Aliens of Charted Space Vol. 1

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Aliens of Charted Space Volume 1 details four spacefaring cultures, three of them alien and one curiously familiar. These are the Zhodani, humans transplanted from Earth to develop in far-off Zhdant. Their well-ordered society is very different to the squabbling mini-states of the Vargr despite sharing a common Terran ancestry. The Aslan and the K’Kree, meanwhile, are polar opposites; proud warriors and militant herd-creatures.

This book contains rules for creating Travellers from each of these alien races, High Guard additions and new ships, and Central Supply Catalogue entries for their new equipment.

The Aslan

The Aslan Hierate lies to spinward of the Imperium and Solomani Confederation, with a long history of warfare and border tensions. The interplay between its many warrior clans can seem incomprehensible to outsiders, but there are strict rules of courtesy and deference governing every interaction. Learn how the Hierate functions and why its young landless warriors are a threat to all nearby civilisations.

The K’Kree

The Two Thousand Worlds of the K’Kree are almost entirely forbidden to meat-eating outsiders. On these worlds, the K’Kree have exterminated or domesticated all species of carnivore and have explicitly stated they intend to do the same to all meat-eating-races in Charted Space. This book shows the role of family and clan in K’Kree affairs, and why the K’Kree are the single greatest threat to Charted Space.

The Vargr

Descended from Terran wolves uplifted by the Ancients, the Vargr are widely known for their obsession with personal charisma and their preference for raiding rather than building. Vargr states tend to be short-lived, built around a cult of personality rather than a nation. This book reveals how a raider or pirate band operates, and how successful leaders transition from pirates to statesmen.

The Zhodani

Transplanted long ago by the Ancients, the Zhodani developed a society based on the ability to wield psionic powers. Considered by many to be a thought-police state, the Zhodani Consulate is stable, apparently benevolent, and its people are happy. Aliens of Charted Space Volume 1 reveals the secrets kept by the Tavrchedl’, or ‘Guardians of our Morality’, and the Zhodani Core Expeditions.

Bookmarks appear to stop working when you select any of the "K'kree" entries, jumping to High Guard Aslan instead.

I noticed while looking through the pdf that it only had character sheets for Aslan and
K'kree. Also when using the pdf I clicked on the drop down menu of the Contents but it didn't have the K'kree listed. I had to click on the last chapter for the Aslan to get to them.

Great stuff, but I did notice the "Prole" career events table on page 272 is a copy paste of the "Agent" career events table earlier in the Zhodani Careers section (Which in itself is from the Core rules), is this intentional (because these events do not make sense for a Prole) or is there going to be an update/errata to this brought out?

$60 base price...
I'm not sure who out there is buying a PDF of a non-core sourcebook at the price of a full AAA game on Steam.

I bought the core book and the companion because I was really interested and wanted to get into Traveller, but the PDFs' pricing is seriously wacky in comparison with other RPGs.
Considering this is probably mostly cribbed from previous editions all the way back to the 70s, it's really making me not want to get into.

I took a peak in the sample above and the first thing that caught my eye was the bit about "Aslan Mathematics". That made me blink real hard and go "......What."
Yeah, listen, if the entire book is basically just obscure factoids like those - things that I don't see ever featuring in an actual session - then I'm gonna double pass.

Even at a half-price discount, I can just get a an entire full game on Steam for an even lower price.
$35-$60 for a collection of probably-won't-be-seen-at-the-table...See more

I don’t know who is buying it as a lone PDF either, but it has gone Silver already, so somebody is. Speaking as somebody who got the free PDF with the hardcopy presale, I can say I really like it.

All these complaints are pretty redundant - at the end of the day, the number of sales that Mongoose makes on their own product is their own business. They set the price; customers decide if they want to buy or not. It’s not as if RPGs have a massive profit margin - with the license fees, writing and art all giving overheads. It may be that Mongoose considers their main market to be physical book sales, with PDFs just a small sideline. Who knows? But I don’t get why people think that complaining here will change their pricing policy. Nor is it particularly edifying for anybody else.

I never buy hardcopy, a good tablet and PDFs are far more useful to me.

This is on Mongoose Publishing. DriveThruRPG is just selling the PDF legally and Mongoose sets the minimum price.
I find Mongoose's price structures to prohibitively expensive. I even reached out to them and explained that their game is a niche game and that a little quantity would offset the lower price. Another problem is the lack of quality in editing.

Their response? The sound of silence.

Can't say I'm surprised. They'll eventually price themselves out of the market

There should be a template for how often people complain about Mongoose's PDF pricing. Maybe just don't buy it if you don't like the price. Or get the hard copy for a few dollars more.

And you get the PDF thrown in for free if you buy the hardcopy from their website of course. That’s what I did.

As long as we keep buying PDFs at the current prices, there is no need for Mongoose (or any vendor) to lower a price. Want a price to go down on ANY of the digital offerings; don't buy. The price will go down of it will flop.

I really wish Mongoose’s previews included the table of contents. That would give a prospective buyer a much better look at what they’re getting than a random clump of pages.

The previewed Aslan material is a verbatim copy of the material in book 2 of Pirates of Drinax. (Which means that you already have a quarter of this book if you have PoD.) Extrapolate from that for the other 3 races to work out what you're getting.

Ben, I agree with you m8, having a TOC would give purchasers a far better idea on what's in the book.

I'd really like to buy this, but I think $35.99 for a PDF is too high a price point. It creates the appearance they are overpricing at $59.99 (which is $10 more than a D&D5E hardback copy of the player's handbook), and then "discounting" down to their normal asking price of $35.99, which IMHO, is still too high.

I can't say I like Mongoose's pricing; they always seem overpriced for most things at the best of times

To put this into perspective, in 1985 the Traveller Alien modules retailed for $6 in the US or £7.95 in the UK. For that you got 40 pages of a single alien race. In today's money, I gather that would be around $15 or £24. That's $60 or £96 for four races. The actual retail price for hard copy is $60 or £45 from Mongoose. So, good value in UK, and fair in the US (helps that Mongoose is British, I suppose).

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
