Has your normal GM suddenly cancelled out for the night's game? Are you a GM that has a few of your players missing for the night and want to do a side trek for this weeks game? Perhaps you were extra busy this week and didn't get much prep time and need an quick idea for tonight's game? How about an introductory adventure to get the campaign going?

How many of you GM's out there have asked "Another town, how can I make this one exciting?" or "I need something to bring all the PC's together, to start my new campaign"

DwD's "Of Towns and Heroes" is your answer!

You can roll a d100 or simply choose something you like. There are 10 detailed maps to go along these adventure hooks that you can plop anywhere in your campaign world.

Here is just a partial example to give you an idea of the goodies in this book. "As the heroes walk through town, a silhouette blots out the sun. Everyone looks up to see a wyvern carrying a maiden in its claws fly by, heading towards a nearby mountain. A large key drops from the maiden and lands imbedded in the cobblestones by a hero. Dare they head into the mountains to face a wyvern and its foul master to save the maiden?......."

Of Towns and Heroes
by Megan R. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 03/18/2014 07:28:44

Are you running out of ideas for how to make the townships the party visits in the course of their adventures interesting?

This may provide the answer, being an hundred little ideas for events and side-adventures that can happen within whatever settlement the characters are in at the time. Each situation is applicable to any fantasy game, not just BareBones Fantasy - the upside of this is you can make use of this supplement whatever game you run, the downside is that you will have to develop any necessary NPC/monster stats or other game mechanics required (indeed, you will even if you are playing BareBones Fantasy....).

Some of the adventures suggested will occupy mere moments, others have the potential to develop into full-blown adventures in their own right, if not into whole campaigns... or at least, events whose ramifications haunt the party for years to come, at least whenever they visit that particular settlement again.

Interspersed with the adventure ideas are some charming 'hand-drawn' sketches of town layouts. You could make use of these for the various settlements visited, if you like.

Overall, if urban adventuring is not the main thrust of your game, this could prove very useful in ensuring that visits to towns are never boring. On the other hand, if you want to develop city-based adventuring more, this should kick-start your ideas and help you develop this aspect of your plotting.

Operation: Burning Presidents
by Megan R. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 03/10/2014 10:23:46

This is a classic adventure for federal agents operating within the continental US: a missing agent, a drug facilitiy and a bunch of militia who have uses other than fertilising their land for ammonium nitrate. Yet it is filled with twists, little nuggets and extra options that take it out of a one-liner in your plot notebook to be a full-blown scenario in its own right.

There are nice clear maps of important locations, with GM and player versions; stat blocks for everyone they will encounter, and assorted suggestions and different options to enable you to cope with whatever the party decides to do.

It is straightforward enough to play in a single session with minimal GM preparation required - just reading it through would suffice - and yet ends up with, should the characters be successful, with that warm feeling that results from having saved the world, again.

Neat, complete, just the thing to keep to hand for when you need a game and don't have time to prepare it, or use as a side-adventure within a more plot-driven campaign.

Oath of the Dead (fiction)
by matthew j. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 03/04/2014 20:29:46

This is a quick little story that drops us right into the action. Author Eric Johnson does a great job giving us just enough information to grab hold of our interest without bogging us down in needless details. The story is fast paced, includes a bit of mystery and tension and gives us a few details of the Keranak Kingdoms without becoming a lexicon. Of the few characters that are introduced, the old knight is excellently written and I finished the story wanting to know more about the character. The main female lead is interesting as well, but in something this short there is just not enough room to give us much more.

Overall, I enjoyed this story and wish there was more. For the price ($1.99), this is a great diversion for someone that likes fantasy and enjoys reading. Eric is clear, well written and easy to digest.

I would recommend this story and look forward to reading more.

Trouble Brewing really shines as a fun, interesting beginners module for the Barebones Fantasy game. It is fairly simple and straight forward, but my players enjoyed themselves a lot. I am looking forward to the follow up adventure, the whole goblins and snails theme just hits a home run for me.

BareBones Fantasy Role Playing Game
by Eric P. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 01/25/2014 08:35:04

What can I say that hasn't already been said? It really accomplishes a lot of things at once. It is a great entry point for new gamers, including preteens, and is a blast for old school gamers as well. It recreates the Red Box feel and simplicity while adding more character customization without making it more difficult.

Character creation is easy for even new players, and the game mechanics are fast and efficient without being too simplistic. It is advertised as a rules light game, but it tends to get very close to the rules medium arena, which is just right for me. I have my teen kids playing this now, and they love it. It's also easy to houserule and create your own game out of it. The whole BBF line is so good, I bought it all! Including the new Covert Ops game line.

BareBones Fantasy Role Playing Game
by Michael H. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 01/20/2014 18:47:50

I'm ashamed it took me so long to get back to RPGNow to review this one.

This is the best rules lite fantasy game I've ever had the pleasure of playing. The rules are damned easy to grok and their use in play is intuitive and fast. There's an included setting but honestly you could use this game to run just about any fantasy setting you can imagine.

Very highly recommended!

Covert Ops Role Playing Game
by Michael H. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 01/20/2014 18:22:31

More excellent gaming goodness courtesy of DWD Studios!

This particular version is highly recommended as you get the Core Rules, the GM's Operation Manual and The Usual Suspects all in one handsomely presented hard bound book. That said, you really can't go wrong with any of the options.

There's a ton of material here and everything is open enough that you can run all types of spy/thriller/espionage games without ever needing another book.

