AGON

ADD TO WISHLIST >
Selected Option:

A fast-paced tabletop roleplaying game of heroic action in the world of ancient myths.

Heroes of Legend

In the mists of ancient time, a poet sings of great deeds wrought by mighty heroes—of monsters slain and justice restored, of wise counsel and devious strategies, of courage, valor, and daring—defiant of the gods themselves. In AGON, you create these heroes, crafting their epic tale into an immortal legend. On their way back home from war, a band of heroes become lost among strange islands populated by mythical creatures, dangerous villains, legendary kingdoms, and desperate people—each entangled in strife, at the mercy of
the capricious gods.

It falls to you as the epic heroes of your age to seize this opportunity for greatness—to set things right in these lost lands, overcome the trials of gods, monsters, and mortals, prove the glory of your name, and win your way back home.

In this game, you’ll find:

  • A brand-new game system for fast-paced heroic adventure, featuring simple characters and mechanics, quick location-based adventures, and one-roll conflict resolution. Play it as a zero-prep one-shot — or enjoy the complete experience as an ongoing series of island adventures.
  • Rules for creating your epic heroes, earning Glory for their Names, and forging their eternal legends.
  • Divine Favor, Bonds, and Pathos to call upon for great deeds.
  • 12 pre-made island adventures full of gods, monsters, and people to challenge your heroes.
  • Contests of Arts & Oration, Blood & Valor, Craft & Reason, and Resolve & Spirit —testing both the prowess and passions of the heroes.
  • Guidance for the Strife Player, who presents the challenges of the islands.
  • The Vault of Heaven to record your progress towards returning home and the grace (or ire) of the gods.

Hi I am a backer from the kickstarter three years ago.
I feel awkward asking this after all this years.
May I ask for a copy of this game here?
Thanks for your time, regardless.

Does this version contain the eight extra islands from the Kickstarter stretch goals?

Fast & Furious in the recommended watchlist?
I'm confused.

I believe it’s for the simple feel of what your supposed to get from the setting with larger then life heroes going against insurmountable odds.

I just bought all of this (it looks fantastic on my first read through!), and happened to notice the slimmed down version on the marketplace on Roll20. I quite like the reference there to backgrounds and overlays etc., are these accessible anywhere outside of buying that module?

That's an Evil Hat product that's only available on Roll20 right now. It's not the game itself, but rather a set of tools for running it on that platform.

Thanks for the response. That makes sense, just checking that I hadn't missed a repository of Agon resources somewhere :)

How much different is this version compared to the 2006 version (by John Harper)?

This version is a completely new game design. Similar premise, brand new mechanics.

Same setting, very different design. Agon First Edition was my go to for one-offs as you could have a tight adventure with heroic level drama, and have a score that you can compare to other heroes attempts at that adventure. Brilliant (except for combat mechanics-that came broken in the box). The central theme of conflict and competition between players (including the Strife player) made it feel completely different from other games. Mr.Harper has removed the Strife player and replaced it with a normal DM. There are some cool aspects introduced(like a star map that plots players relationship to a god), and some questionable shoehorned/under-cooked ideas about splitting conflicts into beginning, middle and resolution (an idea Mr.Harper has been trying to fit into a game for years now). It certainly feels more generic rpg then the first edition. If you can get the first edition it really feels like you heroes against the gods. I would recommend getting the guts of first edition, taking the graphic skin...See more

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
