What the Critics Say

"Without doubt, the definitive Call of Cthulhu monster guide... a full-color feast for the eyes and the absolutely essential compendium of Lovecraftian deities and denizens."—Andrew Logan Montgomery, Exploring the Otherworlds of Fiction, Magic, and Gaming.

"Looking back over twenty-five years of monster volumes for Call of Cthulhu, it's obvious that Chaosium's new two-volume Malleus Monstrorum is not just the best, but miles ahead of its predecessors. It's beautifully designed, gorgeously illustrated, and stunningly complete."—Shannon Appelcline, RPGNet Review.

"An important entry in the 7th Edition library... the breadth of the project is authoritative and all-inclusive. If I have a question about a Cthulhu Mythos monster this is probably the first place I'm going to go to now."—Dave Thaumavore (YouTube review)

Can I see this as an expanded version of the two supplements called Ye Booke of Monsters?
Is this a good purchase if I do not care of new artworks or update to 7e nut only on new entries and rules?

This is worth the money by the way. It's possibly the most extensive bestiary for Mythos Roleplaying out there.

As far as I know the only things that have been removed from this release because of copyright are "The Thing", and "The Martians" (From war of the worlds).

The printed version is for sale in the US and Australia via the chaosium website.
We will have the book for sale in the UK, Canada, and the EU in early January.
We do not know when it will be sold in game stores or other places because that is beyond our control.
It will probably be on Amazon some time next year, but the slipcase set doesn't even become available for distributors to order until January.
How much or when any distributor will start ordering it is up to them. I suspect Amazon will not have it before February at the earliest.

Allen A, are you for real? Or are you just trying to annoy the publisher who has told you two times already that there WILL NOT BE A POD. Stop asking. Your question has been answered. Chaosium sells physical copies of their products on their website.

The END.

The cost of doing two full color hardback books as POD would have a price tag much higher than what we sell it for on chaosium.com
Not to mention, you wouldn't get the slipcase.

D&D and Call of Cthulhu are two vastly different games. That's kind of like saying you wish that a popular video game would play at the local movie theater. They provide extremely different experiences.

Indeed, Call of Cthulhu and Dungeons and Dragons are different games.;Indeed a manual of monster stats would seem a good deal more appropriate for game like Dungeons and Dragons where going toe to toe with monsters in combat is a significant part of the game In by the book Cthulu combat is deadly vs. the weakest of opponents (human cultists, perhaps ghouls or non Mythos beings ). Much above that is simply party suicide. Mythos threats get dealt with by sorcery dug up in research or exploration, by stopping minions before the big bad ever steps on stage or by less direct means like collapsing structures and selling off monster liars (or rarely with desperate measures like steamship collisions to put them back to sleep). That said, Call of Cthulu itself has released rules that ratchet up the pulp and tone down cosmic horror. Facing facts, the monsters of the Mythos are going to be used as foes to wizards and warriors and superheroes for that matter, so why not books for 5e or Mutants and Masterminds. More traditional...See more

I believe Chaosium said they were planning for an October release of the printed copy of the books. That being said, they usually put up a thread on their forum for people to post errors they find in their books. I am dying to get the pdf and print out what I need for my games but not when it has a lot of errors that need to be addressed. I will wait until they start editing the book themselves and post updated files (both here and at their own website for the customers who bought it directly from them).

Yes, we have been correcting the reported typos and errors, and the printed books will be based on the updated PDFs. A new updated PDF will also be available in a few weeks for all purchasers. Many thanks to all that have been sending specific things that need correcting to our thread for this at BRP Central:

I love this supplement... the art is fantastic, and, as usual, content is excellent. However, there are a lot of typos. Here are some examples found in Vol. I, Deities: in the Zoth Ommog entry, the Typical Physical Manifestation box is named Zhar & Lloigor, even though it seems to correctly contain the stats for Zoth Ommog. Lilith is called Lillith in the Typical Physical Manifestation box (TPM box from now on). The TPM box for Dagon & Hydra seems to be cut short (it only arrives to armor, when every other box seems to have immunities and reform time indicated after that). Cythulos is referred to as Cynthulos in the entry title (or maybe is the other way round, I am not a deities expert). And I was not proof reading it, but simply enjoying it. To sum it up: the supplement is beautiful and useful and remains usable even though it is plagued by a rash of little mistakes. It only needs to be polished a little bit to really shine as it deserves.

Well, I have the utmost confidence in their capabilities. The idea was to write this here in the unlikely event they needed some hint (I think they read these comments) - I really think that if I noticed it, someone else on their side will do or has already done that and a new version is bound to arrive soon.

Naturally, errors crept in my little message about errors... my fault! The volume about deities is obviously the second and not the first and it seems I am so stupid as to not being able to write an ampersand correctly. Sorry to you all.

We are correcting any typos/errors found, updating the PDF, before it goes to print. As you can see from your own posts, typos are very easy to include and miss ; ) That's even after professional proofreading before release. But as I say, we are tracking down any remaining errors and fixing them. Thanks

Thanks Mike! Like Rodrigo expressed, you have our complete trust. Listing errors here was in a misguided attempt to signal those things to you Chaosium guys. Frank T promptly pointed out that there is a proper Forum Thread for these things, so I went there and checked if my findings were already in your list.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
