A Fantasy Guide to Classical Greece

ADD TO WISHLIST >
Suggested Price $12.42

When most people think about creating a Greek inspired world, they might think of togas and maybe throwing a Pegasus or two into the world and decide to exclude the majority of the Monster Manual. But what does this mean for a game around a table? Can you throw mindflayers into a Greek inspired world and still have it feel like Classical Greece? In my own opinion, absolutely you can, and this guide should really help make fantasy Greece, feel like Greece.

This supplement should help creators to base their worlds on historical Greece, creating an ‘authentic’ feeling world that feels alive and truly, Greek. I will be using historical writings and sources to give a simple guide into making a fantasy world feel more historical, without sacrificng any fantasy elements that truly make your worlds magical.

If you've grown tired of the same high medieval worlds and want something different, or if you've simply ever wanted to create a world, run a one shot or a longer lasting campaign set in the Odysey of Classical Greece. Then this supplement should be the perfect starting point.

Great information on Greek Society, lovingly presented and illustrated in an art style that calls back to figures on Grecian urns. As illustrator and author Mr. Hall is a double threat! This is 5E-ready content and thoughtful advice on how to adapt and reskin different parts of the medieval focused corpus of D&D. Also reading it is fun!

A bit of a Warning: The GM advice on how to handle historical slavery, sexism, bisexuality and child marriage is well meaning, -- and better than nothing -- but it is pretty clumsy and is not by itself going to set you up for success. The author himself may have sensed his limits as he put a Disclaimer in the introduction warning away those "easily offended" by the "potentially challenging material". I wouldn't warn you away -- this product is good -- but you will need to understand this product is not a wise guide to appropriately handing these themes. For instance the built in setting has the hostile "Persian empire" equivalent...See more

Hey there, author here.
First off, thank you so much for taking the time to read my work and leave a discussion here, it is hugely appreciated.
You do make some good points and you are correct, I did not (and do not feel equipped) as to how slavery and bisexuality should be dealt with at the modern table. As a historian I can only write what I know, which is the historical views that I am describing. However I do think you make a good point in my warning coming off as defensive rather then nuanced. This is something I will improve in my future works.
I will however defend my work on my ‘Persian Equivalent’ Empire. I described them as dark skinned as I was worried about white washing Greek/Persian history with the more stereotypical view of elves. Similarly the Persians did come across as strange and mystical to the Greeks, which was most of the sources I was working with (which would be very different if I was doing a guide on Achaemenid Persia). I was also careful about portraying the Persians...See more

This is a great resource. There is a lot of interesting info to gleam from, and the illustrations are informative and stylish. The provided setting is surprisingly fleshed-out as well.

I don't want to scold you or start an argument, but it looks like the creator put a huge amount of time, talent and effort into it, so don't you think they deserve to be paid for that? I know I don't go to work for free.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
