This is a collection of 100 different wilderness locations that can be dropped into a setting to enliven a journey. The locations are of many different types, from mountains to oceans, from large plains to small locations. Each location has been named and is described, and many could have potential adventure and encounter hooks as well.

All the locations are in intended to be in tropical regions, with flora and flora appropriately suited to the climate.

This PDF supports Adobe layers and the page backgrounds and images can be disabled to make printing easier.

  • Foreland of the Betrayer: A long, triangular finger of sandy terrain that sticks out into the ocean, it is home to only a few plants that help bind the sand together and various species of crustacean. Long ago, a revolt was staged with the leader, the Betrayer, the head of the royal guard, intending to put themselves on the country's throne. Most of the royal family was killed, but enough survived to raise an army in return, and the Betrayer's army was driven back to this point, where they were all forced into the sea and were presumed to have drowned.
  • Frescoed Dune Lands: An extensive patch of wilderness with little rainfall and only the hardiest of flora and fauna surviving. Some of the wilderness is rocky but many parts of it are covered with sand dunes, which shift as the prevailing winds alter their formations. The rocks and sands come in a range of colours and, from above, the whole is supposed to resemble a painted fresco, one on a massive scale. The view from above is said to show the lands in a far more pleasant light than would be experienced by those wandering through them.
  • Frigid Prairie: These dry grasslands are warm to scorching hot during the day, home to a few plains beasts and their predators who live in such lands. During the night, the temperature of the prairie drops precipitously, falling to noticeably below freezing. Many travellers, unprepared for temperatures dropping from scorching to freezing, have died during the night, as the temperatures dropped well below that which they had provided for. In the morning, a brief frost covers the prairie, and during spring and summer this causes and equally brief flowering of tiny plants as the frost melts, dampening the ground.
  • Funerary Hillocks: This range of small hills is not actually a natural feature. The hillocks are all cloaked in verdant grass and if they are carefully searched, entrances can be found into each. The entrances are thoroughly protected and sealed, and attempting to breach them is normally fatal. The hillocks are not so much small hills as they are large barrows, used by a long-ago civilisation to inter their most important leaders. Each hillock undoubtedly holds a wealth of grave goods, but so far no-one has managed to successfully rob one.
  • Gaoler's Wastes: This area was once clearly verdant jungle, but it has recently been turned into a wasteland by fire. Ash stands inches to several feet deep in places, with only a few hardwood stumps poking up out of it. The fire was clearly very intense. In the centre of the wastes is a low, black stone building with a few small windows that once had bars in them and now only have pools of once-molten iron. The building was once a jail, and is what the area is named after. The jail was clearly the origin point of the fire; perhaps something was imprisoned that was far more dangerous than expected.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
