Roaring 20's Speakeasy Generator

Speakeasy is a term for an illegal bar or restaurant that sold alcohol between 1920 and 1933 (the time of prohibition). The speakeasy helped to change the United States by ushering in the notion of dating, mixing the races and sexes over drinks, and a new sense of lawlessness into the country. Many cities had thousands of speakeasies during prohibition, and each could become a place of intrigue, conflict, romance, and adventure.

This product is a collection of nine tables for generating various key attributes that make up a speakeasy. Using these tables will let you generate the essential core of a speakeasy (it’s location, size, security features, theme, etc.) that you can place anywhere in your game. This roleplaying tool can be reused over and over (billions of times actually) without getting the same results and without a heavy investment of your time or energy.

This product works smoothly with many other D10 Dimensions products: 100 Speakeasies of the Roaring 20’s (this product will allow you to easily flesh out any of the 100 Speakeasies listed there), 100 Speakeasy Encounters, 100 Speakeasy Cocktails, and 100 Things overheard in a 1920’s Speakeasy. The upcoming sister product you can expect in the near future is the Roaring 20’s Speakeasy Staff Generator (this generator helps to fill any speakeasy with a set of interesting staff). We will also make sure that these generators don’t overlap one another for maximum utility.

Example (Generated from random rolls from this product in paragraph form):

This speakeasy is disguised as a dance hall (the sprawling area is made of 8 rooms in total). The place is fairly secure with a hidden sentry box by the main entrance, a hidden buzzer behind the bar if there's a ruckus, and the booze is hidden within hollow panels in the walls. The speakeasy has a musical theme to it, and provides auditory entertainment from a raised stage, while a couple rooms are set aside for serious card games, and a newly added roulette table. The speakeasy is adorned with a dozen paintings (these were made with the speakeasy in mind, are for sale by the artist). One of regulars is the artist, and he's the brother of a lawyer who also enjoys this spot. This speakeasy has some strong criminal ties (the owner is a freelance gangster) and he maintains a consistently smuggled supply of dark rum from Jamaica. The owner can be found at work here, or hanging out with the artist and the lawyer if it's a peaceful night, discussing their different worlds over rum.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
