Winter's Daughter

ADD TO WISHLIST >

The tomb of an ancient hero, lost in the tangled depths of the woods. A ring of standing stones, guarded by the sinister Drune cult. A fairy princess who watches with ageless patience from beyond the veil of the mortal. A forgotten treasure that holds the key to her heart.

Winter's Daughter is a romantic fairy-tale dungeon adventure set in the creepy old forest of Dolmenwood.

  • Suitable for characters of 1st to 3rd level.
  • Encompasses woodland, tomb, and fairy otherworld—all in one handy package!
  • Keyed in a quick-reference, bullet point format.
  • Statted for Old-School Essentials (B/X), usable with any vintage adventure game.
  • Unlabelled map included for VTT use.
Awards and nominations for Winter's Daughter:
Print version: A deluxe, sewn-binding hardcover edition of this book (+ free PDF) is available from Exalted Funeral, along with all of the other books in the Old-School Essentials line. Note that there is no print-on-demand edition of this book.

I bought the adventure last night and I really like what I have read so far – very tight, easy-do-understand story, yet with depth and everything clearly presented.

However, my map doesn't have any numbers on it. And I don't have an easy time figuring out where things are located on the map without a number key corresponding to the text entries.

Can I get a numbered map? Obviously the one without numbers is really helpful for VTT and whatnot, but still.

Hi Tom, the numbered maps are at the end of the PDF.

Does this version have the ritual sacrifice at the begining? The preview does not show it.

That initial encounter was replaced because it didn't fit with the tone of the rest of the adventure and tended to cause TPKs right at the beginning. You can see the old version here: https://necroticgnome.com/blogs/news/winters-daughter

I just downloaded and read Winter's Daughter. I love it and can't wait for the Dolmenwood books to come out. It seems I have v3_1 of Winter's Daughter and that the opening scene at the Whything Stones with the Drune has been changed from what I have read about in reviews. Is it possible to get a copy of the original?

Glad you're enjoying the adventure! As lots of people ask about the revision, I just wrote a blog post about it, including both the original and revised versions of encounter area 2: https://necroticgnome.com/blogs/news/winters-daughter

Looks great. Is the 5e version compatible with Five Torches Deep rules set?

Will there be 5e and osc versions of the three upcoming Dolmenwood books (players, campaign, bestiary)

I'm afraid I've not looked at Five Torches Deep, so can't advise on how well it'd work with the 5e version of Winter's Daughter.

There may be 5e versions of the Dolmenwood hardcover books at some point in the future, but it's not something that's currently being planned or worked on.

I bought the print version off their site, so I can't leave a review, but I just ran this with Beyond the Wall and we had a blast. It required very little tweaking it to run it with that game.

Planning on running this one for a group of smaller kids as their first look at an rpg. The fairy tale atmosphere is pretty perfect for that kinda stuff.

(I am gonna excise the human sacrifice. They're 8 year olds and it's a church function)

Wonderful! Yeah, I can understand dropping the first encounter, under those circumstances ;)

It's all good. Wrote a group of vaguely breakfast club inspired goblins who are arguing about wedding invitations, namely where they buried theirs

Please add a preview that isn't just an unlabeled map. You guys do great work but a new customer isn't going to purchase anything based on a preview like that.

Thanks for pointing that out! It's a technical error. We're trying to fix it.

I can't review this because I got it through the Necrotic Gnome site, but I really like this and look forward to running it. I found the layout and information design very readable.

I would love to buy this, but the $9.43 shipping is a bit much for a single $16.63 book.

Hopefully a print on demand paperback will appear at some point.

There are no plans for a print-on-demand version. If you're in the US, maybe try checking some retailers. I know that Exalted Funeral, for example, often has copies for sale. The shipping might be cheaper.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
