WICKED ONES is a Forged in the Dark tabletop RPG about a group of fantasy monsters building a dungeon, launching raids on the surface to gather a hoard, and pursuing your nefarious master plan. Along the way, there's pillaging, rituals, concoctions, contraptions, discoveries deep in the ground, dungeon rooms, traps, creatures, minions, and so much more! You build your dungeon over time throughout the campaign and no two dungeons will ever be alike.

You bask in choosing the greater of two evils as your group strives to accomplish its master plan and terrorize the region around your dungeon. However, your vile deeds lure increasingly greedy and powerful adventurers into your dungeon. Can you stave off the inevitable onslaught of heroism that your notoriety brings?

This game may not be suitable for those under 13 years old.

FEATURES (FREE EDITION)

You can grab the Free Edition here to try it out first.

● Forged in the Dark: Built on the framework made by John Harper for Blades in the Dark, with significant changes to better represent monstery gameplay.
● Build a Dungeon: Rules for building and drawing out a dungeon together, including traps, tricks, creatures, locks, minions, and things you discover underground.
● Cycle of Play: Four phases of play (lurking, calamity, raiding, and blowback) that set the pace of dungeon life.
● Dark Hearts, Dark Impulses, and Going Feral: Game mechanics that reinforce that you’re a monster.
● Flexible Spell System: Players choose a specific path of magic or god they worship, then flexibly create spells of different power levels on the fly.
● Powerful Ritual Magic: This extends magic further, allowing the creation of very powerful magical effects, though you must fulfill some special requirements and fight off those who might seek to stop your rituals.
● Monster Science: A robust crafting system to create whatever contraptions and alchemical concoctions you can imagine.
● Safety Tools: A write-up on recommended safety tools (X-Card, Movie Ratings, Lines & Veils) to help your group with sensitive subject matters.
● Nine Monster Playbooks: Play as several different types of monsters, each of which have a lot of room for making unique characters. Play as a Brute, Conniver, Crafter, Hunter, Marauder, Shadow, Shaman, Warlock, or Zealot.
● Five Dungeon Themes: Each theme has a unique core function and list of rooms that can only be built within that dungeon, allowing your dungeon to match your group’s preferred playstyle. Build an Enclave, Forge, Hideout, Stronghold, or Temple.
● Quiet Valley Sandbox Map: A regional map to give a place to build your dungeon within and rules to set up factions on that map cooperatively with all players at the table. This group worldbuilding fosters a great sense of co-authorship and buy-in from the players.
● Primal Ability: Choose any monstrous race and represent them by building their own unique abilities.
● Easy Start: A clear session 0 / session 1 starting scenario to get your dungeon up and running while teaching all players the game mechanics.

ADDITIONAL FEATURES (DELUXE EDITION)

For those that wish to delve deeper and expand their campaign and player options or get the book in beautiful hardcover form:

Three more sandboxes with factions and goals for each! Each of these is a high-quality map of an entire region for you to explore and terrorize.
  • City Sewers. Build your dungeon underneath a corrupt island city
  • Colonial Seas. Plunder the high seas and lay low in your island dungeon
  • Warzone. Launch strikes amidst the chaos of a regional war.

Four primal monsters, iconic monsters that don't follow the typical callings, instead having unique abilities and mechanics that better capture them. Each primal monster has mechanics vastly differing from the normal callings. We really stretched what the system can do to make them fun, interactive, and feel like each monster!

  • Braineaters (tentacled horrors) master powerful psionic disciplines giving a new type of magic to interact with, but have voracious appetites. There are four psionic disciplines and players must choose where to focus their efforts, so while all Braineaters can use psionic powers, the way in which they use them differs greatly!
  • Doomseekers (multi-eyed abberations) with eyestalk magic and mechanics for modelling their paranoid, overplanning nature. This is a totally unique playstyle where the PC is encouraged not to leave the dungeon, but can still affect raids on the surface from afar through their meticulous planning, all supported by the mechanics.
  • Facestealers (dopplegangers) can assume the appearance of their victims, but fight a constant struggle in keeping ahold of their own identity. For monsters, the civilized world of humans and dwarves is often off-limits - Facestealers can easily slip among them, creating an entirely new experience.
  • Goldmongers (dragons) begin as tiny whelps and grow into huge terrors, gaining power and size as the hoard itself grows. The Goldmonger's growth paths allow for a ton of flexibility in creating very different types of dragons. It's seriously almost an entirely new game mode.

Digital assets of the art from this book for use online, such as adventurer, imp, and monster tokens, clocks, and high-resolution sandbox maps. There are hundreds of images here to make running your games online more fun, though also work great as printouts for play at home.

Dungeon generator to help GMs build dungeons for use in other games or as a quick one-shot dungeon defense. The dungeon generator pushes you to develop a fully fleshed out, living, breathing dungeon with many interconnected parts. Then just take that dungeon over to your favorite system and run some heroes through it.

