Empty Ruins

Beautiful ruins, long abandoned by the dwarves who originally built  the underground structure. A river flows through their lowest floor,  feeding a lush courtyard presided over by a towering statue.

Above,  sunlight graces crumbling ruins, covered with moss and worn away by the  passage of time. A thin shaft of light, warm and radiant, falls down  through the gap in the earth; nurturing the fern trees which stand tall  in the central courtyard far, far below.

Adventure Seeds

  • Local villagers have paid you to  recover the body of a missing child. He fell into the local excavation  site while playing, and no-one has been able to bring his body back for  burial. It is dangerous, and filled with horrible spectres—spectres  which sigh at night, or call long, echoing screams across the  countryside. But when you enter, you find the child alive and well. He  has been possessed, and demands of the villagers that they return the  bones and sarcophagi which were stolen during the excavation, and the  boy will be returned alive—for the spirits of those once entombed within  now roam restless, furious that their burial grounds have been defiled…   since, and if they  aren’t helped, they will die from the coma—but anyone who breathes the  mist for too long, receives the same fate. He and the other survivors  will pay you handsomely for the rescue.

  • An old man, who is the last of a secret order worshiping an  ancient god, seeks to reclaim the ancient ruins, so he can make a wish  at the Well of Wishes. It has been hundreds of years since anyone last  undertook the series of mental trials required to access the well, and  he is worried that dangerous creatures might have come to inhabit the  empty ruins in the meantime; making the already challenging task  possibly deadly.

  • You encounter an  injured old man on the road. He was attacked while trying to find a way  in to a hidden temple filled with cultists—cultists who have kidnapped  children from the local village, one of which was his grandchild, who he  was trying to save.   He begs your party to go in and rescue the  children for him, as he no longer can. He offers to tell you the  location of hidden treasure if you do, and gives you a map showing the  main entrance to the ruins.

Inside the temple, the cultists are  really a group of people who have been living for several generations in  isolation, as a hidden, underground community with their children.  While this change initially happened to avoid bandits (and taxes), the  village has since developed strange—but mostly harmless—practices, due  to the obscurity of their existence.   In reality, the old man is a  wizard, who killed two of their guardsmen before retreating. As a result  of this, if anyone tries to enter the isolationists will be inclined to  attack, assuming they are somehow connected to the man who attacked  them—after all, few others know of their location, and it has been years  since they had visitors.

The wizard wants to gain  access to the bottom of the temple, where great treasure is stored as  part of the sacrifices once given to the forgotten god.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
