100 Post-Apocalyptic Rumours to Hear

ADD TO WISHLIST >

This is a collection of rumours that could be heard by characters in a post-apocalyptic setting. They could be used as background colour, misdirection or potential adventure hooks. The setting is assumed to be one some time after a final war, or series of wars, that destroyed civilisation, during which every type of weapon was used or created, including modified creatures, orbital weapon platforms, and nanotechnology, as well as more normal ones, rather than one following a natural catastrophe or zombie apocalypse.

This PDF supports Adobe layers and the page backgrounds and images can be disabled to make printing easier.

Here are some sample results:

  • In an impact crater in the wastelands there's said to be a crashed missile from the war, still mostly intact as it never detonated for some reason. The missile was said to have been one of those controlled by an intelligent computer, and the warhead and the computer itself may still be salvageable.
  • In the badlands are what look to be curiously regular hills, but though they are mounds of dirt, they are not hills. The hills are termite mounds, home to termites that have grown vast in size and act far more intelligently than the normal insects do, making them very dangerous to encounter as they are capable of setting up ambushes against those who travel nearby.
  • In the depths of the wastelands there's said to be a permanent plume of black smoke coming from a deep fissure in the ground, a plume that is easy to see as it feeds into a black cloud that never moves from the spot. The smoke has been there as long as anyone can remember, suggesting that something deep in the fissure was ignited years ago and is still burning.
  • In the desert, a tall tower of metal reaches high above the surrounding slagged sands. At the top of the tower is a rotating globe, which is continually turning. When the tower is approached too closely, the globe stops rotating and those nearby start to feel uncomfortable. Nobody has died there, yet, but no-one is willing to wait around or approach even closer to see what happens.
  • In the rocky badlands can be seen sets of regularly-spaced holes that drive deep into the ground. The holes are quite narrow and following them is like following the track of a creature. Some think the holes are made by some sort of organism that is drilling into the ground to extract nourishment.

One page is the front cover and one the front matter.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
