ADD TO WISHLIST >

The hunched beast prowls the forest, sniffing at the still air. The roiling sky flashes and thunder breaks ther silence. The time is near and the beast senses it. The monstrous form bounds toward the darkened village, a demonic howl in its throat...

Shipwrecked on a perilous shore, a group of adventurers cross into a blighted land and confront a deadly and cursed apparition. Can you unravel the mystery and solve the Barghest's curse before it devours your soul?

The Howling Caverns is a 56-page, black and white adventure for D&D 5th Edition, with a setting inspired by gothic horror and English folklore. Set in the world of Boroz, an accursed and mist-shrouded land filled with dangerous creatures and eldritch influence.

The Howling Caverns Includes:

  • Introductory adventure intended for 3-5 1st level characters, with an approximate play time of 6-8 hours.
  • 11 overland locations and 10 dungeon rooms filled with dangerous mysteries.
  • 6 horrifying new monsters, from the dim-witted wereowl to the craft gharblest.

Illustrated throughout with evocative black and white line-art. Printed in black and white with colour covers.

What Others Have Said

"...well done with decent interactivity and good writing and layout. It builds tension... Impressive effort for a first offering and can easily trump a lot of WOTC/Paizo offerings."

— Bryce Lynch, tenfootpole.org

"I ran this as a first-time GM and it was great! Some inventive uses of monsters from the Monster Manual as well as some unique ones. This adventure was a great introduction to being a GM for me and a good introduction to tabletop gaming for the players!"

— Isaac the Wise, Amazon reviewer

Also available:

The adventure continues with Colossus Wake, the second book in the Eldritch Mists campaign.

Is this a 1+ player plus DM, or can this be soloed?

The adventure was designed with a party in mind (3-5 1st level characters); theoretically it could be modified to play solo but there are no solo-specific rules or considerations. One dungeon section needs more than 1 person but this can be modified

I had an absolute blast playing this adventure. It took our party of four a couple of four hour sessions to complete and would serve as a great intro to a larger campaign, if desired. I have since bought the pdf and the artwork and layout is great. If I hadn't already played through this with my usual group I'd definitely consider running it as a first game as GM as the module is really well written and laid out. If you're unsure make sure to give the tenfootpole review a read.

Would this be appropriate to run for a group that has never played D&D before? I would like to find something that gets them involved in the action early and is challenging for new players, but isn't likely to result in a TPK early on (or at all).

The adventure is balanced for 1st level characters and is friendly to new players. There's an initial combat scene at the beginning and then it eases into exploration and roleplaying. There's an encounter that's a significant risk to the party in the dungeon, but this is clearly signposted.

In my (biased) opinion, this will be fine for a fresh group.

Bryce Lynch has just published a review for my module and he gives you a good idea of what to expect:

If Bryce says it's good, you can take that to the bank. He's notoriously critical (and rightly so!) of many adventures. Based on his review, I'll be purchasing this.

Glad to hear! I wrote it using a lot of his usability and readability criteria. Please let me know what you think with a review.

I was part of the playtesting for this, it was a great intro to a larger story and the many different locations allowed the whole group to use the breadrh of their abilities rather than bash their way through every encounter.
The clean simplicity of the adventure allowed 5ed newbies and more experienced players to enjoy it equally, making it a great opener for a new group. I'm not saying it's a shallow plot or overly simple, you'll likely come a cropper if you're not paying attention!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
