Dark Age: Otherworld - A Fantasy Expansion

ADD TO WISHLIST >

The ancient Magic-User Merlin was the last connection between the Ancients and the Dark Age. His devotion to humanity allowed the Universe to grant Gaia one last link to Universal Energy. In the year 1100, this link made itself known.

Following the theme of alternate history within the Dark Age setting, Dark Age: Otherworld allows for elements of Fantasy such as Magic and new Species to be introduced to the story.

Included within this Expansion are Magical Abilities, the new Skills of Alchemy, Talismans and Hexes, and  directions for creating new Species for your games.

Introduction

The wizard Merlin was a throwback to a bygone age. His experimental Magic enabled him to help people and influence events throughout generations. As it became clear Merlin was willing to forego his life force, in service of the protection of Magic and the people of Gaia, the Universe left one final reward for his efforts. The rift portal to the Otherworld in Argyll, Western Scotland, was constructed by visitors to Gaia for one specific purpose; that if humanity ever faced extinction at the hands of malevolent forces, they would have a source of Universal Energy to draw upon in order to defend themselves.

By the year 1066 the known World had been destabilised by a near-perpetual cycle of war, religious division, and persecution. Those who sought to engage with Universal Energy were labelled as witches by Gaia’s monotheistic overlords. Still, one Order of humans comprised of scholars from the four corners of the known world united in search of Merlin’s lost secrets. The Circulus De Spretae (Circle of The Scorned) arrived at Argyll in the year 1100. All of the legends and all of their studies could not prepare them for the discovery of Merlin’s Portal. As they peered closer into the forgotten monolith, they found it was not a two-way gate, but an entry point for the denizens of the Otherworld to enter the Gaian Corporeal Realm. It was here that the Circulus first met with their long-term allies the Keepers. The Keepers then introduced the Circulus to representatives of some of the Species who now made Gaia their home. With the arrival of these new Species to Gaia, Magic also returned to the land. It wouldn’t be long before the mainstream beliefs and views of what had been taught as legend would collide with this new reality. Some did not fear the arrival, knowing that Gaia was undergoing a period of renewal. This is their story.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