These guys continue to deliver a heck of a gaming punch by releasing games that are easy on the budget while providing an unbelievable amount of very high quality content.

If you haven't already, be sure to check out BareBones Fantasy too. It's an excellent fantasy game.

Covert Ops Role Playing Game
by Jay S. A. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 01/08/2014 02:07:11

Once again DwD Studios manages to wow me with the simplicity and elegance of a game. Using the same system from Barebones Fantasy, Covert Ops takes on the espionage genre and delivers maximum fun for minimum complexity.

Covert Ops is an excellent beginner game in the sense that the mechanics are easy enough to understand and teach so that even a new player with no experience with rpgs, but a good handle on the espionage genre can get in on the fun with a minimum of fuss.

One other thing to note is that the Covert Ops product has a whole bunch of pdfs, including a Core Rulebook and a GM Operations Manual and The Usual Suspects, a book on NPCs.

Core Rulebook

Character creation is easy to follow, but surprisingly robust, with a large list of possible backgrounds to support all sorts of characters. Skills function similarly to Barebones Fantasy, where each “skill” functions as a skill group and are used in any situation where that concept is applicable. The Medic skill for example could be used for anything from applying emergency first aid, to studying the nature of a dangrous engineered virus that the bad guys plan to unleash onto the population.

As with all Espionage games, Covert Ops features a neat equipment section that covers everything from equipment packs to cover identities. A neat little trick is that players are also allowed to invent gadgets with GM permission. No complicated accounting here, gadgets are merely costed according to plausibility with modern technlology. Guns and vehicles are also listed here, with respective examples.

Martial Arts is also represented well by Covert Ops, with a large selection of special maneuvers that players can roll for or select from.

Base creation is also covered with a simple point-buy system that is made available to player characters who have reached rank 4. It’s a neat little subsystem that works well for the genre and gives the players an extra sense of ownership over the setting.

The GM guidelines section is very comprehensive, which is a godsend for any espionage GM. There’s plenty of tables to roll for making a mission, getting henchmen and other useful little details especially in a genre where GMs really have to think on their feet.

The last part of the book details SECTOR, a mysterious international paramilitary and counter-espionage organization as a default organization for players to operate in. It’s a neat little hook to have a group of well armed operatives from any nationality able to team up and deal with the evils of the modern world.

GM Operations Manual

This book is an addition 112 pages of alternative rules and guidelines expressly aimed at helping GMs with run Covert Ops. I won’t go into exhaustive detail, but I will say that this is one of the handiest GM handbooks I’ve read in a while.

Each of the options opens up the game to different variants and offers neat ways to customize and tailor fit the game to different gaming groups. The language is accessible and when used properly as options, can go a long way to enhancing the already fun and experience of a Covert Ops game with a cost of a minimal increase in complexity.

The Usual Suspects

The last book in the set is a collection of starting character archetypes and experienced agents for use in a game. The starting archetypes are all rather neat and cover a wide range of character concepts so I’m sure it will be easy for anyone to just grab one and go. The Experienced agents will be handy for a GM to use if they need to put in an experienced agent to work with the player characters as well

Everything Else

Along with the books, the set also contains a Character Sheet, Outfitting Reference Sheet, Enemy Organization Worksheet, Mission Generation Worksheet, an optional Hit Location damage tracking sheet and Development Point checklist for making DP awards easy.

Conclusion

DwD Studios knocks this one right out of the park. Covert Ops delivers an incredible amount of value for its cost and hits all the things I look for in a game: good rules, good art, good layout and options to make the game your own. GMs are supported beyond just a simple chapter at the end, and the game can do anything from Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell to G.I. Joe.

Few games can deliver this kind of value for money and yet DwD Studios does it effortlessly. Great job, guys, this one is a definite must buy for me.

BareBones Fantasy Role Playing Game
by Ian S. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 01/06/2014 01:21:09

For anyone interested in an original and extremely well made fantasy RPG, grab this. Many people call it a light game, but in reality it is actually a medium complexity game that is written so intuitively that it feels rules-light. It is almost as complex as Savage Worlds, but it is more compact and excellently organized.

The system itself is a straightforward, but unique, roll under d% game. The unique part is that classes (warrior, cleric, spellcaster, etc.) are skills. In order to be better at fighting, you raise your warrior skill. In order to learn more spells, raise your spellcaster skill. It is quite ingenious and a hell of a lot of fun.

The magic system is also unique. There are only a handful of spells, 17 I believe. However, each spell is flexible in effect based on the caster's desires. Spells also increase in power and effectiveness as the caster gains levels in his spellcaster (or cleric) skill. Another unique touch is the enchanter class/skill that allows you to make potions, magic items, and use rune magic.

The races are the standard Tolkien inspired Human, High Elf, Halfling, and Dwarf. Their statistical adjustments have a moderate impact on the character and an important choice during character creation. There is another book for this game, called Flesh and Blood I believe, that has many more races if you need more.

To top it off, the book contains a random idea/adventure generator and the skeleton of a setting for GM's to use as the frame work for a campaign. There is a separate setting book that expands it a bit further if you find it to your liking. The monster section is fairly small, but it covers all the basics and gives some templates to help create some critters if you need more. Monster stat blocks are not complicated.

All in all, it is an excellent book for a decent price. It has just pushed out Savage Worlds for my favorite in the fantasy genre. I must note, that due to how print-on-demand books are produced I would recommend the softcover rather than the hardcover version.
