Robotech: The Macross Saga

Roleplaying Game

An alien menace descends upon the SDF-1 in droves. You, your friends, and the might of Robotechnology are the only things that stand between them and seventy thousand innocent civilians. Do not expect to make it home. Do not expect to see your friends again. Do whatever it takes to ensure humanity’s future.

Welcome to Robotech.

Download a redacted rulebook on the product page - it has all the mechanical rules needed to play along with the GM section.

As the cockpit of your VF-1A slowly closes, you hear a small hiss of the compartment pressurizing. The elevator slowly raises. At first all you see is the void of deep space. Then, you see the flight deck. Ahead of you a large swarm of Zentraedi Pods races toward your home. Luckily, you have friends. They will watch your back, or at least, console your love if you don’t make it home. Now is your time to do you job. You have a two protoculture driven engines, 200 rounds of exploding ammo, and three transformable modes.

Play as an iconic Robotech Hero, or build your own. Choose from the following careers:

  • Pilot: Take control of your very own Veritech fighter. Or play as the Zentraedi and take on the RDF!
  • Entertainer: Do what you do best – keep people happy and confuse the enemy as you dazzle onstage.
  • Spy: No one knows your real name or your real purposes. Are you helping your friends, or just using them?
  • Marine: Pilots get the glory, but ground pounders have all the fun. Hey marines have Destroids too!
  • Technician: Play as a scientist, doctor, or mechanic. Solve the problems that no one else can solve.
  • Officer: Control your very own Naval Vessel, or help command the SDF-1.
  • Volunteer: You have chosen a cause, and wish to help. What does a civilian like you bring to the table?

The Robotech: Macross Saga RPG is 264 pages of amazing full color art goodness. Fans of Robotech will not be disappointed. Along with the rules, is a 50 page Scenario section that outlines the entire Robotech: Macross Saga. Take action along with your favorite heroes or villains, or play as them. The unique system allows for personal level, mecha level, and naval level action. Take on conflicts and drama to secure your future and get the SDF-1 home. Every turn, with every action, you have something interesting to do.

The game is played based around a conflict system that invloves all types of characters, from Valkyrie Pilots to Entertainers. Take actions by making combos of skills from a comprehensive list. Each turn is broken into action phases:

  • Support
  • Operations
  • Cinematic

As you interact with the conflicts, you will acrrue drama and fatigue, which allows you to choose how you interact with the story. The game is 1 part PBTA, 1 part Forged, and 1 part Old School. Every action taken, has the potential to impact the world around you.

Along with the amazing art and scenarios are short stories about the Robotech Universe. Immerse yourself in the fiction.

I was wondering if someone could help me with a question regarding wounds. On page 163 Under Wounds it states: " When the last critical wound is lost, you take penalties to all of your Skill rolls." But I can't seem to find what the penalties are. Am I missing something somewhere? Can. anyone point me to where the penalties are listed for the Critical Wounds?

Asked the same question on SMGs discord and got a rapid response so I'll post it here if anyone else has the same question: "That it's as the fiction dictates or as the GM requires. Or, if using the High Lethal Rules, then it's disadvantage." SMG_Jeff was very helpful and its much appreciated. Looking forward to picking up Homefront!

From the PDF for Version 1.1:

Page 160, under "Attacking", reads:
"(...) For information about Damage Cascades, see page 129."
Page 129 is "Zentraedi Naval Vessels". Damage Cascades are actually on page 161.

Page 170, under "Swarm Encounters", reads:
"(...) Below are lists of the typical number of enemies encountered. Each entry also lists a minimum Conflict level. (...)"
No such Conflict level is actually given in the list though, only the enemy numbers.

I just purchased a physical copy via SMG's website and received a download link for the pdf. Is there any way to integrate that into my DTRPG library via a code or something?

Wait, is this legit? I thought another gaming company had the licensees to do a Robotech RPG using the Savage World rules. Is there more than one license for this game? If so will there be books for the Southern Cross and Invid books too? How different is this one from the Savage Worlds book?

