The Expanse Roleplaying Game

The Expanse Roleplaying Game brings James S.A. Corey’s award-winning series of science fiction novels to the tabletop. Using the Adventure Game Engine (AGE) rules that power Green Ronin’s Fantasy AGE, Blue Rose, and Modern AGE RPGs, The Expanse takes players to a far-future solar system where humanity is divided: Martians, Belters, and the people of old Earth struggle for political power and resources, but older, alien, forces are stirring in the universe, and human history is about to take an unexpected new turn.

The Expanse RPG applies the fast-playing, stunt-powered AGE system to spaceships, solar colonies, adventure, and intrigue in the far future, where the actions of the characters may change the course of history!

You may already know this but thought I’d share what I found out from the FB group for The Expanse RPG. Here’s a quote: “There really aren't any massive changes …. It was nearly all just typos (Bobbie was spelled Bobby in a few places), and some tweaks to the terminology that was leftover from it's origin as a Modern AGE base to make it more appropriate for the Expanse setting.”

Cool. I didn't know. Does a delta of the technical changes exist, not concerned about name/color text edits, but terminology would be nice to know what changed to what, as my players will be getting the PDF and at the table I usually use the book. I'd like to redline my print copy (less use of actual red ink and instead I use post-its as is my typical redline tool of choice.) The devil is in the details eh.

So I guess my question boils down to "Is there an errata published for the print version yet?"

Thanks!

I've written a lengthy review for this game (published here); there is much that I like but these are my main issues:

1. It suffers from the cut-and-paste syndrome. Chunks of other AGE games are transplanted with just a light edit.
2. The setting is something tacked on to Modern Age, the story of the protomolicule is spread over several sections like an Easter egg hung. I feel like reading the books is essential preparation for the game - I've read them and loved them but I'd like to see a new player able to pick up the game without pre-reading homework.
3. You're given three suggested ways to play, one of which is, "ignore the protomolicule". Hmmm...and I'm playing this game why?
4. No distinction between skill complexity. A good sense of smell and the ability to build a space ship carry the same weight in the game system. One skill for conducting an incredibly complex task and five skills for the human senses. The character's basic senses should not be skills at all....See more

I get all the other points and am thankful for the review, but is the protomolicule really the main drive for you in this setting like really?

Well, it is in the first 3 books. But for me it would be more lore than player facing.

Actually i WANT to ignore the protomolecule in that I want near future Sol system only tech and economics. Does it detail the different colonies and what they produce import/export enough for that?

Nope. Economics in this game is absolutely trash.

I'd be happy if they got the flavour of the locations, the factions, and spaceship interactions. With that, I could tell a LOT of stories while ignoring the protomolecule.

I feel like people will want to include the protomolecule, but lots else is happening in the system so it need not be the whole shebang as far as plotlines, adventures.

I felt with the Firefly/Serenity RPG that I would have trouble providing the sort of interesting 'non Serenity crew' games which one would need to play outside what was in the series & movie.

I don't get the same feeling with the Expanse universe. I loved Firefly and the Expanse, but I think doing interesting things in Expanse outside of the known arc of story than in Firefly (at least for me).

Seriously great version of the AGE system. And a lot less crunch.

I was never impressed with Fantasy Age or Modern Age. They seem too generic. But I bought the hardcover of The Expanse and it is very impressive.

It's just a pity that there isn't more background.

Probably because the property owners would prefer to have the original writers to write more if they were going to rather than someone writing up an RPG filling stuff in. (a guess)

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
