Aquilae: Western Realm Atlas

ADD TO WISHLIST >
Selected Option:

The largest, most comprehensive, most detailed fantasy atlas ever created.

If you're aware of a fantasy atlas that's larger, more detailed, or more comprehensive, please let me know and I'll send you a freebie by way of gratitude.

No, I'm not joking.  If something like this existed, I would have bought it already.  So if there is something out there that's, well, more this, I want to add it to my collection.

Check out the full, 840-page Western Realm Gazetteer which includes descriptions, rules, and much much more on each of the 21 nations in the Western Realm of Aquilae.

Or, check out the FREE 88-page Arvadarre Gazetteer, which covers one of the 21 nations in depth.

What Is This?

This Atlas describes the Western Realm of Aquilae, a fantasy realm that serves as host to all of Infinium Game Studio's adventures and books.

64,000 square miles of intricately-detailed terrain, cities, ruins, and points of interest.

Run a campaign in Aquliae, use this Atlas as a supplement to other IGS adventures.

Or, use this Atlas to augment or inspire your own campaign setting.  The maps and points of interest have been designed to be immediately usable in any fantasy campaign setting.

This Atlas, and the companion books that will further enhance it, represent decades of play and percolation, thousands of hours of drawing and design... and, we feel, the very best of what the Infinium Game Studio approach to indie fantasy RPG content is capable of creating.

Instantly Usable

If you're already familiar with the mapping approach Infinium Game Studio takes, the following will come as no surprise.  We're players and G/DMs ourselves, across decades and dozens of game systems; we recognize that a map can be gorgeous, but is often only as useful as it is helpful during gameplay.

To that end, this Atlas contains variations on most content designed to make it easy to run a game, and to show to players when needed.

Specifically:

  • Nearly every map is presented in both a GM and a Player-redacted version.
  • Most are also presented with optional grid markers to make navigation a snap.
  • Each regional and mapcell map is presented with a continental framing overlay which quickly places the map visually amongst the continent itself so it's easy to tell where you are.

Ultra Detail, Ultra Inspiration

The Western Realm Atlas is the result of decades of homebrew planning, adventuring, and personal inspiration.

In thorough development for over three years, this map contains nearly 3,000 points of interest.

Repeating Points of Interest:

  • Over 1,400 map locations, comprised of 66 different types of distinct phenomena, structures, or major effects.
  • Caves, Shrines, Vaults, Templtes, Caches, Ancient Halls, Cursed Ships, Training Centers, Cathedrals, Garrisons, Gravethorpes, Prisons, Spires, and more!
  • Each type of repeating POI is designed to be an adventure opportunity unto itself, and the rich disposition of them ensure that no matter where you are on the enormous continental map, there's always plenty to do and pursue!

Unique Points of Interest:

  • 384 individual locations of significance.
  • Each one has been designed to be a potential adventure unto itself, with multiple sessions worth of adventure opportunity.
  • Sprinkled liberally throughout the continent to ensure that every place in the Realm is a place of interest and adventure.

Settlements:

  • 1,561 cities, strongholds, castles, and ruins
  • Each settlement has a name created using real-world phonetic roots based on the etymological mapping of the nation that settlement is in (for example, the nation of Arvadarre has settlements whose names recall real-world French phonemes and composition)
  • Thousands more villages and hamlets

What's Included

  • 388-page Atlas PDF, laid out in painstaking detail to descrbie a Eurasian-sized continent of fantasy roleplaying opportunity
  • Over 500 ultra-high-resolution, 300dpi maps
  • 150 Heatmaps depicting thousands of cities, settlements, and other key Points of Interest acrosss the continent.  The approach used to generate these heatmaps was featured in Jan 2022 in an article on ProFantasy's mapping blog
  • Over 275 Mapcell maps, each describing a 330-mile square piece of the continent (each roughly the width of the US state of Pennsylvania).
  • Over 80 Regional and Continental maps, describing each of 21 nations and the continent as a whole
  • Over 600 map "quads" for each region, continent, and individual mapcell, describing Altitude, Climate, Rainfall, and Temperature

What's Not Included (But Coming Soon!)

This Atlas is designed to be immediately and immensely useful to any D/GM looking for inspiration or instantly-usable overland maps of a fantasy continent rich in detail and adventurous opportunity.

However, it's worth underscoring that this Atlas is just that: an Atlas.  It's a book of pictures.  It's a book of insanely detailed pictures, plus several hundred crazily-detailed image files comprising over 5 GB of content, but at the end of the day, this product is images, and images only.