Ouch! :(

Well, the good news is that the changes weren't that substantial overall. Had I not made them really clear, I doubt anyone would've noticed.

That said, if you'd like to order the latest version, get in touch and I'll send you an at-cost code. You could then gift a friend the older one or something. This goes for anyone that has bought the older version!

Anyway, sorry about the timing!

Hello,

we had a session and I'm not sure how loot works. Am I supposed to roll loot dice and get the total in gold pieces?
I would be glad for an answer as my group is eager to spend the loot.

Kind Regards

Check out Loot Rolls on pg. 234! But I'll paste the relevant section here.

Loot Rolls
You roll a number of dice equal to the amount of loot you
hauled in from your last raid. Each die rolled gives you
something based on its result.

Failure: You enjoy some revelry, gaining a dark heart. If you already
have two dark hearts, you instead overdo it!
Mixed: You gain 1 gold or spend it on revelry instead.
Success: You pull a mundane or valuable item from the loot. The player
chooses what it is.
❖ You can combine two successes into a critical to pull a powerful item
from the loot instead. The GM chooses what it is.

No worries! The information is separated on two pages, so it is a little difficult to reference. In v1.2, which'll be uploaded soon, there will be a page reference to the other part on each page.

Also when in doubt, don't forget there's an index!

Is there a potential for this game to be played solo ? Lots of work to do, many modifications to implement ? Seems like it could be a very fun world to play !

Actually, we have a set of solo rules in the works right now, being written by Peter from Parts Per Million games. He's written a lot of other solo rulesets you might be familiar with! The beta doc just got posted up on our Discord (http://discord.banditcamp.io) if you'd like to give it a try now, actually.

I imagine the Solo rulebook will be released in about 2 months.

It can do one-shots, but you won’t get into high-tier dungeon upgrades unless your GM is generous with starting loot.

From pg. 21:

“While the game works well as a one-shot or even a short length campaign, an ideal campaign of Wicked Ones covers about 16 sessions, which is 4 months of weekly 3-5 hour sessions. You can expect a dungeon invasion about every third or fourth session and your dungeon to increase in tier at the same rate. As your dungeon approaches tier 4, you get closer to realizing your master plan and the region around the dungeon becomes more likely to unite against you.”

Is there any chance for a cheaper softcover version of the book?
Customer avatar
Ben N January 14, 2021 1:14 pm UTC
PUBLISHER
No plans at this point (and the softcover would only be $5 cheaper). It just doesn't seem like a bif enough difference...

The real difference would be in standard color, but I'm really hesitant to release a standard color version because it doesn't do the artwork justice.

I think giving people options would be nice, but I think the naming (standard/premium) isn't really indicative of quality, so I'd have to try to explain that within the product description. It's a can of worms that's mostly solved by having one print option that we're happy with.

Is the current errata incorporated into the PDF/POD, or will be in the near future? Just want to time my POD purchase if that’s on the way.
Customer avatar

PUBLISHER
The current errata isn't posted anywhere yet. I've compiled a short list of errors (mostly layout / spelling - nothing mechanical) and clarifications, but haven't uploaded it yet. It will be going up in the WO download package later this week.

The PDF itself won't be updated for a few weeks, unless there's a major error discovered.

The POD book won't be updated for a few months, probably in mid Spring. If anyone buys the PDF now and wants to wait on the POD, you can send me a message later with proof of purchase and I'll email you an at-print-cost code for the POD. The same goes for anyone that purchased the original POD and wants to update to the most recent version.

Hi, I am also interested in this. So, if one would like to have the updated physical copy + a PDF to look through, what would be the best way to accomplish that? Can we buy now the combo but have it printed&delivered once it is updated? Should we wait instead?

Roll20 sheets are currently being developed. You can check out the progress on the Discord's #wo-workshop channel!

Finally, I'll also be releasing Google Sheets that you can use to play online very soon.

Will you guys release a DM screen? If so, it'd be really cool if it had a Progress clock worked into it with a movable plastic arm.

No plans in the works, mostly because Forged in the Dark games tend to be pretty open about information shared around the table.

We'll be releasing some reference sheets pretty soon (including two specifically for GMs) that can be slotted into GM screens, though!

That idea about clocks is neat, though. I wouldn't mind seeing a Kickstarter or something that had those kind of progress clocks and a space for dry-erase labelling.

I have a question about Drawing the dungeon process(p.171):

1. Should one of the player choose sanctum as one of the dungeon features?

2. Are the number of initial dungeon features determined by the number of players? (So, 3 players = 3 features, like tier 1 room/tier 1 trap/tier 1 trick)

Customer avatar
Ben N December 30, 2020 1:51 pm UTC
PUBLISHER
No, each dungeon begins with each of those features listed on pg. 171. The players take turns choosing one of those from the list and drawing it out. I will add a note in the errata to clarify this. The new text:

> A new dungeon has one of each of the features below. Players go around the table clockwise choosing and drawing a feature from the list until everything has been drawn.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
