Shoot 'n' Loot

ADD TO WISHLIST >

It’s a tough, unforgiving, dangerous galaxy. Out there on the fringes of solar systems controlled by interstellar ultra-capitalist corporations, where pirates and bandits and marauders roam, mercenaries make a living taking dangerous jobs for not enough pay, hoping to scrape enough together to buy a better gun that could be the difference between success and bloody, painful failure. And if they die, the ubiquitous corporate respawn industry spits them out in a new body, for as long as it’s profitable.

You are one of these bombastic, gun-toting, problem-solving, explosion-loving, daredevil-driving mercenaries, out to make a name for yourself blowing away bad guys for fun and profit. You do what the mission demands, and look good while doing it.

Let’s make some mayhem.

---

Shoot 'n' Loot is a rules-lite tabletop roleplaying game for 2-5 players, including a GM. It is built in the easy-to-learn, fiction-first style of games like Apocalypse World (D. Vincent Baker and Meguey Baker), Dungeon World (Sage LaTorra and Adam Koebel), and The Sprawl (Hamish Cameron). It uses a unique map-drawing approach to fast-paced, lightly tactical combat. It contains everything you need to jump straight into a setting-agnostic high octane world of explosions, bullets, and mayhem.

What's Familiar

Shoot 'n' Loot is Powered by the Apocalypse. It uses a roll of 2d6 +/- a skill to resolve challenges, and each move has built in, fiction-focused prompts for failed rolls, partial successes, and complete successes. Each character has a Playbook which gives them access to moves unique to them. As you level up through completing missions, failing rolls, and complicating missions through personal drives, you choose new moves to expand your character's options.

What's Unique

Shoot 'n' Loot uses a new map-drawing approach to fiction-first tactical combat. It's not grid-based combat, nor is it purely theatre-of-the-mind. Combat is fast and dangerous, but don't worry: when your character dies, they'll just come back at a nearby respawn station... to a point.

Characters wield an array of wild, randomly generated guns across 10 weapon types with 100 possible tags, and 100 possible looks. Some tags give concrete bonuses or penalties while some are part of the fiction.

Playbooks

  • The Soldier protects themselves and their allies, making them harder to take down, and takes out vulnerable targets with grenades.
  • The Berserker gets in close and deals massive damage at huge risk to themselves.
  • The Agent ghosts unnoticed around the battlefield, picking off isolated targets with decisive blows.
  • The Wheel-Jockey is one with the machine, making rust-bucket cars dance across wastelands and through city streets.
  • The Gun Runner makes their fortune in the machinery of endless strife, and always knows how to cut a deal.
  • The Sentry watches the battle from afar, waiting for the perfect time to strike.

What's Included

Your download of Shoot 'n' Loot includes a full rulebook, rules for combat and weapon generation, and 6 playbooks.

You will need dice, paper, pens or drawing items, tokens for characters, tokens or diecast cars for vehicles.

Setting Agnostic

Shoot 'n' Loot does not include any setting information, worldbuilding, or fiction. You can play games of Shoot 'n' Loot in any science fiction or cyberpunk setting that allows mercenaries to operate with total or partial impunity, features unimaginably large and powerful capitalist corporations, and has the kind of technology required to bring people back from the dead for profit. You can develop your own setting as you play, or port Shoot 'n' Loot into an existing world.

Is there any place where "unique map-drawing approach" is expanded upon, like a blog? Because that could make it a must-buy for me. And I'm curious as to the diversity of generated weapons; how many of these 21 pages go to that? Mitchell, would you please cherry-pick two generated weapons to illustrate your system's breadth?

Thanks for your questions, Alexander! Basically the map drawing comes down to drawing features on the fly as you play out combat encounters. Rather than the GM laying out all the detail on a grid map when combat starts, all the players add a bit of information to the map such as obstacles, cover, and vehicles, then continue to add cover and features to the map through play. It's nothing mind-blowingly clever, just a way to make map- and cover-based gameplay quick and free-flowing, and not just limited to the picture the GM might have in their head.

In regards to weapons, 5 pages of the book are weapon generation tables: Roll 1d10 to determine weapon type, 1d10 to determine it's max ammo, 1d100 up to four times to determine up to 4 tags, and 1d100 to determine a look.

So you might roll up an Extravagant (look) Assault Rifle (type) with 6 Ammo with the tags Goop (sticks targets in place), Silent (makes no noise), Tracer Rounds (makes it easier to hit your target), and Melancholy (the weapon...See more

This looks cool but the price is a bit steep for 21 pages.

Thanks for the feedback, Christopher, that's really helpful to know as I try and feel out price points for different styles of game. I'll keep your feedback in mind for future titles.

I bought it anyway. It's good, though, so money well-spent. I say that as someone who does this for a living.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
