Rubble and Ruin

ADD TO WISHLIST >
Selected Option:

The rising sun illuminates the vault door in the back of the partially collapsed office building. You  have  traveled through endless rubble of the dead city to find this long-sealed entrance. Is this the gateway  to a forgotten military laboratory or just a storage vault of useless papers from the old world? The answer is yours to discover as you crawl into the rubble and ruin.

But whatever the answer is, this is not the same old dungeon!

Rubble and Ruin reimagines the classic dungeon crawl as a post-apocalyptic cyberpunk dystopia. Instead of wizards, sages, and clerics seeking lost magic, there are engineers, scientists, and physicians combing the ruins searching for Old Tech.

Players take roles like cyborg warriors, uplifted rat mechanics, transhuman scientists, robot engineers, or wild-type scavengers. Whatever the role, the characters are scavengers exploring the destroyed world, looking for the bits and bobs of old technology that can be repaired and traded to the surviving enclaves.

Powered by Mythras Imperative, Rubble and Ruin provides a complete near future post-apocalyptic world. Characters can be cyborgs or bioengineered mutants or any of ten different biotypes. Rubble and Ruin has extensive rules on Old Tech cover everything from electrical engineers building custom sensors and high-powered radios to chemists manufacturing explosives and medical supplies. Yet all characters know something about technology. Maybe your cyborg rolls their own ammunition with the Handloading specialty or your uplifted rat is an expert ay bypassing electric locks and cracking safes.

Be Advised. Post-apocalyptic games cover many different kinds of settings from ultra-realistic tails of life two hundred years after nuclear war to gonzo worlds of talking rabbits and telepathic plants to grim adventures set during a zombie apocalypse. This game is built around one setting. A re-interpretation of the canon fantasy as magicless science fiction setting, twenty years after the collapse of a dystopian cyberpunk civilization. The goal is to recreate the feel of an old school dungeon crawl in a science fiction, magic-free setting where technology and science replace spells and enchantment.

There is. Drivethrou just did a large technical change that effected black and white books--they improved the paper quality--long, boring story. Something must have gone wrong in the switch. I'll reach out to tech support and see to it. Will likely be fixed soon. Please check back in a few days.

Hi.

I'm fan of postapocalyptic settings and your game looks great.

I want print the pdf to read in paper (I usually only buy pdf because international shipping is too expensive) but when I went to printing window I realized the page size at the pdf is 10.30 x 12.20 inch (26.16 x 30.99 cm) and the margins are very wide.

If I print with "Fit to printer margins" option the text is very small. If I print without scalation the text is ok but the externarl margin is very narrow and the internal very wide.

This happens also in all your other pdfs except "Free City of Carbondale" (which has standar letter size 8.50 x 11.00 inches).

Any advice for better printing?

Thanks in advance.

PS: Sorry for my English.

Hello Juan,

I'm sorry this happened to you. I know why everything but the Carbondale is messed up--at a certain level. When I published Carbondale I used the new Affinity software for the page layout and it works great. Unfortunately, the earlier products were put together in some kludgy old freeware that is a little weird with the edge cases.

On my system they print fine. I use Adobe Acrobat DC on Windows. They should print on the U.S. standard 8.5 inch by 11 inch paper with normal normal margins. I would try printing to that scale with "scale to fit" on... But I don't know why the page size that you are seeing has the wrong aspect ratio.

Let me know if you are unable to get it to print and I will see what I can do.

Regards,

Rich

Hi.

Thanks for the quick reply.

I tried to print the file with PDFCreator configured with letter size and adjusting the settings. The best thing I could get were some inches displaced (readable but "moved").

Probably I could get a better outcome adjusting with the printing settings, but in the mean time I thought another solution.

Using the crop tool in Adobe Acrobat Pro y cropped the pages guiding with the cover and backcover (odd and even pages respectively). I get a pdf with 8.55 × 11.04 inches. Now the margins are ok enough.

Now when I print in DIN A4 (the standar size here (210×297mm (8.3 × 11.7 inches)) in actual size, it's almost perfect (there is only 2 mm displacement between even and odd pages).

Thanks.

