Dark Trails RPG - Bootleg Edition

Weird Wild West + Horror + DCC rules set = Awesome in a lot of ways

I supported the Dark Trails kickstarter a while ago and as part of it the Dark Trails Bootleg edition has been released. I love it. I have played Dark Trails before and I even ran a funnel adventure for it at Gary Con in 2019. Ever since I tried Dark Trails I enjoyed it. Its different than your standard DCC in that it is a Weird West setting. It has horror elements to it. I was hooked on reading this book since I got it because I wanted to see what Mr. David Baity has been doing with the system since I last checked it out. He has been working hard on it. In this book, you will find everything you need to start a Dark Trails game (except for players, and some dice, and playing card decks). The system has eleven new classes. Each have a great feel to them and I like a lot of them. Mr. Baity gives us a taste of what the game will be like by presenting two levels of each class. So you can start your Dark Trails campaign with the funnel adventure in the book (Great idea by the way) and then can advance the character you have survived to level one characters. There is a whole new mecurial magic chart relatable to Dark Trails. We are presented with rules for firearms which play a huge role for most characters. Dark Trails presents a new system for alignment and I enjoy it. Intoxication (chasing the worm) rules are really a great idea for a game like this. Fear and Madness rules are discussed and its a dangerous times out there so this makes sense. There is a system that is in addition to the normal luck rules called Boons and Hexes. This is interesting and I like it. It fits well with Dark Trails.

Overall, I told Mr. Baity, this Bootleg Edition made me want to run a Dark Trails game even though the full game is not 100% complete yet. Its great. I hope this review might help you out if you were considering purchasing the book or pdf. Its a great introduction to Dark Trails RPG.

Feats of Legend: 20 Infernal Feats
Publisher: Total Party Kill Games
by Chris Z. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 10/16/2015 13:07:52

20 Infernal feats is a pdf that obviously goes over feats related to all things infernal. The pdf is 5 pages of content, 1 cover, 1 credits, and 1 OGL.

I liked this short pdf. It has feats that are useful if you are fighting infernal outsiders or if you want to utilize the powers of infernals. I liked how it could be useful to good or evil characters. That is a real plus.

If I was ever running a specific kind of campaign that had my players fighting demons and devils a lot, I would want all my players to have a copy of this pdf. I think it could be very useful. In a general campaign, I am not 100% sure it would be that interesting to players or not.

I have a couple things that I am being nitpicky about but this is my opinions about cons of this product.

I enjoyed the art. However, I could see some people being offended by the image Baphomet from Levi's "Dogme et Rituel de la Haute Magie."

The feats Hellfire Acolyte, and Hellfire Master are both cool feats that grant the character fire resistance. Which works fine for say a human or halfling who have no form of Fire resistance. However these feats do not explain what happens to a character that already has a form of Fire resistance like a Ifrit. Do they stack and add together? If a brief comment was added about that, I would feel that each feat is a little more complete and there would be no question.

All in all I liked 20 Infernal feats. It sparks an interest in running a Infernal themed campaign (an evil one, or good one where the characters hunt infernals). I rate 20 Infernal feats 4 out of 5 stars.

SoR1: A Page of Scrolls
Publisher: Casey Brown

A solid first level adventure

I must state that I was allowed a copy of a page of scrolls to read and then make a review.

A page of scrolls is an adventure that intrigued me. When I saw that it was a first level adventure involving goblins, I must say I was not impressed. I have so many first level adventures for Pathfinder so I thought, why do I need another one? I am glad that I had the opportunity to be proven wrong. A page of scrolls is an adventure that where players get their start. It is a pivotal time, because almost anything can hurt or even kill your character. The author Casey Brown does a great job at managing that and making an intriguing fun adventure for players to go through.

I will say that one of my favorite things Casey did in this adventure is include footnotes to certain sections of the Pathfinder Rules that apply to what is happening during the adventure. Brilliant! I don’t understand why this is not done more often. I know it takes up space, but as a GM it is a very useful tool. Casey also puts some great details in this adventure. I loved it.

One other great part of the adventure is that a full write up for the City of Riverton is included. This is where the adventure takes place. My only negative is there was not a map of the City of Riverton included. It is not a necessity to have for the adventure to be ran effectively, but it is nice to have to see the City that the adventure takes place in.

The adventure runs 34 pages, so 17 if you print it out and want to bind it like I did. I did not find any great errors in the pdf so that is always nice.

I found myself enjoying this adventure a lot. I was gladly surprised. I do enjoy low level adventures and this one did not disappoint.

I hope to see further adventures from Casey Brown in the near future. I will gladly review them if offered the opportunity again.

I rate A Page of Scrolls 5 out of 5 stars.

