Black Spear

Welcome to Black Spear, dangerous adventure in an enigmatic, ancient world.  Black Spear has taken the core of Openquest, pared it down for the sake of simplicity, and added modern table-top gaming philosophy to create compelling, snappy updates to the D100 system suitable for the intended themes of the game.

Black Spear aspires to accomplish rapid, deadly combat, compelling roleplay, and an overall free and simple manner of play using underutilized themes and set-pieces.  It identifies as seeking to hold up the OSR way of things.  The world is young, mysterious, with the unknown lying just beyond the pastures.  Times are changing- can the people of the Marchlands survive these dark times?

Open Gaming

Black Spear was written using Openquest as a base, and while it is no longer quite Openquest, it does use pieces of it.  Even if it did not, Black Spear would be released under the Open Gaming License all the same- free and open to add, remix, and modify and to create anything you like for essentially any purpose, subject to the original OGL included at the end.

Please pay attention to the Print+PDF pricing, which should be the same as just the print pricing.  If you purchase this item in print and omit purchasing the PDF but want it, or if for some reason the pricing for the Print/PDF combo appears more expensive, please contact us at sadfishegames@gmail.  We will ensure you get your PDF.

Hello, reading from the sample the Characteristics are first presented in a 1-100 scale with for example SIZE 30 being the minimum score for a human, then we are instructed to create them on a 3-18 scale, and also all the creatures are in a 3-18 scale. I'm right in understanding that the 1-100 scale reference is typo from an older draft?

Hi, I'm interested in getting this, but I'd like to ask what has been changed from Openquest, as no clear answer was given in the description.
Regards, Dan

Hey Dan,

Openquest served as a basic foundation, both mechanically and thematically, but the end product diverges quite a bit. The precise changes are too various to comprehensively describe, but some major ones are as follows:

Rather than HP, the system uses a Damage Threshold and Damage Track system, and a similar system for dealing with mental and physical endurance. Additionally, combat has an Action Point based turn and move system, with various Actions and Reactions that require differing amounts of AP to use. Both these changes requires significant revision of Weapons and Armor, with a Magic and Ritual system along side that borrows many Openquest spells but has other new ones. Notably, this predates Openquest's 3rd Edition, and borrowed only from the 2nd Edition.

The entire game is in the full-size preview now. Additionally, you can use this link to get it for free: https://www.drivethrurpg.com/browse.php?discount=9c40d30f44

It should work indefinitely....See more

Is it a Conan-style sword & sorcery or is it more bronze age a la Glorantha?

Diego, I would suggest the intent was more bronze age, with the inspiration you reference. I'll admit that as further development and creation of supplementary materials has gone on, I've tilted a bit toward sword and sorcery, though I think it would be dishonest and a bit boastful to say that it is quite sword and sorcery.

I've got a question. The product description mentions a print + PDF option, but I can only see a PDF price. Is this still to come or has it been abandoned. I'm old fashioned - I do like a hard copy.

Hi there,

We very recently updated the PoD files to fix some errata. On DTRPG this requires taking down the PoD option until we can get our new proof copy, but it will return! If you'd like, shoot us an email at sadfishegames@gmail.com, and we can flag it and shoot you a notice and discount link once its back up and running.

Boths previews show pages from the adventure 'The Old Road' - could you please add a preview for the rulebook, too?

Matthias,

Thank you for letting us know. We were updating the file to fix some errata last night and DTRPG was fighting with us a bit. I thought I had resolved the issue, but apparently not! I just tested the files after some reuploads and it seems to be working now. Please do let me know if any issues persist and I will elevate this with DTRPG Support.

Feel free to email us as sadfishegames@gmail.com and I'll send some digital swag your way.

I know my response to extremely delayed in fixing that problem, but we are working on a new and vastly superior sheet now. We were updating the files so frequently that we must have made an error in the upload. My apologies, and thank you for taking a look at the game.

Any Gloranhtan influence in the setting?

Diego, somehow we missed your comment. Yes, this is certainly glorantha inspired in many ways. King of Dragon Pass had a profound effect on me when I first played it years ago. It is hard to express why, but it captured something that has been hard to emulate. This represents, in part, an effort for me to recreate that at the table for myself and my players.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
