Solo Roleplaying Rules for Dungeon Crawl Classics and Hubris

Dungeon Crawl Classics CompatibleThis solo roleplaying supplement enables playing Dungeon Crawl Classics without a Judge. The rules are split into three sections. It is an excellent companion to quickstart your way into Dungeon Crawl Classics.

Part 1: This deals with solo playing and the basic yes-no question. These are handled with a DC style check using DC5, DC10, and DC15 as breakpoints and critical no/critical yes on a 1 & 20. These mechanics are used for asking about the world and for controlling other characters, such as when you have an entire party of 0 level characters to nurse through their first adventure.

Part 2: Two options are presented for open questions. The first is an icon-driven visual oracle. Sixteen d16 tables of icons are provided. You roll for two icons and use them to suggest an answer to questions, and even to plan your sandbox adventures. The second method uses random rolls to find a random page, paragraph, and sentence in any rule/setting books. Find two sentences and then pull out any words that suggest an answer to your question. Use as many books as you like, including any sword and sorcery fiction as sources of inspiration.

Part 3: How to play through modules and now to create a sandbox campaign where you do not know what is going to happen next.

This is a 40 page PDF, two pages are cover and front matter. It is a layered PDF allowing you to turn off images for ease of printing.

I think there may be an incomplete sentence on page 11.
"Two alternative methods are shown later, Clocks and Drama
Dice. Each has its own strengths and weaknesses. You may ..."
Seems like there is more to that last sentence where the "..." is.

I need to get this (and will when I get some money). Any plans to make a solo supplement specifically for Weird Frontiers, too? I'd pick that up as well.

I will add it to my to-do list. I don't own that game yet, so I look out for it if it comes up in a bundle or deal.

Cool! I shall keep an eye out for it. Figured I'd ask since it runs on the DCC engine, so there's probably a lot from the DCS rules that would be easy to migrate over.

So there are a ton of books here for various systems. How functionally different are they from each other? Does the system for solo DCC differ that greatly from say the FATE or Dungeon World solo systems?

Interesting question. There are two threads of thought in each book. The first is that when I solo, I want to feel like I am always playing the game. I don't want to stop playing DCC (in this case) or FATE while I use the solo rules and then get back into the game's headspace after asking my question and constantly flipping back and forth. What I want is something that feels like it could sit in the core rules right after character creation but before all the GM stuff. So at this point, each book is trying to achieve the same thing, but with different dice mechanics or creative prompts to fit the setting or genre.

The second thread is that I am constantly learning and evolving how I play. You could play DCC using my OSR Solo rules, but the DCC rules are a year or newer, and I learned a lot in that time. You could also use Old School Solo, which is my most recent of the fantasy OSR genre games. If you own all three, you would see a natural evolution that has taken place in the past four or so years....See more

Thanks I have a much better idea of what you're doing in your books in relation to gameplay.

Sorry, one last question. Would Scion be compatible with Changeling?

I believe so, but what I do for all my titles is put the entire thing in the full-size preview. If you download that and try it, if it doesn't work, then you have lost nothing.

Do I need another book for the core rules? or I can start playing only with this book?

This is purely an add-on supplement. You will need the core rules, or at the very least the Quickstart rules.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
