Magonomia™ is the tabletop roleplaying game of Renaissance wizardry. The player characters are wizards whose magic is based on authentic sixteenth century folklore. Together, they explore mysteries in a world steeped in invisible spirits, enigmatic faeries, and secret societies.

Magic is the secret that cannot be told.

The Mysteries of Magic

Your wizard will wield one of the noble Sciences of magic: alchemy, astrology, theurgy, sorcery, or witchcraft. Their spells enable wondrous feats such as invisibility, flight, even forecasting the future. Innovative divination rules mean magic can always advance the story, but never spoils the mystery.

An Age of Wonder and Adventure

Magonomia is set in a fantasy version of sixteenth-century England that has the fantastic elements of Renaissance tales. You might meet the elemental spirits of Shakespeare's The Tempest, the faeries of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the witches of MacBeth. Werewolves prowl the Yorkshire moors. Ghosts haunt the alleys of London. A host of invisible spirits swarm through the world and can be commanded by those who know their secret names. Enchanted England is a place of wonder and peril, a world ripe for adventure!

About the Core Rules

This hefty 379-page tome is the Magonomia core rulebook. It includes:

  • All the rules you need to play. Fate Core System rulebook is not required.
  • 190 spells across five magical Sciences.
  • Over 60 pages of lore and detail about the Enchanted England setting.
  • A Bestiary of 16th-century spirits and creatures.
  • A GM's Sourcebook chapter full of plot inspiration, NPCs, and unique creatures.
Praise for Magonomia
"No one is ever going to do a better researched, more textured, or more interesting game about Elizabethan wizards. And Elizabethan wizards are great!" - Richard Marpole, fantasy-faction.com

"Add wizards to the politics and magic to the exploration and discovery and you simply have a recipe for wonder." - John Sharp, More Than Just Gaming

"if you love playing wizards that are not grossly worldshaking and all-powerful, or ... limited by spell slots, you should definitely give this game a look." - Death By Mage

I think this is terrific. I'd love to use it as the basis for a modern urban fantasy if I could come up w/ the other paths (Chaos Magic, etc.)

Thanks for your kind words! Have fun with your modern urban fantasy conversion. All the spells in Magonomia are Open Game Content so you can post your mod online (or even sell it) if you want.

Unfortunately, the Full-Size Preview seems to be a dead link. Looks like an interesting product, and I've enjoyed previous works.

RPG Imaginings have given Magonomia Core Rules a very warm overview in this 34-minute deep dive!

Do the print versions have the fake paper texturing that appears in the previews?

Yes. I prefer to call it "simulated parchment" :-) We've received mixed feedback on it, but there are no plans to change.

Let me know if you remove it. Normally I would buy hardcover but not like this.

For myself, I found it very legible. YMMV

Legibility isn't the only issue. I'm not spending $60 on something this tacky.

I'm curious what the "five magical sciences" are, or categories for magic, in how you break down the 190 spells?

Hi Dave, thanks for your question. Since all the PCs are wizards, Sciences are styles of magic that differentiate one character from another. For example, astrology is one science and sorcery (conjuration) is another. The chapter on magical Sciences is included in the preview; it starts on page 37. You can see the spell lists for each Science if you like.

This game *sounds* cool, but the previews either don't show much or are borked. The quick preview is blank for me, and the full-sized preview just shows a blank grimoire spell page, as far as I can see...

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
