. 1. Is there a system for addressing races where as an example Trandoshans are stronger than Humans but Wookies are stronger than Trandoshans ie +0 Human, +1 Trandoshan, +2 Wookie, it's something I haven't seen addressed and I've struggled with how to do it in FATE

And 2 Are there Lightsaber/Laser Swords? :) Thanks

This isn't a Fate Science Fiction/Fantasy Toolkit (far too broad), it's a Fate Space Toolkit. The focus is primarily on space-faring setting building and covers some the tools needed for that. It does talk about the creation of alien worlds, species, and cultures, tho more at the big picture level rather than drilling down into the specifics of stats-implementation that are by nature going to vary from table to table.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
