An adventure for Old-School Essentials, for character levels 2–3.

Welcome to the cult temple of Xanadu, an atmospheric temple-crawl for use with OSE, or similar old-schools RPGs.

A cult in the temple of Xanadu has opened a portal to another dimension. It was activated by adjusting the hands of three pendulum clocks in a particular sequence. Once the veil of reality was ruptured between this world and another, The Tooth Fairy stepped through, a winged creature from a dimension made of sweet stuff. The Tooth Fairy slaughtered everyone in the temple for their teeth, which she extracted and ate like candy. Rumors are circulating about unusual happening involving the temple, many are concerned. The Tooth Fairy is currently in her dimension, her appetite is ravenous, waiting to be summoned again. Rewards and riches may await those who venture forth to explore the temple, or dare to perform the ritual!

  • Explore for treasure and magic items.
  • Solve how to complete a ritual that summons The Tooth Fairy.
  • Encounter and defeat some horrible foes.
  • Discover unusual books and maps, useful as hooks for further adventures.
  • Suitable for character levels 2-3.

Includes:

  • All locations described in convenient 1 or 2-page spreads.
  • New monsters.
  • New magic items.
  • Numerous random tables.
  • Very easy to run!

Apparently it's still happening - but the translation is in the hands of the Italian publishers, so it will be in their own time

The bottom middle node of the clock puzzle on p. 31 has the "8" result listed twice, in the "upward" arrow and the "Uh-oh" arrow. Which is it supposed to be? Should the "Uh-oh" arrow be 9-0 rather than 8-0?

Why not make a POD copy available here?

That's a good question. Firstly, I thought the one-month print time on DTRPG (because of Covid) was too long. Secondly, I wanted to have quality control over the printing, paper stocks, finishing, etc. The print copies I had done were made by Mixam, which seem to do a lot of printing for OSR products. They look and feel great. A box of printed copies of Xanadu actually on their way to Exalted F. and should be there late this week.

Hi. The print copy will be available only through EF? No Europe distribution?

Hey Krzysztof, at this stage it will just be available at Exalted in print. I'd love to get them to Europe, but it's the very high cost in shipping right now - it's totally exorbitant! I'd love to hear if you have any suggestions of a Euro outlet, maybe someone similar to Exalted but based in Europe.

Hey Justin - they'll be at Exalted Funeral in the next week or so. I'm sending them a box of printed copies this week - there was a delay because of the holiday season/new year.

Hi Vasili, great work! A few questions: Is the description for area 21. PORTAL incomplete? If a character walks through the portal, do they simply reappear in front of the portal in area 2, or is there more text missing? And is the portal at 21 visible from outside the dungeon? The map seems to show a second entrance/exit there, and the description in area 1. ENTRANCE states that an item thrown through the portal at area 1 will appear "on the ground outside the other portal in area 21".

That's a good question!

The idea of area 21, is it's just some kind of ectoplasmic portal or rupture in reality. If the party walks through, they appear in area 2 (the big hall, just after the entrance where they originally confronted the glowing lanterns). If a party throws an item whilst they are at the entrance (area 1), then yes - it appears on the ground in front of the other portal in area 21, but inside the dunegon. Maybe the word 'outside' is confusing! I got the idea from a scene in the 1982 film Poltergeist!

In terms of area 21 being visible from 'outside' the dungeon, I would probably say there's just a solid stone wall there if looked at from the outside. I should have fleshed this out more, but as I used a map that was in the public domain by Dyson Logos, I adapted the adventure to the map. You could always say that the temple is built into an escarpment or cliff, so there is only one 'entrance' (area 1) in and out.

I hope this all makes sense!

Hey Matt - hopefully at Exalted F. soon. It's just a busy time of year for them heading into holidays, but hopefully not far away. I'll let you know when it it's up on their site.

I'm confused. Is the module in the Zine? If so, if I buy the zine do I get it as a pdf?

Hi Eugene, the module Xanadu (above) is a new, self-contained adventure for OSE and not included in any zine. The zine 'Aquilus' is by the same publisher, and available free for download, or 'pay what you want'.

If you are referring to whether there is a 'print' copy available, the answer is not yet (as of 29 October). There will be a print copy available in a few weeks, but not as print-on-demand on Drive Thru. I imagine that when the print copy is released (probably through Exalted), it will include a free PDF.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