GM's Miscellany: Dungeon Dressing
Publisher: Raging Swan Press

An Amazing Compilation This book by Raging Swan Press, is incredible. It is a compilation of all things related to a Dungeon for Pathfinder RPG. It goes over numerous options available for: altars, archways, bridges, captives, ceilings, and on and on. I was shocked to see how much work actually went into this. It gives options for what you can find in a goblin’s pocket ranging from utterly worthless to yummy nibbles, to a goblin’s shiny treasures. How cool is that? It offers new options for traps, riddles, and treasure hoards.

I am a Game Master that normally runs pre-made adventures. This book increases my interest in writing my own dungeon crawling adventures. If I had this when I purchased my original core rulebook, I would have started my own dungeons that day.

This book is the Ultimate Toolkit to add to any Game Master who enjoys running dungeon crawls or ones that want to add something very interesting or unique to your already pre-made adventure.

This will be the NEXT Pathfinder book that I purchase in the future. It is a book that needs to be on my shelf next to the Core Rulebook, Game Mastery Guide, and the Bestiaries.

If I was able to give this more stars than 5 I would. It is that good.

Strange Magic Subscription [PFRPG]
Publisher: Interjection Games
by Chris Z. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 02/11/2015 09:17:52

Ultimate Ethermagic (I have only read through this entire section of the subscription so far)

I supported the Strange Magic kickstarter a while ago, when I saw that it was going to include Ethermagic. I always enjoy 3rd party content for Pathfinder RPG. This was no different. When I saw the updates about the pdfs being finished for each section and that the supporters can go and download them, I was intrigued. I downloaded just Ultimate Ethermagic just to see what I was getting in this new book when it comes out. I was not disappointed at all. It is 94 pages long! Holy crap! That is 47 double sided printed pages. I am glad that the inside of the document is only black and white, with a color cover, because this would be hard to print out if it was all in color. I understand color is awesome, but I was not disappointed in the black and white art inside.

I read the entire thing, and WOW, this supplement (which is only 1/3 of the entire book) is amazing! I don’t intend on going into as much details at Endzeitgeist did in his review (a very comprehensive review), but I will give you what I thought was really fantastic, and what could have been a little better. Ethermagic is a renewable unlimited source of cosmic power that these three new classes can manipulate for their own benefits.

The 3 classes are:

  1. Ethermagus (an adventurer who uses voidmeld Ethermagic to create melee weapons)

  2. Ethermancer (an adventurer who can utilize Ethermagic in the largest of variety of ways to best assist them. They mostly utilize Ethermagic to support their unique form of spellcasting)

  3. Etherslinger (an adventurer who uses Ethermagic in conjunction with enhanced firearms to become one bad ass ranged weapon specialist)

There are archetypes for the Ethermagus and the Ethermancer, but no archetypes for the Etherslinger. BOO. After reading all the cool archetypes for both of the other classes, I was a little disappointed not even to see one for the etherslinger.

After all 3 classes and archetypes, came a section on feats for all 3 classes. I kept saying to myself, reading the classes, I bet the feats are going to be good, and they are. I liked that all 3 classes got feats that support them.

Next came up manifestations and greater manifestations. Manifestations are things that alter the effect that the class is trying to utilize. Think of the manifestations like the condiments to any sandwich. They just make the sandwich much better. I guess I never got into the mechanics of the classes (again, because Endzeitgeist describes this much better), but each class gets a number of points to support their abilities. These points regenerate each turn. These Ether points also are needed to add on the manifestations. Lastly the Greater manifestations are AMAZING. I would only allow them for the Ethermancer. They are super powerful and I love them. The Ethermancer has to give up an ability that he gets multiple times during the 20th level progression to get one of these. Clockwork Universe is so cool. It is unique, and different and I would love to see it utilized in play. I think it provokes such cool imagery.

I loved Ultimate Ethermagic. Three unique classes, with a variety of ways that they can be played. I do wish the Etherslinger got at least 1 or 2 archetypes, but that is a minor detail. The only other thing that I can criticize is that these classes are complex in the details. I am not sure that a novice player could understand all of the multifaceted things that these classes can do. I kept thinking, as I read these, that if any of my players wanted to try one of the classes, I would suggest to them to have different color notecards that they can write their main abilities on, and plain white ones to write their manifestations on. This would simplify the need to keep going back to reference the pdf and see what the ability does, and trying to minimize slowing down the game.

Side note: I am getting the Giant slayer adventure path and I was wondering how a party of adventurers using Ethermagic and other 3rd party classes would fare Against the Giants?

I rate Ultimate Ethermagic 5 out of 5 stars.

Endzeitgeist is working on a mad bomber archetype, actually. His group pretty much pushed him into it. Spell cards are an excellent idea! I\'ll look into it, though expect a deck for Clockwork Universe all on its own.

Fat Goblin Travel Guide To Horrible Horrors & Macabre Monsters
Publisher: Fat Goblin Games
by Chris Z. [Verified Purchaser]

To be open and honest, I was allowed a copy of “Fat Goblin Travel Guide to Horrible Horrors & Macabre Monsters” to check out and do a review. And thank you to Fat Goblin games for allowing me to do that.

