By Al Smith

Original art by Kathryn Jenkins and Evlyn Moreau.

If you build it… THEY will come! In this baseball-themed Pulp Cthulhu scenario, investigators play members of the All Nations baseball team, a team comprised of players that have been shut out of the major leagues. Now, they’re barnstorming across the country, playing games in whatever small town will have them.

Now the owner has scheduled a game on a piece of land near a town that loves baseball. The only problem is that nobody in town wants to attend the game, because they all think that field is haunted by ghosts! The investigators are going to have to figure out what is going on with that field, and possibly, confront these evil spirits that threaten to ruin the baseball game! Little do the investigators know that these apparitions are not, in fact, ghosts, but actually something much worse. In fact, the problem may go much DEEPER than the investigators could ever expect…

Field of Screams is an introductory scenario for Keepers and investigators interested in Pulp Cthulhu that contains a straightforward investigation and easy to run action set-pieces.

This product contains 31 pages in total, including 2 full size pages of original art by Kathryn Jenkins, 6 original investigator portraits by Evlyn Moreau, 6 pre-generated investigators, and extensive Keeper support and worksheets to help even the least mechanically inclined Keeper run high octane Pulp combat and chases.

Got to play this at Chaosium Con with the author and it was a wild ride from start to finish. It takes the great things that Pulp Cthulhu does and really lets 'em rip. The PCs are a lot of fun to play around with, and the scenario sets out a fantastic investigation turned adventure that would make Indiana Jones blush. Special highlights include a delightful small town, a realistic hook, and a cast of characters that drive the adventure forward with gusto.

Al was not only a fantastic Keeper, but showed some resources available to those who run this to make a notoriously maligned mechanic work smooth as silk. Can't wait to run this for some of my other players.

Given the DriveThruRPG system, I can't leave a review; so instead, I will strongly recommend Field of Screams over here under the discussion tab! Our group of six had a lot of fun playing through this scenario. It is versatile enough to play it with emphasis either on investigation, horror, or you can jump into the pulp action quickly. We played it in 4.5 hours and had a fun-filled, lovely finale resulting in the deaths of all the heroes. Rest in Peace team!

Will, I have never had an issue with being able to finish this scenario in under 4 hours and I have run it at conventions several times, both in-person and online. There are several "tools" and "bangs" that I have placed into the game's fiction to help get the players moving and the the game continuing on if they start meandering. That said, every Keeper and group is different, and I do know of groups who have taken 2 four hour sessions to finish the game. I hope that helps!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