Robotech, the Macross Saga. I waited a week or two to put this review out. To be honest I really wanted to be critical and rough on this one. This is a hard franchise filled with a 30+ years of copyright history and scary “is it going to last lawsuits”. Palladium held this licensing for many years with tons of drama. But this review is not about that. You can read that history elsewhere. First off, I was a huge follower of the Palladium system for many years. I just so happened to be surfing the web about this oldy but goody and saw that Strange Machine picked up the mantle. My first experience with this company (Jeff Specifically) was frankly, AWESOME. I messed up my order and guess what, my wife and I got a human being (Jeff) almost immediately to fix the problem. My second experience was through discord. I was very skeptical of the game mechanics. Being an avid gamer for 35+ years and loving crunch I got lucky and met a couple youtubers “Grubey and Junko” who immediately got us into a one-shot on Roll...See more

If you're still wondering, go to Strange Machine Games' website and check out their community dropdown. They have a link to their Discord where you can find others who actively play the game. We received the pdf here and asked if someone was willing to run a one-shot for us on Discord. We were able to play the same day through Roll20 with an amazing GM.

So, I think it's really cool that one of the creators of this new Robotech RPG is active in answering questions on here. Shows their willingness to help with any confusion. To be honest, from what I read in the first dozen or so pages of the redacted PDF for this new game it is a far different experience than the Palladium one. However, the Palladium one wasn't without flaws and they were far too many to be counted herein. What I will say is that I'm curious to read more and see if this is something worth throwing any money down on. It's incredibly hard to find players for Robotech these days and one has to go to www.roll20.net to actually find players. I've mentioned this version and the Savage Worlds one to the game group I play with on there. We're using the first edition Robotech rules and it's obvious the rules are incredibly dated. In fact, we tried to do the Lancer's Rockers module with the music angle and half of the group were for it and the other half against. I think the Palladium system just lent itself...See more

If you purchase this PDF you'll get a copy of the Southern Cross and Invid Invasion test materials. They are apparently next on the list to come out.

A beautiful full color book with some deep cuts for mecha, vehicles and ships that have never seen print in an official Robotech RPG before. A great addition for any hardcore Robotech fan.

I actually ran a game with this system a horror game set in the robotech universe. It was really intense, and by the end of it the players (all first time players) had a base understanding of the system and really started using the different aspects of the core mechanics in very creative ways.

Are there any plans to develop sourcebooks for the other parts of the Robotech series? Southern Cross and Invid Invasion? Thanks for working on this and looking forward to taking a look at the redacted preview!

I wrote a separate message in this thread, but didn't catch that you had already begun to address this concern.

My principle question from that message was: when are you going to release the Southern Cross/Masters sourcebook?

I guess from the sounds of it you're doing both the Masters and the New Generation Sagas in one book. I sure hope you don't skimp on the Southern Cross. I'm going to hold off on any purchase until I've seen this next sourcebook. If it's apparent no real through was put into the Southern Cross or it was a half-hearted attempt, I'll just return to the Palladium version of the game world. Though, they did no better for Southern Cross, frankly. The second edition of the Masters sourcebook was an immense improvement over the first, but I just had lost all interest by that point. I basically want to try something new, but with the same story. Also, please create statistics for ALL of the Southern Cross characters. That would include the following: Dana, Bowie, Angelo,...See more

So... this is actually different than Robotech: A Macross Saga RPG (https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/273522/Robotech-A-Macross-Saga-RPG-SWAdE) I thought Battlefield Press was working with you on the game, so I'm really confused at this point.

What you are referring to is the Savage Worlds version. We published two versions of the book do players could have two experiences. We didn't anticipate the confusion from so many. Rules light SW versions are not a new thing. This Robotech product is a complete standalone game using a new system. Choose what you prefer more.

If you are not familiar with SW, you'll need to purchase the Core Adventure book as well as the Robotech SW supplement book. The core book gives you the basic game rules and the supplement modifies those rules and adds specific flavor.

I understand needing SWADE for the SW version, and already have that. I just didn't understand where this fit in with that particular version. Will you continue to support the SW version? And thanks for the answer.

One stupid question from a Macross fan (who is not a Robotech fan): Will this book include a chapter exlaining the differences between the japanese original and the american version?

We didn't do that. We know that Macross fans are avid and vocal, but we created a product with Robotech information. That said, we watched Macross and took the roleplaying concepts an inserted them into the book. We tried to provide Macross fans a macross experience, however we didn't create a disparate ruleset for the Macross universe.

Too bad, but atleast this book is Macross Saga only, so it should still be usable for a pure Macross campaign. You only have to change some names, the nature of proticulture and the fate of the Macross.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
