The Nocturnal Table

ADD TO WISHLIST >

“The City is a maze. A labyrinth of alleyways, plazas, shortcuts and hidden thoroughfares, it isn’t any less treacherous to navigate than a dungeon. At least during the day, the worst one can expect is a greedy patrol of guards eager for a shakedown, or a thief in the crowd, ready to make a grab and run for it. At night, the sensible and the timid hurry home and bolt their doors. Ecstatic revellers, madmen, assassins, religious fanatics, thrill-seekers, enigmatic apparitions and tiger-headed opium nightmares prowl the streets. And the guards are still not helping. The Nocturnal Table is a supplement intended to bring you this city by way of an encounter system, random inspiration tables, NPC and monster statistics, as well as a giant nighttime random encounter table, whose three hundred entries can serve as interludes as well as springboards for complicated investigative scenarios and fantastic conspiracies.”

The Nocturnal Table is a 60-page game aid dedicated to city-based adventures, lavishly illustrated by Matthew Ray (cover), Peter Mullen, Stefan Poag and Denis McCarthy. This is a game aid designed for regular table use, and formatted to be comfortable and accessible, offering a handy guide to design and run adventure scenarios in a large, sinful city filled with action and intrigue.

At the core of The Nocturnal Table is a 300-entry table of random encounters and odd events you can run into at night in a busy fantasy metropolis. From a patrol of guards carrying a slain comrade, to a sinister beggar-catcher soliciting the aid of dishonest adventurers, or a skeleton covered in grey ooze, its eyes glittering gemstones shambling towards the party, all the wonder and menace of a city-crawl are at hand. But that is not all. With The Nocturnal Table, you can…

  • create general encounters with the aid of a comprehensive encounter system…
  • generate merchants selling strange and fantastic goods (as seen in Echoes From Fomalhaut #01)…
  • find out what’s in their pockets…
  • generate local colour on the fly…
  • stock warehouses with exotic goods to plunder…
  • and set up secret meetings and investigation sites!

Guidelines are also offered to re-use the encounters and chart contents for the construction of bizarre plotlines and sinister conspiracies which rule from the shadows… while the City sleeps. All that, and more are at your disposal in… The Nocturnal Table!

On the table Bazaar of the Bizarre, what does the 1d2 next to nature and complication mean? Am I supposed to roll twice?

Sellers are supposed to have one or two of these specific traits each. E.g.:
"A gaunt pirate selling a kingdom title on the run, but they are adultered."
"A smiling, corrupt peddler selling documents to facilitate arrest (member of tax authorities)."
"A devious, hungry prophet selling heresies, while recruiting for cult."

I would very much like to buy this, but I note that it's watermarked. I'm old school and cannot work from a computer screen, I need to have printed material in front of me to reference. Is there any way to get a non-watermarked version that I can print on my LaserJet?

OK, I don't say this lightly. I was, BitD, a huge fan of Chaosium's, Thieves World, boxed set (& still am), but, The Nocturnal Table, is in every way possible, the product which replaces the TW tables for this sort of urban exploration/adventuring.

The utility factor is far beyond 100%, and any given table in this product could be used not only for the seedy, decadent, exotic trade city of a fantasy sort, but could very easily be extrapolated with minimal effort to serve for any other large (or small) urban population centre, regardless of genre. The Nocturnal Table would flesh out Cairo for a Call of Cthulhu game of, Masks of Nyarlathotep, or fill in details for a Zhodani fringe world in the Traveller rpgs.

As a fellow DriveThruRPG indie publisher, I can't leave product reviews, so I wanted to leave a discussion comment instead to state that I'm quite happy to have picked this up as the Deal of the Day. Lots and lots of random tables, galore. Sometimes, a book promising lots of tables turns out to be underwhelming. Not this one; the tables are fun and inspiring to read, and little story seeds or adventure hooks began drilling into my brain just in my first flip-through. Late in the book comes a fun, quick guide to using this book to make urban conspiracies; this part reminded me, actually, of the urban Transmissions from the game Technoir - only here, with even more power due to all the random tables present! Very nicely done. Thanks!

Much appreciated! The conspiracy rules are parallel evolution (the original Hungarian version of this supplement predates Technoir), but they draw on similar ideas and obsessions. Technoir is probably my favourite new game from the last decade; it is very close to my heart, and has been very inspiring for my own urban conspiracies. I even wrote a super-bleak urban transmission for it in 2015, which proved scarily prescient.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
