I'm thinking about moving from the Hero (Champions) system to this system for a campaign I'm writing. The campaign is a sort of origin story starting in the 1930s and ending in modern times. Its a sort of Indiana Jones/The Mummy turns into Marvel. My question is; does this system support Heroes as well as Superheroes. Are the attributes/skills/powers flexible enough to have a good adventure as fisticuffs heroes? Thanks.

Short answer...Yes! This game has it's flaws (e.g. convoluted character creation rules, vagueness in the combat section, a surprising level of complexity for a highly narrative game) BUT it's the one I would run if I was at all interested in an Avengers type of hero group where the PCs can contribute more or less equally despite wildly varying power levels.

Hello, I'm a french gm who loves Superheroes RPG (M&M3, Icons AR, Supers RED), objectively is this game useful outside of the Sentinels Comics setting that I don't know at all ?

Absolutely. I use the system for a game set in the DC universe modeled after the Young Justice animated series.

Any place to get the blank sheets for environment, villain's etc. to print out? Thanks. I bought the print book on amazon but dont really want to spend 30 bucks so I can print out blank sheets that are so pretty and premade already. Thanks

A great book and my top superhero RPG at the moment, but as a word of warning the character creation says of the NPCs in the back "All heroes in this book are made using
this process, so don’t worry about being outclassed by existing heroes" and while they are the same power level as a PC at the same time there are a lot of mistakes made in their creation if you try to reverse-engineer them, perhaps being made under earlier iterations of the rules, so 'made using this process' is not accurate.

I see a dice roll to determine options when creating characters. Is there an alternate points based creating ruleset? You have X number of points to use to build a superhero? Thx in advance. BTW, the artwork looks amazing.

Hi Darren! The dice rolls just generate options from a table. There are no stats to build with points or "point buy" system. Thanks so much! Hope you enjoy! You can also contact us at contact@greaterthangames.com if you have more rules questions. -Bailey from GTG

Can you copy and paste from the book to a character sheet? I already have a physical copy, but making up villains and PC is kind of a pain writing everything down. I was seeing if its worth buying the pdf to spend of making PC and Villains.

I ran a DC Heroes campaign for a decade and have been looking for a new updated game for my reunited group. I can't get past the price on this PDF!! Is this some highly coveted, long lost book recently come available? Superhero RPG books do seem to be on the upper end of the cost spectrum.

It's a relatively new game, actually. This is the core book, with more on the way.
There's also several official adventure 'issues', along with a starter kit(There's been some rules updates since the starter kit though).

If you like buckets of D6 (12d6 or 24d6) to roll a success of 2's 4's and 6's, then this is the game for you. I like the uniqueness of the system where you get different effects each stages of HP (green, yellow, red), just the loads of dice that turns me off.

Overall, nice concept. Expensive for the book, but very much justified with its content and layout, specially the cool graphics. Very good artist by the way.

I think a major reason for the high cost is that they developed an original RPG system from the ground up (then trashed it, rebuilt, trashed, rebuilt, etc.)
I think its one of the best RPG systems I have seen, as it gives a ton of freedom, and motivates collaborative storytelling in a really unique way.

Just to set proper expectations, this is not related to any previous DC Heroes RPG, other than they are both in the superhero genre. Sentinel Comics spun-off from the Sentinels of the Universe card game and the other games set in the same multiverse.

Um, not sure where the buckets of dice comes from, because you're rolling three every time as far as I understand, certainly not 24d6.

You only roll three dice. Don't know where you're getting buckets. This system used 3 dice, min, mid, and max.

I must admit, I am having some trouble with the rules. Maybe it's layout - you start trying to explain the rules and only later, during character creation, actually explain what some of these things mean - but I sat there several times after reading the short panel-like example sequences, saying " I don't get it". Especially when you are referring to tables that are not shown until much later in the book (like penalties you can impose for hindering people...when is it a -1 or a -2 etc.). And if this sounds like rambling...well, that's what reading through the rules feels like for me. And I have been running rpgs for 15 years now, so it's not an issue with me being dumb. Is there a cheat sheet or a more comprehensive writeup? I really want to grok this.

Nowhere near as bad as the Shadowrun books, though I will freely admit some parts should have been shuffled around to make more sense.

If it helps, there's an index in the back of the book(before the character and villain sheets). That will give you all the pages involved in a topic, hopefully making it a little easier to understand.

The rules are relatively simple once you understand them. This game is nowhere near as complicated or crunchy as D&D.

Haven't read the book yet, but the compressed version was done so poorly-- i was able to use a free program on the high res version and get better image quality and smaller file size while preserving the bookmarks.

Fun system and I’m really enjoying it. I think a guide to the Sentinel Universe would be handy because looking at the starter adventures I really feel like I’m starting a book in the middle. Just a text timeline of “what has gone before” would help cement the setting

Yeah I absolutely agree with Paul B's comment - I can struggle with contrast at times, and the grey and pixelly background is just too heavy. If it was on another layer to turn off then maybe, but really it needs to be *very* faint, or just removed - it really doesn't add anything to the style. I've noticed that's it's also overlaying the art, which is a complete design fail and ruins it. I also agree with other comments re: filesize - this makes it completely impractical for general use on a tablet or phone, even PC's struggle with this! As with the art-background issue, this suggest needing proper layout and optimisation - there are plenty of graphics-heavy books out there that are much smaller.
Shame, as it's a good looking game, but as it stands all this would rule me our from buying unless fixed.

The gray pixel effect is supposed to only show on the Yellow/Orange headers, and not over whole swaths of the page. That is the way it is on the PDFs themselves, and the actual physical book. I am not sure what is up with their preview, but it must be from an older version of the document.

Ah ok, that makes a lot more sense. Actually, now that I know to look for it, it does look like a mistake in rendering or something like that. The pixely squares were clearly used just to add a pixel texture into the header boxes, but for some reason in the document they uploaded as their preview it's not rendered properly and the entire square is visible in each instance.
That's something they should look into and fix because right now their preview is not representative of the actual product and could end up hurting their sales.

I have the same problem. As a blind gamer, the ability to read PDFs with a screen reader is of paramount importance. The game looks exciting, especially when I saw Cam Banks associated with it. But it’s hard to justify the price tag, especially when I’m not even sure I’ll be able to read the PDF.

Just from looking at the preview, this looks like it would be a nightmare to read through. Those weird pixely squares in the backgrounds of some of the pages make the text downright invisible unless you really focus on it. Such a weird design decision.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
