Howdy partner!  Welcome to the Old West!

The American frontier has always been a source of American mythology and has been explored in novels, on the stage, and on film and television.  Now, with Rider, you can enter the world of the Old West.

Rider uses the Cepheus Engine rules as a base with modifications made to fit with the "Old West" setting. Rider draws inspiration from both fictional and historical Western lore but definitely sides with fictional portrayals.

Rider features improvements on the character generation system you will find in Clement Sector and Earth Sector.  While we continue to follow the Independence Games tradition of giving characters full backstories, Rider gives the player a greater control over that backstory while maintaining the fun of random character generation.

Rider features numerous details on gambling, drugs and alcohol, weapons, horses, and what one might find in a Western town.  The game has 23 Career Paths with everything from Homesteaders to Vagabonds. You'll find Clergy, Doctors, Gunslingers, Con Artists, Soldiers, Outlaws, and many more.  Rider has our quick NPC generation system as found in Clement Sector along with special rules for train heists, bank robberies, and, of course, the showdown at High Noon!

Are you ready for a new adventure?  Then saddle up and get ready to ride!

Why play the same old fantasy game? Haven't you ever wanted to shoot a no good card cheat? Well in Rider you can.

The time period is roughly the 1880's but that's just to give you a mental image. It doesn't have to be set in the US, or even on Earth for that matter. But if it is? So much to pull from.

Maybe you are an immigrant from Ireland, you scraped together enough money to book a one way steamship to the free and open west. You work back East for a few years to save up money for a homestead, then you hear about this Land Rush happening out in Indian Territory.

Author John Watts provides all of this enjoyment and imagination to us in this fantastic book. You can't go wrong buying a product from Independence Games.

Now order your copy and settle the West!

I don’t know if it’s been mentioned or not, but is there a character sheet out there that is more printer, friendly? The sheet that comes with the game has a dark ink/toner heavy background. And something that isn’t form fillable. I did find one that was printable, but you could only use it is form fillable. If you printed it out, it would be blank. No box outlines.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
I like the re-tooling of the original travel rules. And I love the old west stuff. Can’t wait to get into this. Just bought it.

I've been looking at the Rider rules recently, and I discovered that every career has a Survival roll of 8+ to remain in the career (and avoid a Mishap). Unless the appropriate characteristic is at least 9 (giving a +1 to the roll), you have about a 40% of success. That seems excessively difficult. I compared to the Cepheus Engine Traveller doc (as well as the Mongoose Traveller book). Both of those use Survival rolls of 5, 6 or 7+ (even for dangerous careers). MUCH easier to actually succeed. I don't know why Rider makes it so much more difficult. If I ran a Rider game, I'd have to change those values to bring them in line with the other books.

It’s your game. Change it. By the way, I agree.

I'd like to see a comparison with Under Western Skies.

Have you considered a 'Weird West' add on for Rider? Just a book with with some supernatural elements, a light magic system (maybe a 'faith' system), a couple of careers (Shaman, Occultist, that sort of thing). Some info on the more famous Native American myths and creatures (Wendigo, Sasquatch, etc.) as well as some of the European and African traditions that were transplanted around this time. Could be cool.

Would also love to see something like this. I'm looking for a weird west system to pull the trigger on and am currently leaning towards picking up Rider for a 2024 campaign. Official support on weird or occult content would def be a quick purchase to make my life easier

You say, "...uses the Cepheus Engine rules..." Do I need them in order to play this game? If so, which version?

Actually, it uses the Cepheus Engine as the basis for the rules. You will not need a copy of the Cepheus Engine to play as all of the rules for Rider are contained within this book.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