I really enjoyed this book. The first thing that stuck out in my mind is that every monster entry had a full color illustration. This is fantastic. Most of the art is from Rick Hershey and it is very cool. I said to myself, man I want this as a print book.

I must admit I am a print copy guy. I fully understand that pdf is a very affordable and solid option for 3rd party companies, but with this book especially, I thought the art looked so high quality, that I wanted to own a print book of this product.

As far as the monster content goes, it has a large collection of varying creatures. I believe its 47 new monster entries. As I looked through the pdf, I kept thinking to myself, okay I want to use that monster, or oh that would be very cool in a Vathak campaign. For those who do not know, Fat Goblin games also produces a campaign setting called Shadows over Vathak, and with this pdf, I might very well be running my next campaign in the Vathak world. A lot of the entries seemed to fit very well in Vathak. This is not to say that they couldn’t be used in any other campaign world.

I am not a huge fan of monster books, mostly because I usually run pre-made adventures, but with this pdf, I could easily see myself wanting to write up an adventure or two using these monsters. Great Job guys.

CLASSifieds: The Saint
Publisher: Fat Goblin Games
by Chris Z. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 07/07/2013 16:33:05

I need to say that I was skeptical about Fat Goblin Games new pdf called CLASSifieds The Saint. I even made a comment on Fat Goblin Games Facebook page about it. I was hesitant to consider a class called the Saint for Pathfinder when Pathfinder already has divine classes like the Cleric, Inquisitor, and the Paladin. I was allowed to check out The Saint, and I must say I do enjoy this class. I am a fan of most 3rd party classes. I do find most of them original and I allow most in my home campaign. After reading The Saint, I would have no problem allowing this class in my campaign.

This class is 14 pages long, 1 page front cover, 1 page SRD, leaving us with 12 pages of content, so let’s check it out.

The Saint gets 3/4 Base Attack Bonus, Good Reflex & Will saves, d8 Hit Points per level, 4+Int modifier skill ranks per level, and is allowed any alignment but that alignment must match of his patron deity.

The Saint chooses one domain (or subdomain) from his patron deity's list and can use the domain spells as spell like abilities. The Saint can only do this a certain number of times a day and the level of spell costs a certain number of uses. The higher the spell the more uses it takes. Simple enough.

The big power of the Saint is its ability to use powers called Graces that use Favor Points. I found the Favor points is similar to the Grit system of Paizo's Gunslinger, and I like that. It limits the number of cool things a Saint can do, and he can regain Favor points by vanquishing enemies using your deity's favored weapons. Being a divine class, I thought this was okay until I read the next page when it describes other ways to gain favor. This part enriched the Saint class for me and I thought it was exciting because it didn't need to be killing an enemy to gain favor points, it could be something of a role playing experience. Very Cool idea.

It should be noted that Saints gain spells but not as much as a full caster. They can cast up to 6th level spells at level 20. The spell list is all explained and all spells are hyperlinked to www.d20pfsrd.com

I did enjoy the Saint after I was able to read it. Its original, and I do enjoy the class. I would say the only thing that I wished it had was a Herolab file. My players are very into using Herolab, and they do like classes they can just click on and make on their laptops. Its a small thing but its something that would make this class stellar.

I rate Fat Goblin Games CLASSifieds The Saint a solid 4 out of 5 stars.

The Sinister Secrets of Silvermote [Preview]
Publisher: Total Party Kill Games
by Chris Z. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 11/30/2011 08:55:25

So I have been waiting for silvermote, ever since I picked up the infamous adversaries:Temerlyth pdf. This preview was just enough to tide me over until the adventure comes out in early December. The preview is 12 pages in length. It explains the background for the adventure, plot hooks on how you can get your players started, a encounter with the NASTY grey lord. He is brutal, but looks like he would be a challenging encounter, the scales for all the encounters in the adventure. This I loved. It allows any DM tailor this adventure to the level they wish, and lastly the top 10 reasons why someone should buy the adventure. Like I needed more reasons, but they made me laugh.

I might be a little biased, because I enjoy everything TPK games has put out, but I think this adventure will be a great one. And liches are awesome anyways.

Ironborn of Questhaven (PFRPG)

Date Added: 01/14/2011 22:44:29

When I first saw this, I did think that this was going to be a re-hash of the Eberron Warforged but made for Pathfinder. I must say that I was gladly surprised and that I was wrong. I liked the Ironborn pdf. I don't really know much about Questhaven being that this was my first pdf that I bought from Rite Publishing, but I decided to include the Ironborn as a race in future Pathfinder game that I am running. I liked the Constructed sorcerer bloodline, and the different traits that Ironborn get to choose from. I do think the Centurion trait might be a little overpowered (it allows the PC to start with Armor equal to plate mail), but I felt the others were interesting and brought background flavor to the Player Character. I think the Ironborn pdf is affordable and a great product.
