The Temple of Everlasting Regret - A short nonlinear story

"Finally, you have arrived at your destination after a long and treacherous journey. The drizzle and fading light accompanying you only add to the ominous feeling that permeates your being. Despite the rain's persistent attempts, it fails to remove the fear that grips you. You pause at the foot of the basalt cliffs and gaze up at the carved gateway and the inner sanctum beyond. You are old now, and the arrogance of youth has been replaced with a humble acceptance of your mortality. As you steel your resolve to enter, you light your lantern, letting its warm glow fill the darkness with familiarity. The flickering light reminds you of the importance of your journey and strengthens your decision. Then, with a determined mind, you step forward and pass under the arch, ready to face whatever lies ahead..."

The Temple of Everlasting Regret is a short, nonlinear story, or branching path narrative, about an older person seeking escape from death by entering a distant, deserted temple that may hold the solution to immortality.

This is a revised version of a text published in 2018 as part of the anthology The Death Book, a collection of different Swedish artists' reflections on the end of life as we know it.
