A Game of War and Intrigue

You’re no adventurer. You may have shaken blood off your sword after plunging it into an unholy beast, but the real monsters stalk the world’s thrones. You may have studied the unspeakable secrets of magic, but affairs of state have secrets that are no less horrifying, for they can turn a nation into a million-limbed juggernaut of war.

You belong to a noble house, and its fortunes rise and fall with your actions. You’re a lord, a knight, a servant in the shadows, or perhaps a sorcerer-sage, bound to a dynasty of rulers. A vassal’s honor binds you to obey those above your station, and the responsibilities of privilege make you well aware that your lessers prosper or suffer according to your will—or if you fail, in spite of it. Your people are yours to protect, but the world is yours to conquer. You’ve committed your house to the Sword Chronicle.

Sword Chronicle is fantasy roleplaying in Green Ronin’s Chronicle System, now customized for you to bring in your own worlds of intrigue-laden fantasy. Within this book you’ll find the following:

  • A classless gritty fantasy roleplaying game, where words can be as powerful as weapons—and weapons enforce your words.
  • Character creation that gives the heroes specific positions in a noble house of their own design.
  • Rules for the fantasy ancestries of elves, dwarves, and ogres, and frictionless game systems for playing a character of multiple ancestries.
  • Grim, dramatic combat where death is a risk, but profit comes from ransoming your noble enemies.
  • Revised and reorganized intrigue rules for the Chronicle System, to give socially oriented characters real power.
  • Mass combat rules fit for sieges and conquests.
  • Subtle, powerful magic for the Chronicle System.
  • Introducing the Shattered Era setting.

I'm really happy to see this setting neutral version of the system, and I do love many of the small changes here and there. There are however a couple of spots where there are tables or small rules tidbits missing, I've seen mention of this getting updated but this does not apear to have happened yet, any status on that?

So, are there any news about the print version?

Is there an official announcement about Game of Thrones or Dragon Age licenses? I am really sad those two series ended, because of the excellent design they offered in terms of adventures and encounters. I don't actually play their original systemas (nor AGE neither Chronicle), but I still love the adventures designed for them!

Looking forward to the print version!

Is there an official forum for questions on the system? I picked up the book but the rules on Ancestry are very unclear to me. And the example in the book makes no sense after reviewing the qualities and their respective sub-types. According to the book example they take the "Mummer" and have that as a Human Ancestry Quality...However that Quality does not have the Ancestry Quality subtype or even really have anything to do with being a human racially as its a profession. Is Ancestry just an excuse to give 2 free benefits to a character regardless of type and have some loose fluff on how it applies? Or are the 2 free Ancestry qualities supposed to be used specifically on "The Blood of ____" qualities listed? Maybe im being dense or overthinking this...but i dont think it should be this difficult. Help

How about a Discord?
https://discord.gg/ejNHbv

But to answer your question, Human ancestry allows you to choose any one non-ancestry trait (so you can't pick the ancestry specific traits like Blood of the Wood) to act as an Ancestry trait. All other ancestries have to stick to their specific list.
Customer avatar
Malcolm S August 21, 2020 3:41 am UTC
You want to visit the GRAAD Discord.

Humans can take any non-exclusive Benefit as an Ancestry Benefit, as well as those listed specifically for humans. Non-exclusive Benefits are anything that does not solely list an Ancestry as a prerequisite.

Basically you decide what your character's bloodline and background are based on your two picks (though you can also get more variety--it just doesn't have a game effect).

For the rest of your questions, pop over to GRAAD.

I am really interested in the setting - to see how the houses were set up to foster intrigue. Is there any depth to the setting? It is only 11 pages, so my assumption is no.

I really dug this game before it was setting neutral, and I dig it even more now that it has magic, ancestries, and a content guild.

From what I'm understanding is Green Ronin had years to redo this game system from the ground up, implement changes that others have proven to be successful, and then GR released SC with very little changes so the majority of problems still exist. Did GR think that people wouldn't figure this out?

