Clifftop Keep

Pale stone comprises this defendable  keep, situated at the top of a steep cliff. Situated at the border  between two lands, after the abrupt death of its original inhabitants,  the keep’s ownership defaulted back to the kingdom. After hasty repairs,  it has since been repurposed as a tax station, and a place of safe rest  for merchants who can afford the protection of the guards.

Or so they think…

Adventure Seeds

People  have been going missing. When the guards see that your party are  adventurers, they offer that, instead of paying taxes, they will pay you  to solve the mystery. At first it was only the occasional merchant who  disappeared, but now their own have begun to vanish, too. Here are some  ideas:

  • Unbeknownst to many, the original inhabitants  were worshippers of demented gods, and used the cave under their house  as a place of sacrifice. When their dark ways were discovered, the King  killed them all for treason; repurposing the house, and doing his best  to clean it of its dark past. But it remains, in religious inscriptions  in the walls of the hidden crypt, and books of family histories—hastily  concealed within the sarcophagi of their ancestors. As testament to  their existence, too, an undead horror has awakened within the hidden  crypt; emerging to kill the strangers who trespass above, one by one...

  • The original inhabitants were cursed; each condemned to  eventually become a heinous and twisted ghoul. Their insatiable craving  for flesh grew and grew as each was drawn further away from their  humanity, and they eventually begun eating other humanoid creatures.  When the King found out, he slaughtered them all; purging the house of  their history. But the families curse lingers there still; corrupting  those who linger within its grasp too long.

  • The keep was  carved out of a prehistoric cave system, from the bottom up; eventually  resulting in the fortress above. What its founders didn’t know was that  they were building over an ancient site of unspeakable horrors, which  left the land stained with pain and suffering forever.   Evil lurks  here, and whispers to those who live within its reach the longest;  eventually driving them into madness. Demonic abominations are drawn to  the hidden crypt, sensing the darkness that hangs over the site—and  luring the disturbed humanoids down, to their doom below; where they  feast on their flesh…

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