The upcoming Western Realm Gazetteer and other companion books will add even more to the utility of this Atlas, and will contain such content as:

  • Nation Content: The rich lore and history and background of each of 21 nations
  • Descriptions of each and every map cell
  • Point of Interest detail: Detailed descriptions, heatmaps, quest seeds, and more for each and every repeating and unique POI
  • Rumors and lore for each major region and the continent as a whole
  • Adventures: Dynamic adventure seeds, quests, outlines, and plots to make conducting spur-of-the-moment one-shots, detailed multi-session delves, or entire campaigns as easy as rolling dice with zero preparation
  • Settlement Detail: Listing, profiles/stats, population composition, and zoomed-in regional images for each of over 1,500 cities, strongholds, castles, and ruins
  • Solo Adventuring detail for those wishing to explore Aquilae on their own
  • Exploration Kit making it easy and possible to create your own version of Aquilae, populating it dynamically with adventure content and POI either playing solo or with a traditional group
  • Thousands more maps
  • Much more!

Are there unlabeled versions of the maps so we can use our own names for locations?

If I already own the Aquilae Cartographer product (the Lifetime one), is there additional content in this, or does the AC contain this product plus the other content?

Good question. Cartographer includes a TON more maps than this Atlas does. I don't think there are any standalone map image files that the Atlas has, that Aquilae Cartographer does not. The Atlas does include the 388-page PDF book that displays them all really prettily, of course. :)

Good question! The Atlas is a premium landscape-color hardback that lavishly depicts the Western Realm of Aquilae with hundreds of ultra-detailed maps. There's no real adventure content in the Atlas; it's just, well, an Atlas. Great as a reference or on the coffee table, or to use as inspiration for your adventures in Aquilae or wherever else you prefer, but you'll find no statblocks, history, description, or other things. Check out the Table of Contents in the preview for more info.

The Atlas also contains an unpredecented heap of ultra-high-quality standalone image files for each map, if you plan on using a VTT app for your Aquilae adventures.

Contrast with the Western Realm Gazetteer: an 840-page behemoth describing each and every map region of the Western Realm in exquisite detail. History, leadership, politics, points of interest, and tables for generating a wealth of additional content on the fly--it's a massive and essential resource for anyone wishing to set an adventure...See more

Hi all--Updated PDFs are now available. The update is purely cosmetic; it updates the header fonts to match those used in the Western Realm Gazetteer. They're more deliciously old-school-y. Onward!

This is a marvelous product, but I could really use a legend or key to tell me what the colors and some of the strange shapes mean. A lot of it is intuitive, but I do keep coming across bits that I don't understand. Is it possible to get a map legend?

It's Campaign Cartographer 3+, by ProFantasy. A nearly-vertical learning curve, but there's plenty of YouTube tutorials, and you get out of the tool what you invest into it by way of picking things up and trial and error.

I'm an enormous fan of their software and can't say enough good things about it. I have zero natural artistic ability, but using their tools makes me feel like an artist.

Fun fact: I wrote a how-to blog article for ProFantasy describing the "heatmaps" mapping approach I used for this Atlas.

And thanks for the kind words! (A rating or review would help, too. :)

Check Humble Bundle, CC3+ was on there last year for a steal. I reiterate J's statement that the "learning wall" is tough. There are a lot of additional modules & annuals to increase your cartography including 2 by Mike Schley of D&D fame.

Hi Jason,

Did you use the Tome of Ultimate Mapping, or just YT & other tutorials?

Thx,

ToUM is *not* optional, in my view. :) The YouTube tutorials that are available online are essential viewing as well.

Other than that, it really just comes down to practice, practice, practice. And time. And patience.

I've been using CC3+ for seven years for battlemaps, but the overland stuff took a little bit of tweaking to feel comfortable.

I made this mainly as a self-reference, but for those completely new to overland in CC3+, it might be useful:

Please note, as of 6:30pm EST on 23-Jan-2022, I've removed the nearly-a-gigabyte master PDF from the listing.

The smaller, "mobile friendly" version is still available for download, as are all of the ZIP files containing the image files.

I am working with OBS/DTRPG technical support to optimize and streamline the master Atlas PDF so that customers can actually download it.

My apologies for the frustration; I know there's a lot of you who have logged tickets with DTRPG advising that you're unable to download this massive file. Stay tuned and rest assured that I will have this resolved ASAP.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