This brings up another question: Why would GR release a game like this without doing the work to actually make it better and instead ignore years of known issues that seemingly fixed the game system?

I nearly pressed the buy button, until I got here. I played the parent game when it first came out, and the endless online house rules to fix.
Thanks all for the info.

So this is just taking the GoT game, stripping it down, and making it generic. Without fixing up the layout. How sadly unfortunate, but not surprising.

Well, it has added sorcery and a pinch of flavour on the different races (dwarves, elves, ogres). Haven't read it yet, though, maybe the sorcery is the same as in the previous sorcery book.

The sorcery system is streamlined compared to the original Chronicle of Sorcery book. You can use either system with the Sword Chronicle rules.

Why on Earth did you not combine the tables for price of armor and weapons and for their statistics? It is truly frustrating to have to go from p. 133 where are the statistics to p. 115, where are the prices.

I see some minor edits on the original SIFRP, like for example the armor does not reduce your defense anymore, but have to read it through, because all the changes are put in the small print. For example the table of the armor on p. 133 keeps the armor penalty, just the section on armor penalty states that it does not reduce your combat defense and it is really easy to miss.

Do not buy, unless you like paying $20 for a digital book that is a near copy past of the SIFRP core book and has the layout/visual quality of the 90s.

Is an intro scenario available or forthcoming? I was surprised not to see one in the previewed Table of Contents, and it doesn't appear that any of the Chronicle System supplementary pdfs are scenarios, either.

Sorry: Question may have got lost in the rest of the answers. I understand that a PoD is coming, but will there be a discount for people buying the full cost PDF? I went to the Green Ronin storefront and planned to buy it there assuming a coupon or something for a future print version. I didn't find the answer on PoD until I returned to the blog mentioning release today. Just wondering/hoping?

I can't believe how hard GR screwed up with this one.
Back in the SIFRP days there were dozens of threads on the official Forums on what bugs and exploits the game had and how to fix them and improve the game in general.
As far as I can tell none of those suggestions have been implemented in the new core rulebook, making the game just as unbalanced and easily exploitable as SIFRP was.
If I had known that I can still easily oneshot a knight in full plate with a throwing knife I wouldn't have even considered spending 20$ on this compilation of material that I already own, as it's mostly a compilation of all the other chronicle system products.
Please, PLEASE, GR: Review the old SIFRP forum, read the threads on how to improve the mistakes SIFRP did and do a revamp of this book.
Your system could be great - but currently it's just not.

Armor formerly lowered Combat Defense, making it easier for you to be hit and more heavily damaged. In Sword Chronicle, this is no longer the case, however.

Julian S August 17, 2020 8:30 pm UTC
Howdy. Are there Notes or errata on how to make these changes in SIFRP? The FAQ indicates that some rules had to be updated for this fix.

If a player character with high stats targets an unimportant tertiary character and rolls well, this is possible.

Otherwise, it's not.

So colour me confused, the OP says that nothing has changed, but Malcolm S is saying that Armor has been revised. What is the material impact of this change, as in has it resolved the problem that the OP presnents and they've missed it, or has it not made a significant change to the original "problems".
Customer avatar
Malcolm S August 18, 2020 12:33 am UTC
I believe I talked to the OP on Discord and the specific issue being mentioned is no longer one. Sword Chronicle was designed to provide a Chronicle core for existing players too and is not a big revision, but we did eliminate the specific thing discussed here. I don't want to put words in anybody's mouth, though, so don't take my response as definitive--its just that we didn't point an enormous arrow at that particular change, so it might be easy to miss on a first read!

I checked and what Maloclm S says is true - it is changed. It is, however, a little difficult to see, since it is in the description of the Armor Penalty next to the table, while the Armor Penalty still is in the table and applies. I myself got confused at first and if I hadn't checked this thread would not have noticed the change.

I do not know if there are other such 'fine print' changes.

GR working on the technical side of getting this done while finalizing POD details. Note that if you don't receive email from Green Ronin, you can't receive coupons. This isn't a devious sales funnel so much as how coupons (and other communications) happen.

These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
