The Grimdark Pamphlet (5e)

ADD TO WISHLIST >

The Grimdark Pamphlet suggests rules additions and changes for the fifth edition ruleset to allow you to play grimmer adventures with morally ambiguous characters in a fantasy world beset on all sides by dire powers. In this world, life is brutal and short, victory is never assured, and madness and corruption threaten even the most resolute and steadfast.

"The Dark Souls of 5e" — A Dead Cleric

Be forewarned. Characters will face greater challenges and are more likely to die. Immortality in this world is a distracting fallacy held tight by those too cowardly to truly live.

Design Goals and Format

Our design goals for The Grimdark Pamphlet were straightforward: provide quality, playable, yet simple rules for playing darker stories with the fifth edition ruleset.

Second to this was that the rules should be packaged in a modest format that could easily grow. We’re not going to get too fancy with artwork and flashy layout here.

Lastly, The Grimdark Sourcebook is intended to test the water for a potential grimdark sourcebook and will grow with feedback from the community—your feedback. We’d love your input.

Congratulations. You have a painfully inept grasp on what is good and evil! Your "Morality" scale literally describes Good vs. Evil, in some vague, childish. notion. FYI: The good and evil alignment does not necessarily mean that all good characters are goody two-shoes, and every evil character is a seething hater, always trying to steal candy from babies. It's fluid and dynamic, and open to interpretation by the DM and players to allow their characters to act just the way that they want. There used to be charts of examples to plot out JUST HOW evil, lawful, good or chaotic your character was, but then players got wrapped up in discussing the nuances of just how good or evil their characters were, and never got around to playing the game. So.. those charts were quietly retired, in the interest of actually getting in some game-play time. The point is, the system DOES have a solid basis and can be VERY interesting and engaging if you just give it a chance.

I can't believe that you chose morality...See more

Yeah.. that wall of text was broken up in to nice neat topical paragraphs, DTRPG made it be a wall of text. I don't know why. Sorry abut that.

We've updated the book with the apothecary class, which is an alternate bard class. This includes two Apothecary Universities; the University of Leeching and the University of Alchemy.

The update also includes new base mutations for the mutant race, which apothecaries of the University of Alchemy can tap into with one of their abilities.

PURCHASER
Not too bad for the price but considering the class, backgrounds and race all seem to be geared around pirates and similar theme rather than grimdark, it feels like it should be two seperate booklets. extra weapons could just be reflavours of existing weapons and for the most part they are, most function exactly like weapons from the 5e phb except for having different names and having 'light/finesse' properties

Thanks for the feedback Jared. New classes are coming in the next update that'll push the grimdark side more.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