Hi,

How hard would it be, d'you think, for users to expand this to the more "gonzo" (i.e. "Gamma World" & the like) settings? I'm guessing we'd need to go to "Luther Arkwright" or even "Destined" lines for the wider arrays of mutations, but... is the rest of it more or less already there, in R&R?

Here are some thoughts, without any playtesting.

Each of these ideas increases the “gonzoness” but I’m not sure by how much.

1. Double the number of enhancements every character gets.

2. Make the Mutation Side Effects (p.43) less cosmetic: blue skin you look like a smurf; leopard spots and the character actually looks like a leopard.

3. Allow Ubber rats and barkers to be any related animal. Someone wants to play a mutant hamster—just use the rats as a template. Use barkers for leopard men and other carnivores.

3. Make new biotypes for other animal mutants. This requires a little work—but not too much. Alternatively, you could allow each character to have a dice pool and they allocate the dice according to their base animal. A mutant bear might get six dice in STR and four in CON, but then they have less dice for other attributes.

4. You can grab more mutant powers and psionics from Basic Role Playing. All the d100 games are...See more

I’ve been reading R&R (and loving it so far) and I may have missed it, but in the common weapons table, the damage rating for some weapons includes “+db.” What is that? Is it just damage bonus (modifier)? If so, why isn’t it on some melee weapons?

Another error on my part. In the Mythras family of games, with some weapons you get to add your damage bonus, but not with others. I forgot to make that clear in the description of the weapons table, but those with damage followed by +db get to also include the character's damage bonus. Sorry for the confusion.

I'm confused on what dice I need. Do I use a normal set or something different? Where do I find the rules on what dice to use for checks as well? I think I'm missing this information.

Hello Travis.

Sorry for your experience. Trying to determine the best organization for a book like this is always a challenge.

The basic rules start on p.52. This covers things like how to make skill rolls.

If this is one of the first role playing games you’ve experienced, on p.11 there is a link to an RPG Primer. Unfortunately, RPGamer reorganized their site, so the new link is https://archive.rpgamer.com/savingthrow/primer.html. It is written for someone playing D&D but the basics are the same for games like Rubble and Ruin.

Rubble and Ruin is a member of a group of games called the Mythras Gateway. There is an active Mythras community that would love to meet new players. We can be found on discord at https://discord.com/channels/469341944888164352/ or on The Design Mechanism’s forums at https://www.tapatalk.com/groups/designmechanism/.

All the games in the Mythras family are a subset of games known as Basic Role Playing or BRP. This...See more

I like the product, and it compares favorably with the previous publication as Monograph #389 for the BRP system. I have a few minor issues, however.
Can we get access to a character sheet that does not have the background image and access to higher resolution map images for the western and eastern United States?
How would you suggest porting the Sleepers culture to the Mythras system?
Thank you for your efforts and time. It is appreciated.

Hello Dennis,

Thank you for your kind words! The short answer to your question is "yes". I'll publish those files as a free downloads and post links below. Since I am new publisher, it will take a few days for the ZIP file to become available, but I have loaded them into the queue. I’ve included high resolution images of all the maps in Chicago Ruins, the character sheet, and a black and white version that does not have the background art.

With regard to sleepers, I would require an Enclave culture and the Born Yesterday flaw. This flaw is specifically designed for characters like sleepers with no knowledge of life in the rubble.

As a GM, if I was running a game of all sleepers, I would give everyone the flaw for free (going over the only 2 points of flaws limit) and require the characters to use the extra point to start with additional equipment. This captures the feel of other games that focus on well equipped groups of sleeper characters.

Kind...See more

Thank you for asking. No. Rubble and Ruin is built on Mythras Impetrative which is a subset of the Mythras system published by The Design Mechanism. All of these rules are included within the Rubble and Ruin core rule book. Further, since Mythras Impetrative is a free download, I would encourage people to check it out before buying (the link is in the text above).

Yes it does. There is a Creatures of the Ruin section with 17 pages of creatures. A few are common animals mentioned in the text or that are post apocalyptic staples, goats and feral dogs, but most are more unusual. These include things like bioengineered gnolls and their riding bears, giant skunks, killer robotic wasps, and my personal favorite the dreaded veloci-chicken.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
