ADD TO WISHLIST >

The World Needs Heroes - Right Now!

Welcome to the FREE Quickstart Rules for Prowlers & Paragons Ultimate Editionthe next-generation superhero RPG you've been waiting for!

Roll a handful of six-siders, count the evens (6s count double!), and describe a comic panel or cinematic moment that puts your friends in the scene.

Evolved from 2013's beloved Prowlers & Paragons game (found on several Top Ten lists of supers games), Prowlers & Paragons Ultimate Edition is Len Pimentel's (Hughesville High, TNT, Six-Gun Fury) masterwork, with extensive design support from Sean Patrick Fannon (Freedom Squadron, Savage Rifts, High Tech Enemies, The Mutant File). The two of them love superhero gaming, and you will love what they've done with this system.

P&PUE features:

  • Easy, intuitive game mechanics with just enough crunch to be truly fun to play!

  • Player-empowering narrative and shared descriptive experiences reflecting the best of 21st Century game design!

  • Fast and fun, character creation allows any concept you can imagine, any power set you might wish to play with.

"P&P is a smashing amount of superheroic fun that I've enjoyed playing. And did I mention fistfuls of dice? If you like a game that's fast-moving and gives you the feel of your favorite comic-book heroes, P&P delivers. " - Steve Peterson, co-designer of Champions

These Quickstart rules feature complete rules, ready-to-play, including an adventure and pre-generated heroes so you can see just how great this game is. Our Kickstarter launches March 19th, 2019, so we hope you'll join us for that!

Love the system. That said, there's a typo on page 2, where the word year is used twice.
"...we spent the last five [year] years revising, expanding, and playtesting."

Hi, I had a question about active and passive defense.

If a player with 10d Armor doesn't roll his active defense and instead just relies on his passive defense does that mean that attackers need to beat a threshold of 5?

You always get to roll you BEST applicable defense; it's assumed you generally try not to be hit, and that your Armor is doing its best to protect you from damage. That's one idea to make sure you keep in mind.

If a character's best defense is 10d Armor, attacks have to be Rank 6d or higher to even have a chance to hurt him; otherwise, he can totally "Superman" the bullets off his chest, without rolling.

Otherwise, he needs to either roll or declare auto-successes. If he does the latter, every success over 5 the attack scores does one Health of damage.

Does that help?

oh okay, so is Passive Defense basically half of your Active Defense? Does this apply to powers like forcefield too?

Apologies, Marco, for not quite getting it across.

Passive and Active defenses aren't really connected at all.

Your Active defense defaults to your Agility, but can be enhanced by all kinds of powers (Evasion, Super Speed, having Block and/or Melee as a Pro on your Blast, and so on).

Your Passive defense defaults to your Toughness (though you only get half of that against most Power attacks and lethal weaponry). Armor tends to be the most common Passive defense for heroes, though Force Field is another option.

Ah gotcha. And here I was thinking that Passive Defense is half of what your best active defense is. Thanks for clearing it up!

What are the main differences in the Ultimate and old version?
I noticed they changed how rolling 6s is handled but the rest seems more or less the same?

Actually, there's a pretty huge amount of updating in Ultimate Edition. Yes, dice rolling, but the character creation rules are vastly expanded and improved, and the game is much more complete in terms of handling All the Things you'd want to do with superheroing.

That's the quick answer; drop me a line at spf@evilbeaglegames.com and I can get into a more thorough recounting there.

I'm not exactly well-versed on the rules. I've looked through the quickstart stuff for both and I've listened to a few podcasts, the system seems perfect for my group! I'm mulling over starting with the original or waiting for the ultimate edition to drop!

I'd like to also recommend checking out the live play videos we've started posting (our "Handfuls of Dice" show).

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
