Rules for daring Sword & Sorcery exploits in the Forbidden Lands

“There is always a way, if the desire be coupled with courage - answered the Cimmerian”

Fallen civilizations to ages past, powerful sorcerers seeking immortality, greedy characters that value gold more than life, ancient and forgotten magic, and certain elements of horror are some of the themes found in a Sword & Sorcery story. Forbidden Lands already shares many of these elements under an Old School Renaissance (OSR) umbrella, where characters are not heroes, but raiders and rogues in a cursed world.

This set of rules introduces elements of High Adventure to the Forbidden Lands, making the characters heroes of tales filled with action and epic deeds of bravery.

It includes an adventure where the player characters find themselves inside a city under siege, infiltrating into an ancient temple and interrupting forgotten rituals; all while trying to steal the relic of the cult of the one-eyed god before the army at the gates storms the city.

I love everything about this supplement except for one thing: using a Slow action to recover all Vigor or Resolve. This seems just a little too powerful to me. I was thinking of maybe changing this to cost a willpower point in addition to the slow action, limiting it to once per combat, or requiring it take your whole turn. I would love to hear your thoughts on this.

That seems like an excellent modification for a more grounded game!

Great work.

Additionally: I m flirting with the idea of splitting the hit points into hit locations just because I love this sort of early rpg feel. Do you think it could work with this subsystem?

Thanks!

Regarding splitting hit points among locations, you could run into issues with too few hp on each limb or double dipping effects with some of the results on the critical injury tables, which call for severed limbs and other consequences.

Loved it! If you like Forbidden Lands' OSR system but would like to play larger-than-life characters who aren't exactly heroes... this is the supplement you're looking for.

I love the whole flavor and specifically the rules created for Mobs (very attuned to the genre and will speed up play by reducing book keeping) and the Menace mechanic, which will delight many DMs out there by making a mechanic out of narrative complications.

Also, long live the Feral Ape, a creature that can rip you apart in one go!

By this axe I rule!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
